Survey: Americans don't know much about religion
Associated Press ^ | 28 Sept 2010 | RACHEL ZOLL

A new survey of Americans' knowledge of religion found that atheists, agnostics, Jews and Mormons outperformed Protestants and Roman Catholics in answering questions about major religions, while many respondents could not correctly give the most basic tenets of their own faiths. Forty-five percent of Roman Catholics who participated in the study didn't know that, according to church teaching, the bread and wine used in Holy Communion is not just a symbol, but becomes the body and blood of Christ. More than half of Protestants could not identify Martin Luther as the person who inspired the Protestant Reformation. And about four in 10 Jews did not know that Maimonides, one of the greatest rabbis and intellectuals in history, was Jewish.... On questions about Christianity, Mormons scored the highest, with an average of about eight correct answers out of 12, followed by white evangelicals, with an average of just over seven correct answers. Jews, along with atheists and agnostics, knew the most about other faiths, such as Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism and Judaism. Less than half of Americans know that the Dalai Lama is Buddhist, and less than four in 10 know that Vishnu and Shiva are part of Hinduism.

Comments on emotional stability from folks who believe in myths, “prophetic” con men and multiple gods including themselves in due time...

Irony always abounds in dealing with the LDS...

As an aside, I have a DVD copy of Star Trek First Contact here in my office I loaned a friend. I have been praying for a Phaser because there is a co worker who I would love to just stun during meetings for the betterment of us all. No luck yet.

Maybe a Blueray copy is more inspired...

So what for you would be the equivalent stand to take against abortion?

Between August, 1858 (the first of 7 debates Lincoln had vs. Douglas) and April, 1861 was a 32-month period.

What did Lincoln accomplish in a 32-month window?

#1 Lincoln spoke out vs. Dred Scott Supreme Court decision in 1858 (decision was in '57). The Dred Scott decision treated slaves as chattel (property). The equivalent today would be for a politician to roundly criticize the 1973 decision of Roe vs. Wade.

#2 Lincoln opposed slavery expansion. Kansas was the "hottest" battleline for slavery in the latter part of the 1850s. The equivalent today would be for a politician to take on the hottest abortion expansion battleline today & take a stand for life.

#3 Lincoln went to war for many reasons beyond slavery (such as "union"). But that doesn't mean that slavery wasn't a part of the whole thing. It was.

IOW, if we expand those 32 months to 80 months, we find Lincoln saying:

Fondly do we hope—fervently do we pray—that this mighty scourge of war may speedily pass away. Yet, if God wills that it continue, until all the wealth piled by the bond-men’s two hundred and fifty years of unrequited toil shall be sunk, and until every drop of blood drawn with the lash, shall be paid by another drawn by the sword, as was said three thousand years ago, so still it must be said “the judgments of the Lord, are true and righteous altogether.”

That would be tantamount to an American president willing to see the deaths of more Americans than all the other wars put together, and then consider it "just" until all the wealth piled by the abortion industry's 40 years of unrequited toil shall be sunk, and until every drop of blood drawn with the suction aspirator, shall be paid by another drawn by the sword...

Could you imagine any Republican politician doing ALL of the above in an 80-month period???

(And then to have someone come along and point how "pro-abortion" they were????)

Just perusing some of the early questions I found it interesting that 18 percent of the poll respondents know/believe the Republicans currently hold the majority in the US House of Representatives.

Haven't figured out how to set the laser printer to stun either.

That’s easy, just don’t hit them too hard on the head or it will revert to the “kill” setting...

And wear a back brace...

Come on over for a walk in my garden. The toads over here haven't got a chance.

Hillers Point at O'Neill Butte by Peter Holbrook just arrived this week. Oil on Canvas, 34x40 inches. A mere $13,500

I guess if you want to split threads that’s fine but it doesn’t change the the outcome of the survey.
How many missions does your church have? people in in glass houses...

“Yep killer, tell me about the how ‘christian’ the mormon church is in demeaning another’s belief eh?”

Well, godzirra, you can’t have it both ways, either I am a bad Christian for stooping to the level of the Anti-Mormon Crowd, (not Christians but christians) or I am not Christian and shouldn’t be held to the same standard. you want us to somehow not point out your fallacies while you hide behind a simple “clubhouse” name.

“Will my prayers bring the charaters and worlds of the Lord of the Rings come to life as well?”

Nice smokescreen... you have taken the same route that many athiests and agnostics use when discussing the Bible though you chose a more direct path to absurdity.

“God (the real one and only one) deals in reality not myth and fiction something for which I am thankful.”

Is this the same god that is one but three (you claim it is only one), everywhere but nowhere, written by the scholars for the emperor constantine? sounds like something out of a good sci-fi to me. so as we continue to debase one another’s beliefs you can see that the only relevant fact is that on a survey, LDS scored higher than Christians on the questions that were asked about religion and score higher than Christians did. deal with it.

Playing the race card. Generally it is only liberals that play that. But against Mormons there is nothing to which some here on FB won't stoop.

Your implication is that Mormons are racist. Do Mormons eat babies also?

Care to explain why Mormons are more conservative also? Of course being more conservative and dissatisfied with 0bama are totally unrelated right.

It all racism!!!!
