I am all for good works and right behavior. But I dont elevate them to the place of Savior. They cant save me.
Speaking of that...
"He (Joseph Smith) is the man through whom God has spoken... yet I would not like to call him a savior, though in a certain capacity he was a god to us, and is to the nations of the earth, and will continue to be."
- Brigham Young, Journal of Discourses 8:321
"You call us fools; but the day will be, gentlemen and ladies, whether you belong to this Church or not, when you will prize brother Joseph Smith as the Prophet of the Living God, and look upon him as a god..."
- Herber C. Kimball, Journal of Discourses 5:88
"If we get our salvation, we shall have to pass by him [Joseph Smith]; if we enter our glory, it will be through the authority he has received. We cannot get around him [Joseph Smith]"
- (as quoted in 1988 Melchizedek Priesthood Study Guide, p. 142)
There is "no salvation without accepting Joseph Smith. If Joseph Smith was verily a prophet, and if he told the truth...no man can reject that testimony without incurring the most dreadful consequences, for he cannot enter the kingdom of God"
- Joseph Fielding Smith, Doctrines of Salvation, vol. 1, p.190
"I tell you, Joseph holds the keys, and none of us can get into the celestial kingdom without passing by him. We have not got rid of him, but he stands there as the sentinel, holding the keys of the kingdom of God; and there are many of them beside him. I tell you, if we get past those who have mingled with us, and know us best, and have a right to know us best, probably we can pass all other sentinels as far as it is necessary, or as far as we may desire. But I tell you, the pinch will be with those that have mingled with us, stood next to us, weighed our spirits, tried us, and proven us: there will be a pinch, in my view, to get past them. The others, perhaps, will say, If brother Joseph is satisfied with you, you may pass. If it is all right with him, it is all right with me. Then if Joseph shall say to a man, or if brother Brigham say to a man, I forgive you your sins, "Whosoever sins ye remit they are remitted unto them;" if you who have suffered and felt the weight of transgressionif you have generosity enough to forgive the sinner, I will forgive him: you cannot have more generosity than I have. I have given you power to forgive sins, and when the Lord gives a gift, he does not take it back again."
- Orson Hyde, Journal of Discourses, Vol. 6, p.154-155
"It is because the Lord called Joseph Smith that salvation is again available to mortal men.... If it had not been for Joseph Smith and the restoration, there would be no salvation,"
- Bruce McConkie, Mormon Doctrine, p. 396, 670

To: Ripliancum
Not quite. Faith in Christ, Baptism, and enduring to the end are the requirements for the Celestial Kingdom, according to LDS doctrine.
Here's one of them levels...
THE
DOCTRINE AND COVENANTS
OF THE CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER-DAY SAINTS
SECTION 137
A vision given to Joseph Smith the Prophet, in the temple at Kirtland, Ohio, January 21, 1836. HC 2: 380381. The occasion was the administration of the ordinances of the endowment as far as they had then been revealed.
16, The Prophet sees his brother Alvin in the celestial kingdom; 79, The doctrine of salvation for the dead is revealed; 10, All children are saved in the celestial kingdom.
1
The aheavens were
bopened upon us, and I beheld the
ccelestial kingdom of God, and the glory thereof, whether in the
dbody or out I cannot tell.
2 I saw the transcendent
abeauty of the
bgate through which the heirs of that kingdom will enter, which was
clike unto
dcircling flames of fire;
4 I saw the beautiful streets of that kingdom, which had the appearance of being paved with
agold.
6 And
amarveled how it was that he had obtained an
binheritance in that kingdom, seeing that he had departed this life before the Lord had set his hand to
cgather Israel the second time, and had not been
dbaptized for the remission of sins.
7 Thus came the
avoice of the Lord unto me, saying: All who have died
bwithout a knowledge of this gospel, who would have received it if they had been permitted to tarry, shall be
cheirs of the
celestial kingdom of God;
8 Also all that shall die henceforth without a knowledge of it, who
awould have received it with all their hearts, shall be heirs of
that kingdom;
9 For I, the Lord, will
ajudge all men according to their
bworks, according to the
cdesire of their hearts.
10 And I also beheld that all
achildren who die before they arrive at the
byears of accountability are
csaved in the
celestial kingdom of heaven.

Believe it or not, many people give much more than 10% of their income, they also give the church 10% of their time. I will not sit here and judge anyone but I guarantee you there are not many people who give what they could. I think Glenn Beck is a good man and I wish people would stop bashing him just because he joined the Mormon faith. No, I am not a Mormon.

THE DOCTRINE AND COVENANTS OF THE CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER-DAY SAINTS
SECTION 132
Revelation given through Joseph Smith the Prophet, at Nauvoo, Illinois, recorded July 12, 1843, relating to the new and everlasting covenant, including the eternity of the marriage covenant, as also plurality of wives. HC 5: 501507. Although the revelation was recorded in 1843, it is evident from the historical records that the doctrines and principles involved in this revelation had been known by the Prophet since 1831.
16, Exaltation is gained through the new and everlasting covenant; 714, The terms and conditions of that covenant are set forth; 1520, Celestial marriage and a continuation of the family unit enable men to become gods; 2125, The strait and narrow way that leads to eternal lives; 2627, Law given relative to blasphemy against the Holy Ghost; 2839, Promises of eternal increase and exaltation made to prophets and saints in all ages; 4047, Joseph Smith is given the power to bind and seal on earth and in heaven; 4850, The Lord seals upon him his exaltation; 5157, Emma Smith is counseled to be faithful and true; 5866, Laws governing the plurality of wives are set forth.
19 And again, verily I say unto you, if a man marry a wife by my word, which is my law, and by the new and everlasting covenant, and it is sealed unto them by the Holy Spirit of promise, by him who is anointed, unto whom I have appointed this power and the keys of this priesthood; and it shall be said unto themYe shall come forth in the first resurrection; and if it be after the first resurrection, in the next resurrection; and shall inherit thrones, kingdoms, principalities, and powers, dominions, all heights and depthsthen shall it be written in the Lambs book of Life, that he shall commit no murder whereby to shed innocent blood, and if ye abide in my covenant, and commit no murder whereby to shed innocent blood, it shall be done unto them in all things whatsoever my servant hath put upon them, in time, and through all eternity; and shall be of full force when they are out of the world; and they shall pass by the angels, and the gods, which are set there, to their exaltation and glory in all things, as hath been sealed upon their heads, which glory shall be a fullness and a continuation of the seeds forever and ever. . . 21 Verily, verily, I say unto you, except ye abide my law ye cannot attain to this glory. 32 Go ye, therefore, and do the works of Abraham; enter ye into my law and ye shall be saved. 33 But if ye enter not into my law ye cannot receive the promise of my Father, which he made unto Abraham.

This has quite expectantly turned into a unending Mormon
ism bashing thread, even though tithing is a principle practiced by many denominations.
Perhaps the OP should have the thread title changed... ;-)
I'm out, better things to do than address the usual flak.

If Glenn Beck were to become a Muslim and hold a rally such as the one Saturday, for God and country, then I would say fine. Although the Muslim faith would disallow him to honor God. Therefore it would not be under discussion. It is interesting that he did include men of the cloth from all denominations.

I am not sure I enjoy where Glenn Beck is taking us. Who is "us"? I'm not being taken anywhere by any man (except Christ). How did you all (and the rest of the "us" you mention) allow yourselves to get taken someplace by a mortal man?
Or was that just clumsy semantics?
To: SouthDixie
I am not a great follower of Glenn Beck What does that mean???? You're a lousy follower? Well, my friend, you need to either become a better follower or, better yet, stop following any mortal man at all. Then you won't have all the quandries you've expressed. I listen to Beck on occasion, when I can stomache him. Follow? Allow myself to get taken? No. I will give credit where credit is due, but that's it.
To: RobRoy
If you give 20%, that would be “venting.” :-)
To: Larry Lucido

I made no such assertion, you twisted my words to suit your own agenda. My query was purely out of honesty and curiousity. I have received several intelligent and open responses, unlike yours. I suggest you reread my post and come up with something more concrete other than accusing me of bashing Glenn Beck. tsk tsk

I think most understand Beck does not fully understand the Mormon religion nor has he gone the full gammet. I am inclined to think he may well be a Christian and if so he will one day leave the Mormon organization. Further it isn’t Beck they are slamming as much as Mormonism, Which is not Christian. It is because Mormonism claims the mantel of Christianity which their belief system is dimaetrically opposed to. “Having an appearance” of Christianity only...which Christ warned us about.
Beck will come away in time..and interesting is being influenced greatly by Christians outside of Mormonism...which is a good thing. Time will tell, but when he starts promoting Mormonism as the piped piper of that counterfeit Christianity...his credablility on other issues will be damaged. He will loose his audiance...aside from those who are Mormon.

I didn’t accuse you of bashing Beck. I’m not even a fan (except to give him credit when he does something good). I expressed my curiousity that you were “following” or “being led” (your own words).
