Ad campaign re-branding Mormons as regular folks
Pittsburgh Post Gazette ^ | 8/22/2010 | Ann Rodgers

Posted on 08/23/2010 3:19:13 AM PDT by markomalley

The ads are catchy. Upbeat music plays as the surfer, the artist or the skateboarder states his or her beliefs about life.

They all end with, "And I'm a Mormon."

On July 26, Pittsburgh became one of nine test markets for the advertising campaign that cheerfully counters stereotypes of Mormons as straight-laced, white, humorless and sexist. The campaign from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints includes a revamped website at www.mormon.org.

The ads arrived on the heels of an anti-Mormon backlash by some gay rights activists on the West Coast. But the campaign's designers said it responds only to numerous survey findings that half of Americans don't know a Mormon.

"It's time to reintroduce ourselves," said Scott Swofford, the director of mormon.org.

"We hope the spots portray Mormons as diverse people who are united in their belief in Jesus Christ. ... We hope [Americans] see that Mormons are friendly, charitable, giving to others. We aren't perfect, but our behavior ought to reflect our beliefs."

(snip)

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints teaches that it is the true church, which God restored in the 19th century, long after other churches had lost the complete message of Jesus. The Book of Mormon, considered by the church to be an equal companion to the Bible, says that ancient Israelites came to the Americas around 600 BC and that the resurrected Jesus visited their descendents in America.

The Catholic, Orthodox and Protestant churches don't recognize the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as Christian because it rejects the doctrine of the Trinity. It teaches that God is the father of the spirits of all people born on the earth. Jesus is considered the first of God's spirit children and also God's physical son.

don’t need to for Jesus Christ is at the head

If that were true it would be nice. Penny is in my name but it doesn't mean I have any.

Penny, you make “cents” (I know, lousy pun). You are correct on the facts though resty is typically contrary. In order to make inroads into the Christian community, and especially in today’s information age, they have to morph into something less threatening and more Christian-sounding, “why we’er just like you” folk. For get that they are polytheistic, Jesus brother of satan, progressing to become gods type of folk that look on all of Christianity as an abomination to God.

Isn’t it about the purity of heart? And even if Mormons are wrong on some issues of dogma, the fact “No one comes to the Father except through me.” has them covered. No?

BSA is still a multi-cultural and religious organism. Unfortunately, we’re seeing more and more “ethnic” units. What I mean is, BSA is leaning towards PC.

When I was active in the LdS Scouting program, I lost every “conflict” between young men and Scouting. A non-LdS youth would be faced with two choices, participate in the young men’s activity (missionary work) or find another unit.

Mormonism teaches that Jesus is Satan's brother, and only one God among a multitude of Gods ruling other dominions, and that you may become a Jesus one day on a planet of your own making. Do they believe in the Jesus that spoke those words in the Bible?

Sorry, the “unfortunate” thing about the “ethnic” units is that kids are being segregated instead of integrated, based on various PC related themes. Race and ethnic background are the two primary ones.

"Does what you have said...have any correlation to "climbing the ladder"...in the mormon religion?"

When I got my first "calling", it was as a Primary teacher. It was explained to me that I was to teach the boys so that I could learn the basics, then move up to the quorom above mine and continue to learn, etc.

I don't know if that equates to "climbing the ladder" as you put it. Nor could I give you an accurate assessment on that since I quite after about 6 years.

Are you referring to something akin to "advancement" within the LdS hierarchy?

Thats the kind of thing I was talking about. It makes scouting exclusive and not inclusive.

There's always a condition in mormonism.

They succeeded in killing Joseph, but he had finished his work.

He was a servant of God, and gave us the Book of Mormon.

He said the Bible was right in the main, but, through the translators and others, many precious portions were suppressed, and several other portions were wrongly translated; and now his testimony is in force, for he has sealed it with his blood.

As I have frequently told them, no man in this dispensation will enter the courts of heaven, without the approbation of the Prophet Joseph Smith, Jun.

Who has made this so?

Have I?

Have this people?

Have the world?

No; but the Lord Jehovah has decreed it.

If I ever pass into the heavenly courts, it will be by the consent of the Prophet Joseph.

If you ever pass through the gates into the Holy City, you will do so upon his certificate that you are worthy to pass.

Can you pass without his inspection?

No; neither can any person in this dispensation, which is the dispensation of the fulness of times.

In this generation, and in all the generations that are to come, everyone will have to undergo the scrutiny of this Prophet.

They say that they killed Joseph, and they will yet come with their hats under their arms and bend to him; but what good will it do them, unless they repent?

They can come in a certain way and find favor, but will they?

"If I ever pass into heavenly courts, it will be by the consent of Prophet Joseph"

Ad campaign re-branding Mormons as regular folks

Wow. They can't even be regular folks now. Unbelievable. I guess the regular folks are those that can't have peace in their own religion without sitting around thinking about new and creative ways to send others to hell. Thanks for the article.

Satan was beloved before he fell and since we're all children of and created by God, doesn't that make us all brothers? You seem to be distorting the meaning to disparage Mormons instead of wishing and praying for their enlightenment.

And you can knock off the snarky attitude, its not helping your cause...whatever that is.

That’s weird. The local group encourages non-mormon kids to join their scouting if they want.

Of course, every organization’s different. You really need to look around to find the scouting troop that really matches with what your kid wants and needs. We got into the wrong troop for a while, and now we are in a good troop that my son really likes.

All religions that don't operate purely on Bible scripture are a mystery to me. I just hope people will pray for their brother's eyes to be opened if they are seeking God with a pure heart.

I really hate all the invective and mockery aimed at Mormons. It seems politically calculated.

I was a mormon for 40 years. I was kept in bondage by their mistaken beliefs about God, about Jesus, about salvation... Thank the Lord that I was saved from it into Christ about seven years ago. I have the best reason in the world to be snarky about their deceptive practices.

Don't you dare tell me what they teach or what they believe. My family has been immersed in that cult since the 1830’s - every - single - one - of - them.

Of course they do! This was simply one of their initial step in their "rebranding."

Have you ever heard about the Mormon baseball baptisms? Scouting is used in a similar way.

CC's post is accurate and is not a distortion of mormon teachings. Biblically, ontologically God, angels and man are not the same critter, but separate.

Mormonism teaches that Jesus and Satan are ontologically brothers - same critters - contrary to what the Bible teaches, that Jesus created all things (including Satan). Had you done a little research on your own, you would have realized the only 'snarky' commentary to be your own.

Christian is only mention 3 times in the Bible used in a derogatory way!

If it is so awful why would you want to be branded a Christian? The LDS church needs to stand out as against the Christian Body. I think they should let everyone know what they belive. NO Milk or Meat crap just the truth. God wants us to tell the truth. It should not be something avoided or sugar coated. If you believe that you can work for salvation then that should be your stance.

Jesus Christ is big enough to be enough. If you diminish his work that is your sin not mine. My works are worth a hill of beans. They will not stand up to anything. No matter what I do, what I have done is ten times worse.
