U.S. Nuns to Vatican: We support Fr. Roy Bourgeois--and women's ordination
Pontifications ^ | December 17, 2008 | David Gibson

Whether Maryknoll priest Fr. Roy Bourgeois has been excommunicated or not remains a mystery. As I wrote here, the Vatican told him to recant for supporting women's ordination--and attending one last July--and at last word he had gone to Rome to plead his cause.

Catholic World News and National Catholic Register think it's a done deal.

The blowback certainly hasn't died down, and today more than 100 nuns from 22 religious congregations released a letter to the Vatican protesting the threatened excommunication of Bourgeois. The letter was organized by the National Coalition of American Nuns (NCAN).

The nuns' statement said they "join Fr. Roy Bourgeois and the majority of U.S. Catholics, who believe that women are called to priestly ordination in the Catholic Church." They "look forward to the day when Catholic women, following in the footsteps of Mary Magdalene, who announced the Resurrection to the male Apostles, will minister as full equals in our church."

"In the first century, Christians resolved their disagreements about following traditions such as circumcision and kosher dietary laws by dialogue and discussion," said Sister Beth Rindler, in other comments released by NCAN. "We need to follow their example by promoting public discussion about the ordination of women," the Franciscan Sister said.

"We hope the excommunication is not issued," added Dominican Sister Donna Quinn, one of the coordinators of NCAN. "The medieval punishment of excommunication serves only to embarrass our Church in the eyes of the world and fuels further anger and resentment among the U.S. faithful."

So the RCC would rather have married priests

The Roman Catholic church already has married priests.

It seems to me that this would be a golden opportunity to rid the church of a hundred trouble-making heretics.

I don’t keep up with all these trouble-making nuns any more, but I see that Sr. Joan Chittister, OSB is on the list, and I take it that the others are similar.

The Church is going to go through difficult times as the economy continues to collapse, both in America and around the world. We don’t need to have our dwindling collection plates supporting heretics and others who spend all their time tearing the Church down from within.

...The medieval punishment of excommunication

Hey, they excommunicated people in the Renaissance too!

Women's ordination advocates are hypocrites unless they also support men who want to become nuns.

Enough with the jokes. If these nuns spent their energies in prayer and evangelization instead of in media-hogging opposition to the Pope, the Catholic Church would be in much better spiritual shape.

Whatever happened to obedience?
The Pope can’t change the rules. Like most people, those women need to find another church that fits their beliefs. But then they would worship themselves.

Perhaps they couldn’t afford a copy of the catechism?

I was pleasantly surpised not to see the name of our former nun but she thinks womyn would make better priests.

I say excommunicate the nuns too, we don’t need them teaching error.

It isn’t tax free, the rectory and in the case of the Catholic church, food, gas, utilities, health insurance, car allowance are non-taxable but the actual salary and any stipends they make are taxable. Check out the IRS site.

I’ll bet the average age of that list is about 65. This won’t be a problem anymore in 20 years.

I will bet a dollar to a doughnut that women will be ordained in the Catholic Church in the next 20 years.

I'll take that bet and give you 10-1 odds.

From what I've read, if the Church doesn't ordain women, who are they going to ordain?

Oh, I don't know. Perhaps the faithful Catholic men that seminaries have been turning away for the past 40 years? Read Goodbye, Good Men and get back to me, will you?

This has probably been the case since 33AD. So? The problem is clericalism, Many nuns thinks of the hierarchy as a political structure and as bishops would act accordingly, like the presiding bishop of the Episcopal Church. The church has suffered greatly from priests who are misplaced politicians. We don’t need a new species of them.

The Church has the Awful Warning of the Episcopalians right in front of her eyes. I don't think the Holy Father wants any of what these foolish virgins are selling.

Thse women are power-hungry. I discovered that people with liberal views promote a sort of soft tyranny. They don't"excommunicate," they EXCLUDE , by denying people with differing fews from having a role. That's why so many university faculties have only the token conservatives.

Guys, like I said, nuns in pantsuits. Why anyone in his or her right mind would want a reunion with the Roman Church right now is beyond me

Confused sexuality can lead to confused conceptually too. If you are a woman and you think you are a man it seems "unfair" that you can't do what other men do! But apparently God didn't think so when he created women with a womb capable of bearing children. Was that "unfair" too? God's justice isn't our justice, but some people think otherwise, and when the same people call on God as their witness, what are they thinking?!

The other question is how prevalent is this among American nuns and Catholic women at large? One hundred nuns may seem like a huge number, but considering there are 59,208 Nuns in the US* (CARA) in 2008, such a number is rather insignificant (0.16%), although the perceptions drop of American nuns is characteristic of something.
_____
*compared to 179,954 in 1965, 135,225 in 1975, 115,386 in 1985, 90,809 in 1995, 79,814 in 2000, and 68,634 in 2005

I honestly would not be surprised if one day someone nails 95 theses on one of the Catholic church's doors in America and ushers New Reformation that will give birth to the American Catholic "Church."

My biggest enigma is why are they not seeking ordination in Protestant communities? Surely they must think theirh theology is "correct." What are these "nuns" doing in the Catholic Church if not solely for the purpose of destroying it?
