Joseph Smith’s Modalism: Sabellian Sequentialism or Swedenborgian Expansionism?

I think the answer is clear.

Ping all of the anti-Mormons quick, so that they can make themselves feel better about their faith, by snickering and inside-joking at another. That is what “real” Christianity is about. AMEN Brothers and old denture-wearing Sisters.

Excellent analysis. It’s hard to get in the mind of Joseph - the author has done well.

The question is legitimate. Joseph Smith did not teach trinitarianism, and it was once upon a time a form of modalism. The question is about the form of modalism he taught, but in conclusion it is about his being polytheistic.

The article is not a diatribe. It has the tone of a scholarly presentation. It is no different than any other critique I’ve seen of any other theologian..

The writings of someone educated beyond their intelligence.

After wading through the quicksand of “sequential modalism, expansionistic modalism, and Sabellian Sequentialism or Swedenborgian Expansionism”, we're left with “Yet even with changes so vast, the aroma of Joseph Smith’s early modalism continued to flavor to the end his thinking and his description of the relationship between the Father and the Son.”.

In other words, Smith's early statements of belief could be seen in his later writing.
To which I can say, AND. And what?

If I want to Evangelize, which is the persuasion of the director of IRR, I should think I'd be less concerned with the flavor and aroma of Smith's writing and teachings and more concerned with the meat of whether such teachings are Scriptural.

I never questioned a legitimate question, I question the same old losers on here who’s only bond with their ilk, is to gather together with a negative cause.

They speak in the name of righteousness, but are really doing the devil’s work by spreading negative energy amongst their fellow man (happy believers) through hurtful murmurings just to fill a void in their lonely lives. They act as a squad of “truth” when in reality, they cast dipsersions to amuse one another and to hear themselves speak. Most of them are single and/or divorced, which prevents them from being truly happy, so they must claim a cause and attach God to it. They will not be rewarded for their deeds, as they all know that Christ’s workings do not include an air of superiorority over their peers.

Let the fruits of our lives determine our judgements, not the calculating and idol words of the unhappy.

I don’t understand how this site has become a place to bash Mormons, I say that because no matter how you look at this “theologic” article, it is just put out there as a negative comment on the religion of millions of people, most of which are “conservatives” which means they are on the same side as people on this site. It sickens me. As for what Joseph Smith meant? That seems plain to anyone who follows his teachings. Why does he talk about Christ and God as one person one time and as separate beings another? Well, Mormons believe that God and Jesus are separate beings, however they are one in purpose. Jesus always refers to himself as God because he follows God’s will exactly, his word is the same as God’s, his purpose is the same as God’s in that way you can say they are one, which he does. Seems kind of simple when you don’t use a bunch of fancy pseudo scientific jargon to spew a bunch of negative information about a religion which believes in and attempts to follow Christ’s teachings. Hard to believe that other “Christians” are so negative.

***Hard to believe that other “Christians” are so negative.***

We ‘other “Christians”’ are not the ones who started this fight back in 1820’s when a backwoods rube walked out of the woods and declared all other churches wrong and he had talked to God and seen angels and had found a gold book that only he could translate and if you didn’t believe every word HE said you would be sorry because HE would stand at the door of Heaven and keep everyone out who didn’t believe what HE said.

Whew!

Whew!

No one started a fight after all these years how dare the Lord start telling those who's allegiants to the Traditions of their fathers now be corrected by the Lord himself how intrusive of him!

Wow I pray not all will are so willing to kill God's messengers aka prophets!

***

Journal of Discourses, Vol. 8, p. 176: "Whosoever... does not confess that God has sent Joseph Smith, and revealed the everlasting Gospel to and through him, is of Antichrist...," Brigham Young Oh please not this again so you don't think it is Joseph Smith a prophet of Jesus Christ, I do!

This is a commandment from the Lord it is the same that any one who does not listen to His servant of the Lord be it Abraham, Moses, Isaiah, Joseph Smith

***

Journal of Discourses, Volume 7, page 289: "Joseph Smith holds the keys of this last dispensation, ... that no man or woman in this dispensation will ever enter into the celestial kingdom of God without the consent of Joseph Smith. From the day that the Priesthood was taken from the earth to the winding-up scene of all things, every man and woman must have the certificate of Joseph Smith,.. I cannot go there without his consent. He holds the keys of that kingdom for the last dispensation-the keys to rule in the spirit-world; and he rules there triumphantly, for he gained full power He reigns there as supreme a being in his sphere, capacity, and calling, as God does in heaven. Many will exclaim-"Oh, that is very disagreeable! It is preposterous! We cannot bear the thought!" But it is true" So there you have it again...JS is/has compared himself equal to God.

This is so silly and it shows that the mainstream haven't been taught by Traditions of men the ways of God.
When the Lord through his priesthood anoints one they are given especially the prophet to speak for God in other words to be the messenger.

I live around a bunch of people who believe the same thing except the last name is not Joseph Smith but E.G. White as their prophetess.

And I could point out a short wave radio preacher who claims to be “an old time prophet of God...

Self proclaimed “prophets” are a dime a dozen.

Will read later,
but the first lint seats the mood of the author by starting with the conclusion of “heretical teaching”.

Like the Apostle Paul. Miserable guy!

or that other guy...

Oh, Jesus!

Do you really think He was kept from being happy because
He was single?
