Execution By Firing Squad Will Be First In 14 Years [Mormon - Open]

Utah death-row inmate Ronnie Lee Gardner is set to be executed by a firing squad on Friday. Thirty-five states allow the death penalty, but death by firing squad remains an option only in Utah.

SNIP

Every detail of April 2, 1985, is burned into her memory. Gardner was in court on a murder charge when he tried to escape. An accomplice slipped him a gun, and he shot and killed an attorney and also severely wounded George "Nick" Kirk, who was a bailiff. Kirk didn't die, but VelDean Kirk says he wasn't the same active, cheerful man anymore. She says his final years were marked by excruciating pain and depression from a sedentary life.

His daughter, Tami Stewart, feels sorry for Gardner, but she can't forgive him. She imagines him in the death chamber. "He's going to feel that fear that he put into every one of those men. He's done. We've given him more than enough," Stewart says.

Gardner did get one choice: how he would die. In court, after being told he'd exhausted his appeals, the 49-year-old made his preference known.

"I would like the firing squad, please," he told the court...

...Utah's last firing-squad execution 14 years ago attracted more than 150 news crews from across the globe. They were interested in one thing: the method of execution.

SNIP

Utah historian Will Bagley says the reason this method of execution exists is rooted in Utah's history as a Mormon sanctuary. "I think we need to be honest about it. We have the last firing squads in the country as a legacy of Mormon theology," Bagley says.

Some early Mormon leaders believed in blood atonement for the most egregious sins. "To atone for those, Jesus' blood didn't count. You had to shed your own blood," Bagley says.

So, as a Presbyterian Elder, you are as ok with Allah as the true God?

Do you feel the Hindus have a path to glory as valid and equal to that provided through Christ's grace?

You mention a "special book" in your quaint little ditty. Did your particular Church decide to toss the Holy Bible, the Word of God? Did you replace it with something off of Oprah's Book Club?

If there is not a Religion and its deity that is ultimately “better” i.e. True then why do you even go to Church much less take a leadership role? What would be the point?

If all paths are equal then even no path is a valid choice, would that not take less time from your personal life?

“Would Jesus hate as much as you do?”

... have you actually ever read the Bible?

Since it seems you don't knw the difference between “internally” and “eternally” as well as you complete lack of knowledge of the LDS and their attacks and slander of your savior, you know, Jesus, perhaps you have heard of him as a “Presbyterian elder”, you will forgive me if I find little to be concerned with in mindless and completely misguided and ignorant rantings.

Come back after you have learned a few things and tossed the "Oprah Winfrey" approach to Christianity...

Ask yourself one question; Would Jesus hate as much as you do?

Hate what? Jesus clearly hated sin enough that he provided the sacrifice to pay the price that we couldn't pay ourselves. Jesus hated false religions and worship (or did you forget Jesus was the one who overturned the tables of the moneychangers? Who called the leaders of the false religions whitewashed tombs, vipers, etc.? Who ridiculed the Pharisees and Sadducces?) The same Jesus was very tender and understanding to those victimized by sin and false teaching (Nicodemus, the woman at the well, etc.)

I'm not afraid to go in front of my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ with my behavior with respect to Mormons. Unlike you, Jesus can actually read my heart and He knows that I don't hate Mormons and that I love His glorious Gospel so much that I can't stand by and watch the perversion of it by Mormonism.

” No one involved in ministry gets rich from it.”.

http://www.ancbt.org/About_Us/About_Pastor.php

From above site.

“Besides being the Senior Pastor of Anchorage Baptist Temple, he is the founder and CEO of three radio stations KATB 89.3 FM, KJLP 88.9 FM, and a new contemporary Christian music station, KAFC 93.7 FM that started broadcasting in 1999. He is also CEO of the television station KCFT Channel 35, broadcasting family programming 24 hours a day. Dr. Prevo can be seen daily on television on the “Anchorage Baptist Temple Hour with Dr. Jerry Prevo,” and heard daily on his radio program, “Bible Principles To Live By.” Dr. Prevo and his wife, Carol, are celebrating 45 years of marriage. Their only child, Allen, is married to the former Holly Jaggers. Allen and Holly have two daughters, Brittani Adair and Brayden Ashley, and a son, Brittain Allen.”

http://www.insurgent49.com/stubbs_prevoland.html

“Prevo has been the head pastor of the Anchorage Baptist temple since 1971 and today he continues to guide his 2,200 patrons into the light. The 350,000 square foot building towers over the corner of Baxter and Northern Lights Blvd. The sky-scraping windows face the man-made streets, while the pristine view of God’s mountains is obstructed by walls. ABT is one of Alaska’s largest churches and Prevo’s coercive control must be recognized.”

How about the tax breaks Jerry is getting on the 9 apartment building he is using to house his school teachers ? Yes, Jerry has his big limos diving him around. I think he has a couple of Hummers parked at the church. The church may not own them just lets them park there.

I thought euthanasia was illegal in Utah? This person got to choose the way he wanted to end his life. No different then assisted suicide correct?

Gardner’s gruesome death was billed as a bloody throwback to Old West-style justice, the first execution of its kind in the United States for more than a decade and possibly the last ever. Execution by firing squad was outlawed by Utah in 2004 but the ban was not retroactive, meaning Gardner was able to choose the method instead of lethal injection during a hearing in April.

“Not true, he grew up LDS and wanted to be re-baptized while in prison but they wouldn’t let him.”

Typical LDS? He first came to the attention of authorities at age 2 as he was found walking alone on a street clad only in a diaper. At age 6 he became addicted to sniffing gasoline and glue. Harder drugs - LSD and heroin - followed by age 10. By then Gardner was tagging along with his stepfather as a lookout on robberies, according to court documents. http://www.wfmj.com/Global/story.asp?S=12659697

If you don’t hate Mormons, you’re not Christian “enough.”

Not really. It's kind of like abortion. If you're not, as a Christian lay leader or Christian denomination, going to protect the pre-born...well, then at least take the ancient physician oath and "do no harm." IOW, don't engage it, don't promote it, don't undergird the abortion industry with it, and don't allow offering plate $ to slide into its hands to kill off the offspring of the next generation of your churchworkers.

So, as this thread also applies to Mormons. By all means, don't hate Mormons! And if you don't want to be provoked by MormonISM, well, oh well. But please. Stop promoting Mormonism, aligning/"ally-ing" with Mormonism, and don't put either $ or PR plugs into the Mormon offering plate.

So. One more time. Back to abortion: I'll ask you again: You claim to be a Presbyterian elder. Is that the PCUSA denomination?

If so, I'm not asking you to speak out against abortion. You don't have to hate abortionists or abortions.

However, I am asking you, that IF you are PCUSA, what's your opinion of your denominational HQ setting up a nation-wide network of insurance plans whereby abortion for your churchworkers is covered by offering plate monies?

Ya I like to know that one to sense it is a lay Church meaning members serving with out pay for about 5 years a member will do the duties for free, than a new bishop will be called!

I don't see how anyone is mystified by this obvious distinction. I see the system of Mormonism as evil and the people deceived by it as victims of that evil system.

If you are LDS, let me ask you this question: Do you hate Islam or Muslims?
