Ex-LDS seminary principal gets 5-to-life for abusing student
Salt Lake Tribune ^ | Sept. 20, 2010 | Donald W. Meyers

Posted on 09/20/2010 4:23:53 PM PDT by Colofornian

American Fork » Former LDS seminary principal Michael Jay Pratt will spend at least five years in prison for sexually abusing a student 20 years younger than himself.

Fourth District Judge Christine Johnson imposed concurrent sentences of five years to life in prison for first-degree felony forcible sodomy and two object rape charges, and one to 15 years for forcible sexual assault, a second-degree felony. Johnson said it was a sentence that best balanced the needs of justice and mercy in a case that carried heavy religious overtones.

Pratt pleaded guilty to the crimes in June as part of an agreement in which prosecutors dropped 11 other charges.

Pratt’s attorney, Stephen McCaughey, sought to get Pratt two years in the Utah County Jail followed by a lengthy probation. He said Pratt had no prior criminal record, and the case did not involve violence or physical force. McCaughey argued Pratt would likely serve about six years in prison on the charges.

Pratt said he was sorry for what he had done, and was given enough time to hug his wife before he was escorted from the courtroom by sheriff’s deputies.

Johnson said Pratt’s position as a teacher and spiritual adviser at Lone Peak High School placed him in a position of trust which he abused.

The victim and her family also told the court how Pratt had gained their trust as a dedicated, popular teacher and church leader who was helping the victim through a rough spot in life. He then manipulated the victim into going along with his sexual fantasies.

“Justice was served, but it is a tragedy,” the victim’s stepfather said after the hearing.

You are right. Mormonism doesn’t allow repentance and reinstatement until after the prison term ends.

Makes sense. That you have paid your dues to man doesn’t neccesarily mean you are square with God.

Silly me and here I thought repentance had to do with you and God.

Mormons are clearly Christians.

Not according to all mainstream Christian denominations.

In, fact also not according to the creator of Mormonism.

He distanced himself from ALL Christians at the time, condemned them as not from God and declared the LDS to be the only true religion.

Plus one of the leaders later said that Mormons have a different Jesus/jesus.

Sure he is. Right there in the Bible. Also in the Book of Mormon. We may disagree about the nature of him but he is the same.

Not to teach LDS seminary of course not. I thought we were talking about a public school position being held by a seminary teacher. If they actually have seminary being held at the school that is awesome.

Actually that’s not accurate.

We believe in the very same Jesus Christ who is found in the Bible.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
MORMON FULL DISCLOSURE: Oh, yea, same one... well, our
Jesus is superior. We tell the truth that he was just a creature who got a body and later became one of our FOUR
mormon earth gods. If Christians believe Jesus Christ is
eternally God, neither created nor made, well, hmmmpf!
But we want to be called Christians!
Hey PD....every link you posted is mormon propaganda.
"You see some classes of the human family that are black, uncouth, uncomely, disagreeable and low in their habits, wild, and seemingly without the blessings of the intelligence that is generally bestowed upon mankind... "Cain slew his brother.... and the Lord put a mark upon him, which is a flat nose and black skin. ( B. Young Journal of Discourses, Vol. 7, pp. 290-291)
"Shall I tell you the law of God in regard to the African race? If the white man...mixes his blood with the seed of Cain, the penalty, under the law of God, is death on the spot. This will always be so." (B. Young, Journal of Discourses, Vol. 10, 110)
You guy's can spin it..but you can't hide it.
Anyone with half a brain can look up the exact words of J. Smith, and B. Young....and decide for themselves.
I had a fellow worker...who was a mormon bishop. He called big rocks on his land "nigger heads". And he called them that all the time.....He was TAUGHT that. He was a bishop, in your church. He was a racist, bigot. Personally I believe most mormons are...
The fact is Brigham Young University was a name given in honor of a hero who held the lowest standard of humanity. Consider a mere mortal who stated that men may become Gods except those of a different color.
You don’t know much about Utah and time release Seminary do you?
The LDS Seminary teachers and principals ONLY teach LDS Seminary and are not involved whatsoever with the State School system - the don’t teach any other courses within the scholastic system.
I wonder how much you REALLY know about Mormonism and its practices.
Again, that makes no sense since Mormons are Christian. But anyway, why would one denomination have someone from another denomination teach their classes? You are making no sense.
We don’t hide it at all. This is just one more anti-Mormon propaganda technique regurgitated for the umpteenth time.
Addressed at the links provided. A Non-Issue as usual.
Try looking it up.
And golly why don’t these folks have an issue with it?
http://www.blacklds.org/
Because it’s not an issue. Not to anyone but an anti-Mormon trying to tear down that which is good.
