Who are the Catholics: The Orthodox or The Romanists, or both?
Me

Posted on 01/05/2010 9:46:47 PM PST by the_conscience

I just witnessed a couple of Orthodox posters get kicked off a "Catholic Caucus" thread. I thought, despite their differences, they had a mutual understanding that each sect was considered "Catholic". Are not the Orthodox considered Catholic? Why do the Romanists get to monopolize the term "Catholic"?

I consider myself to be Catholic being a part of the universal church of Christ. Why should one sect be able to use a universal concept to identify themselves in a caucus thread while other Christian denominations need to use specific qualifiers to identify themselves in a caucus thread?

“If you need an attorney to establish justification you are already screwed.”

True - the attorneys will all be in hell, and unavailable...suing each other, I guess.

However, if you have evidence that Jesus taught his disciples something, and it has been passed down from 30 AD on, then share it.

Do you want to re-think that? Just asking...

No one worldwide, man-led organization necessary.

Just pro forma: We Catholics agree that an organization which is man-led is not what God had in mind. And, of course, as I've said before, it is only loosely speaking that I can be said to be a Roman Catholic. Technically I am a member of the Church of Richmond which is in communion with the See of Rome.

For me 5 times a day if I make it to Mass. 4 times, 4 services a day otherwise.

1 John 2:1-3

1 My little children, these things write I unto you, that you sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous: 2And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world. 3And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments.

paraklētos Pronunciation pä-rä'-klā-tos (Key)

Outline of Biblical Usage 1) summoned, called to one's side, esp. called to one's aid

a) one who pleads another's cause before a judge, a pleader, counsel for defense, legal assistant, an advocate

b) one who pleads another's cause with one, an intercessor

1) of Christ in his exaltation at God's right hand, pleading with God the Father for the pardon of our sins

c) in the widest sense, a helper, succourer, aider, assistant

1) of the Holy Spirit destined to take the place of Christ with the apostles (after his ascension to the Father), to lead them to a deeper knowledge of the gospel truth, and give them divine strength needed to enable them to undergo trials and persecutions on behalf of the divine kingdom

Yes, we are! But I was thinking along a different line, and mis-followed Mr. Rogers, duh.

I was just thinking of the gorgeous responsorial psalms sung at Ava...

Please read “Dominus Iesus” written by Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger (now Pope Benedict XVI), Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith on August 6, 2000.
In it he speaks of “our separated brethren” who are “ not in full communion” with Rome. He says that where a branch of the church that has maintained valid Apostolic Succession is a Catholic Church and the Holy Orders and sacraments are valid. He specifically recognizes the Orthodox Church and the Old Catholic Church as valid Catholic Churches.
I am an Old Catholic Priest who is a Chaplain in a large hospital, and in an emergency, when a Roman Catholic Priest is not available, I am permitted (by the Catholic Church) to administer the sacraments to Roman Catholics.

Yeah, some of them don’t like it when we call them “our separated brethren.”

I cannot believe you showed up here of all places. Welcome again!

<>The Psalms are prayed on special occasion, especially in Hebrew churches.

Not every day? We sing one every day at Holy Mass and many more during the various hours. Kind of odd that they would only be pulled out on occasion.

“”God DID put parameters on them. Hitler and Mao killed “X” number of people””

If things like this are not against the will of God than neither is any sin because according to what you just said it was God’s will that Hitler was following in only killing 6 million Jews,so why blame Hitler for doing something other than the will of God.

We are supposed to love the will of God,FK -this would mean we are to love God’s will for having killed and tortured 6 million Jews instead of 8 to 10 million.

Calvinism turns God into sovereign blood thirsty monster!

If God is perfection ,how can murdering 6 million Jews be perfection? You know very well it’s not ,dear friend.

Care to explain how God willing murder is perfection knowing that God is perfect in His essence and how His essence is not changed knowing that “God is light, and there is no darkness in Him” (I John i, 5) ?

Where is the light of God in willing the Killing of 6 million Jews?

You must be thinking of the other fellow who masquerades as an angel of light!

I posted the section from Dominus Iesus back on post #1834 that pertains to what you’re saying. This is a tough crowd around here .

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/religion/2421970/posts?page=1834#1834

Says the following...

From Dominus Iesus...

“those who are baptized in these communities are, by Baptism, incorporated in Christ and thus are in a certain communion, albeit imperfect, with the Church....these separated Churches and communities as such, though we believe they suffer from defects, have by no means been deprived of significance and importance in the mystery of salvation. For the spirit of Christ has not refrained from using them as means of salvation which derive their efficacy from the very fullness of grace and truth entrusted to the Catholic Church”

Welcome to FR,Dear Brother.

You forgot this Scripture...

“Therefore, brethren, stand fast; and hold the traditions which you have learned, whether by word, or by our epistle.” -2 Thessalonians 2:14

Well... I googled “St Matthews Tucson” to get the date of an upcoming funeral there, and saw some quote from the list...followed it... and here I am.
It’s an interesting discussion, made more so by opinions that are not very well researched. All of us (me included) have a worldview, which includes religion, and we believe things that are not necessarily true.
Education requires one to change his/her mind. Without change there is no learning.

Even so, the comments are interesting.
