Who are the Catholics: The Orthodox or The Romanists, or both?
Me

Posted on 01/05/2010 9:46:47 PM PST by the_conscience

I just witnessed a couple of Orthodox posters get kicked off a "Catholic Caucus" thread. I thought, despite their differences, they had a mutual understanding that each sect was considered "Catholic". Are not the Orthodox considered Catholic? Why do the Romanists get to monopolize the term "Catholic"?

I consider myself to be Catholic being a part of the universal church of Christ. Why should one sect be able to use a universal concept to identify themselves in a caucus thread while other Christian denominations need to use specific qualifiers to identify themselves in a caucus thread?

My response was to this statement "That’s it, that’s the idea: this very quote. The law of Moses, so solemnly proclaimed to the Jews — to circumcise men, to stay away form pork, etc — was lifted by a sovereign decision of the Church.
And I have read in previous comment(s) that the "old laws" were thrown out, so I posted scripture from the New Testament showing that we're still not allowed to worship idols, statues, images, etc.

You left out a biggie ..Matt 5:18 I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished.

. Gods law is still full in effect

Thank God for grace

"I have another. If we have the Bible, why the need for the catechism ?"

You have most of a bible. Your fathers have decided to withhold certain books from you. However, the bible is the the first word product of the tradition of the Catholic Church, the Catechism is the second.

I just don’t see anywhere in scripture where God says, “I have two types of grace. Grace A forces you to be damned, and Grace B forces you to be saved

Eph 4:7But to each one of us grace has been given as Christ apportioned it.

So if the Father wants all men saved.. why does He give more grace to some than others? Why does He not give enough drawing grace so all men without exception have an honest shot to come????

So are you a Wesleyan? They are really big on the Prevenient grace thing...never seeing that it would be unfair of God not to give enough "drawing grace" to everyone ...:)

But to have to go to a University in another State just to learn what your church teaches must mean it's a far more complex organization than I'd be interested in...

Good thing that's not necessary.

Here is what the Catholic Church teaches:

If we have the Bible, why the need for the catechism ?

If everyone agreed on the meaning of Scripture, there would be no need.

As a child I learned the Latin of the Mass and its meanings and for me like hundreds of millions of other Catholics the Mass was not foreign babble, it was a well understood celebration.

Bet you were an altar boy

Americans celebrated Vatican 2 and the use of the local language..

The way you all reason is remarkable!

You found the Scripture perspicuous
I found one part of Scripture less than utterly opaque.

Why then are you not at liberty in Catholicism to interpret all of Scripture for yourself?
For the same reason that the Judaizers were obliged, with Paul to take their disagreement to the Council at Jerusalem and then to abide by the decsision which the Council described as seeming good to the Holy Spirit as well as to themselves.

You post self-serving protestant maps that do not include boundaries and expect that to be authoritative?

The Roman Catholic catechism is the OTHER word of God...

That's not what he said.

He referred to the Catechism of the Catholic Church.

Says you, a mere man. Scripture is scripture, no denying the word of God.

LOL!

So it's a good thing I wasn't denying the Word of God, but rather the faulty reasoning a Mere Human tried to apply to it. It's sounding like you have your thoughts mixed up with the thoughts of Him who says, "My thoughts are not your thoughts."

No, I'm not serious...

Your loss.

.But to have to go to a University in another State just to learn what your church teaches must mean it's a far more complex organization than I'd be interested in...

If you think that's an example of a legitimate argument you need some other education first -- or to quit trying to construct arguments.

Nowhere, not in any single place, did I say you HAD to go to University in your own state or in any other. (One problem you all seem to persist in is knowing the difference between what's inside your own head and what isn't.)

In no place did I say that my two friends were the only teachers that you could go to. And only one of the two is a professor. Assuming beyond your date again. You guys do that a lot.<>p>I made the mistake of offering you the best I could think of at the spur of the moment. Unwisely scattered pearls, once again.

"Bet you were an altar boy"

Yes, as were my father and uncles when young, my brother and male cousins, and all of the boys in my grade school from the 3rd grade onward. However, my mother, sisters, female cousins, aunts, and grandmothers knew the the Latin and the meanings of the mass. It is sad that you attribute your deficiencies to the Church and not yourself.

Thank you. I have been feeling a tad bit over whelmed providing so much scripture, only to be asked to provide more....to no avail.

I missed the part where images of, say, the Virgin Mary or of Joseph or Dominic are mentioned in the Old Testament. I know idols of false gods are mentioned, but not MY holy images. And, it doesn't matter how many times you say it, repetition only establishes truth among Nazis and Stalinists. You can't show it because it's not there.

Deut5:7“You shall have no other gods before me.
8“You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below.
9You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God,
punishing the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me,

10but showing love to a thousand [generations] of those who love me and keep my commandments. 11“You shall not misuse the name of the LORD your God, for the LORD will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name.

I think Mary was on the earth right?:)

Well they share a works based salvation so it might work.

Ah yes, the classic false dichotomy "faith-based or works-based."

Both faith and works are required. The Catholic Church rightly condemns both faith-alone and works-alone.
