My son in law, Sam, went into the ER with severe abdominal pain the night before last; a CT scan showed a bowel obstruction, tumor, on the right side. He had surgery last night, and 5-6 inches of bowel were removed due to cancer. The doctors said there was no way to foresee this, as he is fairly young. He and my daughter have insurance to take care of the medical expenses, but they have three children under 15. After the surgery, the doctor said he was "cautiously optimistic" but the pathology reports are not due until Thursday, and at that time they'll start to work up a treatment plan.
This is a tremendous unforeseen blow to this nice young family, I'm babysitting for the grandkids while my daughter spends time at the hospital. She's strong, and so is he, their faith is in the Lord. He's Baptist, she's Catholic, they've been happily married 16 years.
I'm very happy for you and your family.

I’ll keep praying. Keep us posted.
Continuing prayers for Sam and all of you during this stressful time. Please keep us posted, dear friend.
Sam has now gotten MRSA. He’s been in the hospital since Mar 9, and last Friday he had laparotomy (after previously having a drain installed in an abscess, unsuccessfully) for abdominal abscess. He has three drains now. The initial surgical wound still has not healed, and is infected. Sam has lost 40 pounds in three weeks, and is very very ill.
His surgeon went on vacation today without telling my daughter, and has left another doctor in charge in his absence that we do not like. This other doctor did minor (!) surgery on my husband when he was dying of cancer, and there was a complication that I am certain shortened my husband’s life and increased his suffering. We have confidence in his primary surgeon, but not this guy.
AM — Please change the title to reflect an update at this post, or let me know if I need to post another thread. Thanks.
More prayers are on the way. I can’t begin to tell you how sorry I am that Sam is so ill. I will be praying and thinking of you all.
Ping.
Ping to post #184.
FReeper Judith Anne's son-in-law Sam has been hospitalized with cancer. He has now developed MRSA and is in desperate need of prayers.
Please address your prayers to Judith Anne.
Thank you and God Bless
Prayers going up!
Sam had a central line put in last Friday so he could receive TPN, (total parenteral nutrition) by IV, he has gone from being a hearty young man to very thin. He is of course getting vancomycin IV, which he has gotten since he was admitted, plus fluids and electrolytes, O2 by nasal cannula; he is getting more exhausted by the day, almost.
I don’t mean to be dramatic, it’s just shocking to see the change in him from three weeks ago. My daughter is extremely worried, and now, with no advance warning, his surgeon left on vacation for a week.
Thank you. My part in all this is to babysit at night so that my daughter can go up to see him and stay as long as she wants in the evening. I’ve been sleeping there, since she sometimes stays till midnight. They both have accrued plenty of vacation, so when needed she takes a day off to be with him.
Sam’s work has a signup sheet and people are making the family meals and dropping them off each day so that the shopping and cooking are not a big chore for Anne. Sam is 40, my daughter Anne is 35. These are really great young people, the salt of the earth. Sam’s Baptist Church and the kids’ Catholic parochial school are all praying daily for Sam.
I will offer prayers for Sam and his family. So sorry to hear of this turn.
Thank you lj. I haven’t posted much; for a while we didn’t know why he wasn’t improving, just seemed to be staying the same, then gradually getting sicker. No fever with this.
Prayers for Sam.
I can understand how your daughter must feel. She’s very lucky to have you there for her during this incredibly difficult time. I can imagine that your entire family is exhausted and stressed. Hang in there, friend.
More humble Prayers...
Oh dear.
Prayers up.
Amen
I’m so sorry. Urgent prayers going up. God bless your son-in-law, and your whole family. (((HUGS)))
