Who are the Catholics: The Orthodox or The Romanists, or both?
Me

Posted on 01/05/2010 9:46:47 PM PST by the_conscience

I just witnessed a couple of Orthodox posters get kicked off a "Catholic Caucus" thread. I thought, despite their differences, they had a mutual understanding that each sect was considered "Catholic". Are not the Orthodox considered Catholic? Why do the Romanists get to monopolize the term "Catholic"?

I consider myself to be Catholic being a part of the universal church of Christ. Why should one sect be able to use a universal concept to identify themselves in a caucus thread while other Christian denominations need to use specific qualifiers to identify themselves in a caucus thread?

You actually don't see the difference between a painting of a saint and falling down in prayer before that painting?

If not, no wonder the RCC so easily disregards the commandments of God.

your question was -- Annalex said "a Catholic is instructed to examine his conscience before presenting himself for Holy communion", to which you said "Interesting. So here the Roman Catholic is to trust his conscience, but the Protestant who believes in Jesus Christ is not to trust in or rely on his conscience. " ---> apples and oranges: Annalex says about examining your concience prior to Holy communion and you ask a question about some trusting their conscience to follow the teachings of Machen like the OPC does and to make Machen some kind of demi-god if not God.

Why do they do that?

What does the Raving Calvinsit Coven have to do with anything?

I see your problem. Apparently you didn't finish reading my sentence you quoted. Here. Let me help you.

You quoted me as saying...

Decorating the tabernacle with a few angels is not the same thing as building statues...

But what I actually wrote was...

Decorating the tabernacle with a few angels is not the same thing as building statues and praying to those statues when the Triune God alone demands all our prayers.

The hair-splitting is being done by Rome when the RCC says it builds graven images and bows down to those graven images and prays to those graven images, but it isn't breaking God's commandment to refrain from exactly that.

Yes big difference from what was in the Tabernacle as to what is in people's front yards in bathtubs.

The two angels on the Ark were where the Shekinah rested and if any bowing was done it had to be by the high priest not the people. (The ignorance of the bible here is always so revealing, especially when Catholics attempt to use Hebrew beliefs and theology, which they obviously know zero about, to defend Catholicism)

DrE: Nowhere in Scripture does God command anyone to construct a statue or graven image and kneel to that image in prayer.

Cronos: 1. The serpent's image constructed by Moses.

2. The angels and cherubim on the Holy of Holies, the Ark, to which the Jews bowed. In both of those cases, just like in the art in Churches, those statues, paintings etc. do not contain God or any part of Him, they are merely images. In both cases, just like in Church, those images are not worshipped, they are venerated as pointers to The One who deserves worship -- God.

Regardless of RC deflection, the question is not "bowing" to something but falling to one's knees in "prayer."

Please show us the Scripture where God commands the Jews to pray to anyone or anything other than God.

I'll ask a few Jewish FRiends if they know of any such Scripture.

"The hair-splitting is being done by Rome when the RCC says it builds graven images and bows down to those graven images and prays to those graven images..."

Who is splitting hairs. You have withdrawn your claim regarding the prohibition against creating images, but now focus on their usage. You continue to confuse the legitimate veneration of a sacred image with the sin of idolatry.

Though bowing can be used as a posture in worship, not all bowing is worship. In Japan, people show respect by bowing in greeting (the equivalent of the Western handshake). Similarly, a person can kneel before a king without worshiping him as a god. In the same way, a Catholic who may kneel in front of a statue while praying isn’t worshiping the statue or even praying to it, any more than the Protestant who kneels with a Bible in his hands when praying is worshiping the Bible or praying to it.

Now, go look up the definitions of the words veneration, intercession, icon, idolatry, and worship so that you understand the unique meaning of each and are able to differentiate between them.

RCC = Raving Calvinist Coven

Yes indeed Cronos,.... Christ did redeem us from the wall of sin which seperated us from a Holy God.

The “accuser of the brethern” would have us think otherwise, as if pointing to our sins before our Holy God,... but then Jesus steps into that gap and wall of seperation saying, “Excuse me Father but I paid for that.”... and we can know the full meaning of forgiveness as God now sees us thru the righteousness of His Son Christ Jesus.

“Grace”..that would save a wretch like me.” Comes to mind...

Around 2,000 years ago . . . in the Middle East . . . Jerusalem, to be a bit more precise . . .

There was another set of 'learned,' highly educated anyway, political, bureaucratic, elite power-mongering RELIGIOUS !!!!CONTROLLING!!!! and !!!!DEMANDING!!!! RULERS . . .

They ALSO invented a lot of new words, rationalizatioins, excuses, convoluted rules and interpretations . . .

To render God's Word of no effect . . . so their pride, power-mongering, !!!!CONTROL!!!! and !!!!DEMANDS!!!! on the poor and the RELIGIOUS serfs could continue unfettered.

Clearly, it's BUSINESS AS USUAL in some circles . . . with . . . "adoration," "veneration," fawning all over, addictive devotion to, wearing toes & fingers of marble idols away with kisses . . . etc. etc. etc. etc. violating the letter AND the spirit of God's Word.

I'm sure He gives the idolators a free pass for the cleverness of their rationalizations.

If you're a Baptist, then your beliefs are anathema to OPCers and heretical to many evangelicals.

lol. That is flat-out false.

Read the Westminster Confession of Faith. No visible church on earth is perfect, and the truth of Christ is found in a variety of Trinitarian Christian churches, some more and some less pure according to their adherence to the word of God, the holy Bible.

Words like "anathema" and "heretical" are more in keeping with those who follow "another Christ."

lollol. The nuns we had at a school had mustaches. Now I’m beginning to wonder after all the scandals if they were “nuns” after all.

One of my colleagues in China was a precious Mary Knoll Sister.

Though, interestingly, she was convinced that good Buddhists would go to Heaven whether they believed in Christ, or not. Curious.

I could imagine one who in his heart dearly sought to know Almighty God . . . meeting Christ at his moment of death and being given a choice.

Scripture does say HE THAT SEEKS ME SHALL FIND ME. However, NO MAN COMES TO THE FATHER BUT THROUGH CHRIST. No way around that—however it happens may be up to God, for sure . . . but no way around that.

I also have no idea, but apparently it’s heretical to know as well as not know about him. I think he wrote the Godfather trilogy. Or maybe it was that one about the Hobbits

C.S. Lewis’ close buddy.

Thanks.

One of us ought to go to bed.

I actually changed my sheets tonight. Love clean sheets after a shower.

Printing the last page on my ASSIGNMENTS/TASKS part of my COURSE GUIDE. Yea.

Heading to bed shortly.

That’s the fantasy anyway.

Does this mean we get to keep our ivory and/or marble idol toes and fingers? Because I’m attached to them and they’re attached to me

The best solution is to become a Pentecostal!
