The Doctrine of Temple Work (Mormonism - Open)
Ensign ^ | October 2003 | Elder David E. Sorensen

Posted on 10/26/2010 5:17:20 AM PDT by Colofornian

Snip

...Joseph Smith warned of the consequences when we fail to use the temples available to us: “Those Saints who neglect [temple work] in behalf of their deceased relatives, do it at the peril of their own salvation.”

Snip

A key function of temples is to perform ordinance work for our deceased ancestors. When we think of temple ordinances and the necessity to do them perfectly, without error...

“… For their salvation is necessary and essential to our salvation...they without us cannot be made perfect—neither can we without our dead be made perfect” (D&C 128:5, 15;...).

Consider the...vision of President Joseph F. Smith...:

“Thus was the gospel preached to those who had died in their sins...having rejected the prophets.

Snip

The Lord revealed through... Joseph: “All covenants, contracts, bonds, obligations, oaths, vows, performances, connections, associations, or expectations, that are not made and entered into and sealed by the Holy Spirit of promise, of him who is anointed, both as well for time and for all eternity, … through the medium of mine anointed, whom I have appointed on the earth to hold this power … are of no efficacy, virtue, or force in and after the resurrection from the dead; for all contracts that are not made unto this end have an end when men are dead” (D&C 132:7).

Snip

...One of the great privileges we have is the wearing of the garment...

...The garment, … when properly worn, will serve as a protection against temptation and evil.

“It is expected that members will wear the garment both night and day...Members should not adjust the garment or wear it contrary to instructions in order to accommodate different styles of clothing...The garment should not be removed for activities which might reasonably be done with the garment worn beneath the clothing...

What if I just bought garments and started wearing them? And I was sincere but not LDS? Would that please God?

It’s a free country (sort of) and you are welcome to believe anything you like and worship any way you choose. Just stop calling it Christianity please. It’s a lie and an insult. Just go be Mormons and everyone will leave you in peace.

My understanding of testimony meetings is that the same sort of memorized lines are repeated, something like the things we hear over and over again from some of the regulat LDS posters here, along the lines of "I love my church, Jesus is my best friend, I know JS is a true prophet, etc"

That really baffles me. If you ask a Christian their testimony, you will get different, wonderful, heartfelt story from every one about how lost and broken they were until they became born again and accepted Jesus as their Savior and gave up trying to save themselves.

One thing I’ve learned - once you press that send button, there is no power on earth that can stop it, even if you have a very, very slow connection. You can panic and stab the back button repeatedly, you can log off, you can yank the power cord out of the wall, but send it will, one little green flashing bar at a time.

Too bad I have heard Christians say that all the Jews are going to hell

THat's a pretty outrageous bit of hearsay Sandy. Care to back it up?

It's an assumption on the part of mormons to believe that. JS never recorded that he was speaking to God or that Jesus was speaking to him.

The use of the word "Personages" is in no way an adequate description of God and Jesus, I don't care how you try to spin that.

• 1 John:

4:1 Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world.

2 By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God,

3 and every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you heard was coming and now is in the world already.

4 Little children, you are from God and have overcome them, for he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.

5 They are from the world; therefore they speak from the world, and the world listens to them.

6 We are from God. Whoever knows God listens to us; whoever is not from God does not listen to us. By this we know the Spirit of truth and the spirit of error.

First off, the warning about testing the spirits and the fact that false prophets would be known by their worldliness. Well, JS was quite worldly. Sex, booze, coveteousness, etc. Many of the things JS did while he was the "prophet" were the behaviors that are in direct contradiction of a Godly man. There were a lot "convenient" "revelations" that "permitted" him a great deal of latitude.

Secondly, the "personages" description and the failure of the spirits to clearly identify and confess Jesus during the purported 1st vision.

The narrative (1st vision, [pick a version]) is ambiguous, it does not clearly state that God and Jesus, came down, nor does he claim to have heard the name of Jesus, just "this is my beloved son..." (That IS NOT "confessing" Jesus). It's implied through the use of descriptive language. But at no time does the personage(spirit) state absolutely that it was Jesus who was going to "speak" to JS.

Wishing something to be true doesn't make it true.

When someone intentionally mischaracterizes your words (seems like that is ‘bearing false witness’) in order to attack your words, you don’t actually expect such an one to acknowledge they are in error, now do you? For an example of similar behavior, see the passages in Acts where suborned persons were brought to speak about Stephen (IIRC, chapter nine of ten).

Well, now we can add “slander” to the list of “disrespectful” things we’re “alleged” to have done...the list just keeps growing.

“Mormons are committing the same sin that Satan/Lucifer did that caused God to cast him out of heaven and damn him to eternity in hell.”

So, according to your own words you have condemned all Mormons to the everlasting flames of hell - right along with Satan/Lucifer. Yet you claim that you did not do/say that. Sheeesh already. Can’t have it both ways. Either we Mormons - according to you - are in league with the devil and condemned to hell just as he is or we’re not. Which is it?

Personally, I don’t think it’s your job - nor are you qualified - to judge which human beings are going to hell.

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. “

Of course, and amen. I was making the point that since you believe in the Trinity - that Jesus Christ is the Son of God and that Jesus Christ is Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ is the Holy Ghost - that the Jews are saved because they believe in the God of the Old Testament (Heavenly Father who to you is the exact same God as Jesus Christ and the Holy Ghost). So the Jews are automatically saved and not doomed to hell after all because according to the Trinity doctrine they have accepted Jesus Christ (God of the Old Testament) in their hearts.

“I will bless those who bless you and curse those who curse you.” (Genesis 12:3 and Numbers 24:9). Speaking of the Jews.

So why do Christians keep insisting that the Jews are hell bound because they have not recognized Jesus Christ the Messiah? The Trinity doctrine says they have. Just asking.

P.S. As a Mormon, I don’t appreciate being condemned to hell by mere mortals on this site. I doubt the Jews appreciate it, either.

You have tried that line once before Saundra. Once again, I will say that if you can’t read, and comprehend, what is written you needn’t send me questions or replies.

I will repeat, If you don’t understand what is written don’t expect to be taken seriously.

PD...you rarely if ever answer questions.

Sure you "address" them...with mormon links.

Why don't provide the WHOLE story....by listing links from ex-mormon's....?

http://www.exmormon.org/

http://www.exmormonsforjesus.org/

http://4mormon.org/

Wouldn't that be more helpful....?

Hey I have a question....PD.

If you were on vacation somewhere...and couldn't find a LDS church...would you go to a Christian church?

Honest question.....will you answer it?

“So, according to your own words you have condemned all Mormons to the everlasting flames of hell ...” Saundra, that is not what the post conveys. It is posed conditionally: ‘if you do not repent of this heresy you will die having on your accounts payable the same sin for which Satan IS condemmend to Hell’s fire.’
