Islam is not the only religion that, when practiced in its orthodoxy, encourages and sometimes requires extreme modesty of its women. Hello, nun habits? Parents force their children to wear Catholic school uniforms. Conservative Christians wear long skirts and even higher necklines. Orthodox Jewish women don't show any skin aside from the ankles, wrists and neck, no matter the weather. Not all Muslim women wear a full burqa; they wear variations of head coverings dictated by their particular sect of Islam and their regional and cultural heritage. So we can point them out and decry the practice as barbaric, but you know what they say about those who throw stones.

It’s not the HAIR covering that’s the problem...it;s the FACE COVERING that should be outlawed by EVERYONE!! It’s a huge security risk and NO ONE has it but the Muzzies.
The French barred the use of the burqa because it does not identify the wearer. What would society be like if everyone was allowed to hide his/her identity? What would be the use of passports, drivers’ licenses and other forms of identification?
Nuns and other religious dress do not hide the wearer’s identity.

The problem with Islam is NOT a case of its treating women MODESTLY. That is NOT what Islam’s behavioral and cultural patterns are about. They treat women like male POSSESSIONS.
THAT is what its all about. Husbands and male relatives can beat their wives. Women are not allowed out unless accompanied by a male realtive. They are not permitted in some countries to converse with a male outside their family. They may not be allowed to operate a motor vehicle. They may be subjected to genital mutilation.
NOTHING like this goes on under any other belief system.
ISLAM is NOT a religion like Judaism or Catholocism. Its a CULT - a cult with social, cultural, governmental and economic aspects.

What utter idiocy. There is no right to be masked in public. For the sake of public safety it used to be and still should be banned.
Nor do muslim women wear those tents out of their own choice but because they are being forced to by their husbands and communities. But worst of all is the fact that the burka isn’t just a garment, but also a statement that all other women are whores who may be freely molested. That alone is reason enough to ban it.
And the claim that Christians may lose rights in the muslim world is so utterly retarded that it defies belief. Right now muslims are already being killed, raped and otherwise misstreated for their faith. Christians are the victims of a slow genocide. It can’t get any worse. If the muslim scum pick up the pace it can only help the Christians since it would make it impossible for the rest of the world to go on ignoring their plight.
This is a stupid article. It misses the whole point. In Muslim culture the burqa is form of female subjugation as part of Sharia Law that consigns them into a second-class inferior status. The analogy to nuns is shockingly absurd as it is a completely free and voluntary religious habit.
Again, the ban is on the covering up of the face....NOT BANNING MUSLIM CLOTHING....if they want to wear a sheet, they can...they just need to have the face uncovered. The law has no mention of Muslim in it....no mention of clothing...only that it would be illegal to cover the face.
No other religion covers the face unless you want to consider a ceremonial veil at weddings and funerals. I doubt the police would crash a funeral to arrest a widow....

The problem is covering the face, and the problem is Sharia Law. Sharia is incompatible with republican liberty and republican rule of law and should not be tolerated.
If you don’t want to live in republican liberty you should not be immigrating here. Immigration is a privilege that should be extended to people who want to live as free men and women, and who want to live as Americans.

I’d say that this article is more supportive of the burqas. Although the author professes not to fully understand the reasons behind the wearing of it, she is attempting to use a nun’s habit in a lightweight attempt to make an equivalency between all religions. As many here have noted: wimples do not cover the face of the good sister within it. Modesty isn’t bad. Concealing one’s face, for a variety of reasons, may be. Doubtless, there are few here that haven’t read the stories of terrorists masquerading as women in vain attempts to evade legal pursuit. While there’s fun to be made there, it’s not something we want to see succeed. Then there’s the dangers inherent in driving while vision is obscured. Not to mention the real reasons, having to do with (always lower case) islam. I am a bit surprised that the author didn’t bring in church veils, since she doesn’t seem especially fond of the Church, but then she didn’t really seem to put too much effort in the article in the first place, or it might have had better internal logic.

Limit the issue to face coverings for security purposes -
which is what it mainly is, I am concerned about the burqa being the ultimate terrorist disguise -

Duh, it’s a security issue! Bin Laden could be walking our streets or visiting the Capitol in a burqa. Or have we gone completely mad and are willing to sacrifice everything to be politically correct to the point of suicide? Any Catholic (and I am one) who believes in this is a social justice squawking moron!
Here's the thing ... I cannot remember the last time I saw a sister in full habit, wimple especially. Most do not wear them, they don civvies. Of course, as my mother taught me way back when, "You should be able to tell she's a nun whether or not she's wearing a habit."
And it's not the parents who are *forcing* children who attend Catholic school to wear a uniform, it is the policy of the school. It's not only Catholic schools which have the policy, either. This whole article has me steamed!
