Who are the Catholics: The Orthodox or The Romanists, or both?
Me

Posted on 01/05/2010 9:46:47 PM PST by the_conscience

I just witnessed a couple of Orthodox posters get kicked off a "Catholic Caucus" thread. I thought, despite their differences, they had a mutual understanding that each sect was considered "Catholic". Are not the Orthodox considered Catholic? Why do the Romanists get to monopolize the term "Catholic"?

I consider myself to be Catholic being a part of the universal church of Christ. Why should one sect be able to use a universal concept to identify themselves in a caucus thread while other Christian denominations need to use specific qualifiers to identify themselves in a caucus thread?

Cutting and pasting always goes right along with finding suddenly grammatically correct posts about somebody else’s faith.

Dr E. Welcome to the ad hominem thread....

I'm not sure I follow the reasoning here. Where in Scripture does it say that God rejected Cain's sacrifice because it was bloodless? God may reject a bloodless sacrifice, but possibly accept another.

The bloody sacrifice was a type of Christ all through the OT, starting with the skins God covered the nakedness of Adam and Eve with..He ordered bloody sacrifices for the covering/ forgiveness of sin throughout the OT .. Abel did as God commanded and took the best of his animals and slay it , Cain disobeyed and brought a false sacrifice.. one that could never cover his sin . I do nor much care what Cramer thinks unless he is infallible :)

Hebrews 11:4 By faith Abel offered to God a better sacrifice than Cain, through which he obtained the testimony that he was righteous, God testifying about his gifts, and through faith, though he is dead, he still speaks.

No set up, I just wanted you to remember...I wanted you to think it through, I did not want to have to spoon feed it to you.

Oh, really? Then, when Natural Law gave the explanation to you that was demanded from me, you were dissatisfied because you wanted to push something you believe onto ME? Did I sign up for some class you teach?

That's making it personal. Against the RF rules.

Hmmm...It may have nothing to do with feelings...What's God say about it???

Exactly.. Post modernism has so infiltrated the churches that people think it is all about feelings..

I know all that which you just posted. I just didn't see how no unbloody sacrifice is acceptable. The unclear passage in Genesis seems to suggest that Cain's motives were bad. And while they are accompanied by the sacrifice of dumb animals there are offerings of sheaves in the Holiness Code.

And that's before we get to the relationship between Our Lords Sacrifice and the Mass.

Not if you are Calvinist.

Well...do tell, tell me what I believe?

Calvin believed that every man was unable to believe in God until the Reformed Holy Spirit hijacked his soul, and thereafter, was unable to not believe in God. This is true slavery by force. Paul's words mean bondsman or indentured servant. If you are Calvinist, then this is a serious departure from Calvinism, perhaps a complete departure.

St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle, be thou our safeguard against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him/her, we humbly pray. And do thou, o prince of the heavenly host, by the power of God, cast into hell all the evil spirits who prowl about the religion forum, seeking the ruin of souls.

Actually Michael is the angel assigned,by God, to guard Israel.. Daniel 10:13,31; 12:1 and Last I heard it is still God, not the church that assigns angels ... I suspect Michael is a bit busy in the mid east right now:)

There is no scripture that suggest prayer to angels..in fact one must wonder just how an angel becomes a "saint", as a "Saint " is one in Catholic speak ,that lived a holy life..and did a few miracles after they died.. Seeing that michael never had sin, never lived a human life with all its temptations and was never saved by the blood of Christ ...it is really hard to figure out how the whole saint thing applies to them..but anyway..I think I will pray directly to the one Michael answers to in the chain of command :)

4”When you bring a grain offering baked in the oven as an offering, it shall be unleavened loaves of fine flour mixed with oil or unleavened wafers smeared with oil. 5And if your offering is a grain offering baked on a griddle, it shall be of fine flour unleavened, mixed with oil. 6You shall break it in pieces and pour oil on it; it is a grain offering. 7And if your offering is a grain offering cooked in a pan, it shall be made of fine flour with oil. 8And you shall bring the grain offering that is made of these things to the LORD, and when it is presented to the priest, he shall bring it to the altar. 9And the priest shall take from the grain offering its memorial portion and burn this on the altar, a food offering with a pleasing aroma to the LORD.” - Lev 2

I’m not a theologian...does a grain offering count as a sacrifice?

“15 Through him then let us continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that acknowledge his name. 16Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God.” - Hebrews 13

Thanksgiving to God, and doing good and charity count!

Try not to worry, Mark. Really try.

"Be not afraid; only believe." -- Mark 5:36

In the case of the Christian, this Marcian passage means to believe in God and accept Him. What does it mean to the Calvinist?

Re: the unpardonable sin, I read this today in 1 John 5...

Any chance of you reading the Gospel of Jesus Christ? It's nice to see that your Bible contains other than Paul and the OT, don't get me wrong. But in order to call one's self a Christian, one must believe in Christ.

I"m just trying to clarify and to present how we think of it, not to persuade you that we're right, though of course I think we are, just as, of course, you don't.

I actually enjoy your posts dawg..

I know how strongly Catholic (and Lutherans and Anglicans, and the Orthodox) believe this..

My point, that I seem to keep missing is that when someone says it was always believed and always accepted as truth..it just is not so..
