Who are the Catholics: The Orthodox or The Romanists, or both?
Me
Posted on 01/05/2010 9:46:47 PM PST by the_conscience
I just witnessed a couple of Orthodox posters get kicked off a "Catholic Caucus" thread. I thought, despite their differences, they had a mutual understanding that each sect was considered "Catholic". Are not the Orthodox considered Catholic? Why do the Romanists get to monopolize the term "Catholic"?
I consider myself to be Catholic being a part of the universal church of Christ. Why should one sect be able to use a universal concept to identify themselves in a caucus thread while other Christian denominations need to use specific qualifiers to identify themselves in a caucus thread?

Why do YOU think the Roman Catholic Church is so attacked and condemned? Could it have anything at all to do with the exclusivity factor? I think it is as Jesus predicted we would be. The Catholic Church is the Church. As such it is the enemy of the world. It's now how the, generally gnostic, world thinks it would play out, but in venal clerics and fractious nuns, in lay people who think they can trick God, and in the rest of us, there is the silent word, pleading for all mankind.
We're not pretty, we're not especially good. We're kind of overweight and sentimental. We're earthen, in spades.
Satan sees it and trembles.

If you are actively involved in the original event, it is not remembering, but participating. Even ordinarily that is not true. I can both remember being at my son's birth and celebrate it today with him. And my son is wholly human.
You problem is with St. Paul, not with me. He spoke of the physical body of Christ, then told us it is a damnable sin not to discern it in the celebration of the Last Supper.

So does that mean to say that the Rabid Calvinist Community says it build images and bows down to those and PRAYS to those images?? Shame.
The Church (the Catholic Church) doesn't pray to any images. We pray to God. What else has Calvin taught? Didn't Calvin also set up a police state in Geneva?

"Your other point is that God's word uses hyperbole and YOUR word uses hyperbole so therefore, um, your word is as true as God's and shouldn't be required to conform to the standards of reason.
[edging away ...] Okay. Sure."
OK, no graphics (Killjoy!)
And I'll try really, really hard not to be witty.
I merely thought injecting some visual and verbal fun into this oh-so-serious discussion might "loosen up the cilice" on a few people. (Fighting with everything I have not to post another graphic...)
In all true humility, I may be guilty of a fallacy of accident. By the same token however, it may be that my use of a rhetorical device similar to those found in scripture, while not by its mere use imputing truth, certainly does not detract from my argument simply because of its similarity to the scriptural device - which brings me to the 53rd Calypso of Bokonon: ".....Nice, nice, very nice; Nice, nice, very nice; Nice, nice, very nice-- So many different people In the same device."
Gosh Darn it all to heck!
Ok, keep edging away.....

"The Protestant hermeneutics is a diabolical tool of deception, plain and simple. This attempt to bypass an entire clear chapter of St. Paul is a good illustration of how it works."That is exactly my meaning. My comparison to the Catechism was that it Protestant hermeneutics were a poor substitute.

catholic means universal, not the Catholic church. All true christian churches are included.

Please show us the Scripture where God commands the Jews to pray to anyone or anything other than God.
Now, that's making things up -- no one said that God commanded anyone to pray to the Cherubim.
You said, "DrE: Nowhere in Scripture does God command anyone to construct a statue or graven image and kneel to that image in prayer." --> And I gave you two examples where God commanded people to create graven images. God also told them to look on it in awe (the serpent image) but, like in The Church, we don't worship those images, we may kneel to it as the Israelites looked to the serpent in awe, but we don't consider those images to be God in any way.
That statement was typically Calvinist, mis-stating and mis-understanding (deliberately) everything. First statement "DrE: Nowhere in Scripture does God command anyone to construct a statue or graven image and kneel to that image in prayer." No mention of praying to that image -- so when the responder gives examples of images being constructed, the Calwino says "Please show us the Scripture where God commands the Jews to pray to anyone or anything other than God." -- two different things.
Or, are you saying that Orthodox Presbyterians believe that because the Israelites made the serpent image and the cherubim on the Ark, the OPC believes that they were idolators???? Shame! We Catholics believe NO such thing, but does the OPC believe that??

Christ did redeem us from the wall of sin which seperated us from a Holy God.
Yes, and that is what The Church believes. Christ did redeem us, by breaking down that wall that separates us from God. Christ also called on us to be Holy and live our lives in God and, more importantly, accept God's grace. God's grace is what saves us, like a big giant hand waiting to help us across the puddle of life, but we have to accept that hand, or we fall into the puddle.

So, are you saying that the Orthodox Presbyterians consider Baptist beliefs to be correct and holy? Doesn't the OPC perform infant baptism, which Baptist think is incorrect?
Isn't it true that the OPC considers Theonomy the ideal, that being anti-Baptist?

wait.... we don't do this on St. Machen day?
Interesting, so you say that for the Orthodox Presbyterians, Machen has been demoted to saint from demi-god?

Yes, and afterward we praise God, not each other.
