One Baptist Church To Celebrate Halloween By Burning Bibles

CANTON, N.C. (October 13, 2009)—The Amazing Grace Baptist Church in Canton, N.C. will celebrate Halloween by burning Bibles that aren’t the King James Version, as well as music and books and anything else Pastor Marc Grizzard says is a satanic influence.

Among the authors whose books Grizzard plans to burn are well known ministers Rick Warren and Billy Graham because he says they have occasionally used Bibles other than the King James Version, which is the sole biblical source he considers infallible.

According to the church’s Web site, members will also burn “Satan's music such as country, rap, rock, pop, heavy metal, western, soft and easy, southern gospel, contemporary Christian, jazz, soul (and) oldies.

“We will also be burning Satan's popular books written by heretics like Billy Graham, Rick Warren, Bill Hybels, John McArthur, James Dobson, Charles Swindoll, John Piper, Chuck Colson, Tony Evans, Oral Roberts, Jimmy Swagart, Mark Driskol, Franklin Graham, Bill Bright, Tim Lahaye, Paula White, T.D. Jakes, Benny Hinn, Joyce Myers, Brian McLaren, Robert Schuller, Mother Teresa, The Pope, Rob Bell, Erwin McManus, Donald Miller, Shane Claiborne, Brennan Manning (and) William Young.

During the book burning, according to the Web site, barbecued chicken fried chicken and “all the sides” will be served.

How can imperfect men perfectly translate Greek and Aramaic languages to English and have it be a perfect representation of the original?

The same way we translate from one language to another every day.

The Koine (common) Greek language was so widespread during the days of the Roman Empire that the task of translating the Bible into English (or French, Russian, etc.) is a simple one. Had it been instead written in some obscure dialect, there would be room for skepticism and doubt.

And since languages still in use change over time, any translation - of anything - may need periodic updating. However, since the KJV is commonly-used, its wording, though outmoded in places, is still quite understandable.

Can new translations be helpful to those unfamiliar with KJV-era English? Yes, of course. But not all "translations" are true to the original. These should, of course, be rejected.

current day Bibles are translated from 2 different sources, both of which do not agree in some places.

Most translations clearly note these rare discrepancies, leaving the final decision to the reader. I have yet to find any discrepancy which substantiallly confused the reading. But it's always a convenient point of criticism, nevertheless, for those who merely want to reject the Bible wholesale.

In our day, it's possible for anyone to learn Koine Greek for himself. So anyone who doubts the KJV (or any other version, for that matter) can confirm or alleviate those doubts to his own satisfaction.

But seriously. Paul requested that his letters be copied and sent to other churches. I for one don't have a problem with the idea of people reading the Bible for themselves. But if you're unable or unwilling to do so, I guess you're doomed to dependence on some fallible man to do it for you.

Fortunately there are always some who're willing to set aside the teachings of men and return instead to the Scriptures. That was Luther's aim, though like the rest of us he did it imperfectly. His main contribution was to reject the extrabiblical teaching of Catholicism and return us to the Word of God.

That work continues even today, since as you point out "there are a zillion churches, denominations, splinters, and sects out there." How many of these are comprised of folks searching the Scriptures for instruction? And how many are full of people following mere men? I couldn't say - though I hear lots of folks just like you who have put their trust in men to tell them what's in the Bible rather than read it for themselves. It's very sad.

They are only burning Bibles written in English. Except of course King James English.

Our Church believes in the "In-errancy of the Autographa", that is that the Holy Spirit supervised and kept Scripture pure "Thy Word is Pure" in the Original Writings by the authors of the Bible.

What is impressive is how few errors have crept into the good copies and translations over the centuries. God has been so good to preserve it, since man has tried to destroy it in just about every generation.

Why don't you go to one sometime and report back to us? Unless you're at a very unusual parish, you'll find:

1. It's all in English
2. There are three (two on weekdays) substantial Bible readings, in English and a Psalm, in English
3. There are lots of other quotations from scripture
4. Even if you go to a Latin Mass, they'll almost certainly give you the readings in both Latin and in English. And there's a book you can pick up in the back of the church that gives you everything, word for word ... in English

Posting stuff like this just proves that your opinion of the Catholic Church is based on what someone else told you about it, not on "the facts on the ground".
