Who are the Catholics: The Orthodox or The Romanists, or both?
Me

Posted on 01/05/2010 9:46:47 PM PST by the_conscience

I just witnessed a couple of Orthodox posters get kicked off a "Catholic Caucus" thread. I thought, despite their differences, they had a mutual understanding that each sect was considered "Catholic". Are not the Orthodox considered Catholic? Why do the Romanists get to monopolize the term "Catholic"?

I consider myself to be Catholic being a part of the universal church of Christ. Why should one sect be able to use a universal concept to identify themselves in a caucus thread while other Christian denominations need to use specific qualifiers to identify themselves in a caucus thread?

I kind of like pseudepigrapha myself.

Anyone supporting someone who’d do that to a baby has no excuse.

Must everyone agree with maledictory imprecations written by Quix? I pray she may find Christ's mercy.

No one here supports Coakley. She has done evil things, and no one denies it. But I will only pray for her salvation. Christ NO WHERE commands His followers to pray maledictions; instead, God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever, including Martha Coakley and Bill Clinton, believeth on Him should not perish, but have eternal life.

...where vicar is related to the word "vice" as in "vice-president"...

Unfortunate, isn't it, that "vice" has taken on another meaning in modern English?

I prefer to refer to vicar as derivative of vicarious and directly related to the French "lieutenant" (literally: "place holder").

YMMV

Pseudepigrapha are works whose authors are hidden or misstated or different than labeled/thought, and thus the definition differs significantly from the deuterocanonicals.

Don’t make me draw a Venn diagram!

In all seriousness, would it be inappropriate to pray, “May her words and deeds be seen by man as You see them”?

I don’t think I would want that prayed about me...

INDEED.

Only Christ’s strengthening can enable me to bear to see myself as He HAS shown me.

That is headed our way at a faster and more intense and larger scope than ever before.

I can second that quite wholeheartedly *and* objectively.

If Apostolic Succession was so unimportant, why has the Church always kept the records of it? Why do Protestant churches try to claim it (some legitimately have it and others don't).

I have no idea why some Protestants try to claim it...all I know is Christ never instituted it, Peter never claimed the right to pass on what was given to the apostles, neither did Paul or James..

The tradition is made out of whole cloth

See, that’s the problem with evil...it’s contagious. When someone does something so outrageous that even a little sick lady like me wouldn’t spit on them if they were on fire, it is very very difficult to remember Christ.

BUT! He died for my sins as much as for anyone’s. I’m definitely in need of His Saving Grace. So I pray that God will bless sinners, especially those most in need of His mercy. The shepherd goes out to find the LOST sheep. Coakley appears to be lost. I am no one’s judge.

To curse someone is a malediction. Christ told us 1) Love God above all 2)Love our neighbor as ourselves 3) To pray for our enemies 4)return good for evil 5)show the world we are His by our love for one another.

Wrath is one of the cardinal sins; we are all sinners. We must not let evil infect us, but in any way we can, we should obey Him.

“Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from Martha Coakley” might work...;-D

What did Jesus say about tradition??? The church Fathers were not infallible sources of truth, they sometimes even disagreed with each other

Matt 15: 2 Why do your disciples transgress the tradition of the elders? for they wash not their hands when they eat bread. 3 But he answered and said to them, Why do you also transgress the commandment of God by your tradition? 4 For God commanded, saying, Honor your father and mother: and, He that curses father or mother, let him die the death. 5 But you say, Whoever shall say to his father or his mother, It is a gift, by whatever you might be profited by me; 6 And honor not his father or his mother, he shall be free. Thus have you made the commandment of God of none effect by your tradition. 7 You hypocrites, well did Esaias prophesy of you, saying,

8 This people draws near to me with their mouth, and honors me with their lips; but their heart is far from me.
9 But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.

From Peter

18 Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; 19 But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot: 20 Who verily was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you, 21 Who by him do believe in God, that raised him up from the dead, and gave him glory; that your faith and hope might be in God.

Wise as a serpent and spiritually demonic.

Is that a godly thing to say? Might we call it a curse?

And the actual quote is

Matt 10:16 Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves.

I have no idea why some Protestants try to claim it...

Because the know it's important.

all I know is Christ never instituted it, Peter never claimed the right to pass on what was given to the apostles, neither did Paul or James..

The verses I posted clearly say otherwise.
