Obama speech will try to defuse race issue

...

The Obama campaign said the speech in Philadelphia will address "race, politics, and how we bring our country together at this important moment in our history".

It comes after a week in which he has taken a battering from Hillary Clinton's campaign team, particularly over incendiary remarks by his pastor about the US and discrimination.

In interviews last night previewing today's speech, Obama described as "stupid" remarks about the US and whites by the preacher at his church in Chicago, the Reverend Jeremiah Wright, and admitted that the focus on race over the last week had been "a distraction".

...

Constant replays on US television of Wright shouting "God damn America" and railing about discrimination against blacks risk alienating some white voters.

A Rasmussen poll published yesterday said Wright's comments made 56% of the electorate less likely to vote for Obama...

In an interview with Jim Lehrer's Newshour last night, Obama portrayed Wright as a product of the 1960s and 1970s and Ferraro as a similar product of the feminist battles of the same era, but called on America to move on.

...

Obama rarely spoke about race last year as his campaign team tried to present him as a candidate that transcends race. But he has positioned himself as a champion of black rights, an heir to the mantle of the Reverend Martin Luther King, in a speech last year and again in Atlanta in January on Martin Luther King day. He has also criticised those sections of the black community where anti-semitism and anti-homosexuality were rife.

Obama's speech today will partially defend his pastor is going to blame his speech upon the culture of the black churches in America, i.e., black churches speak hate speech not only toward whites but America itself. We are supposed to understand his pastor's speech because it is part of the institutionalized racism of black churches.

Wright hates white people.

Obama hates white people.

Obama’s wife really hates white people.

I can’t say much good about McCain, but he doesn’t seem to want to rid the world of white people like those mentioned above.

If there isn't huge warning signals going off about this guy in America we're in deeper trouble than we know.

First being sent to madrassa, in the Middle East, as a child(Good standard western hate education).

Now as an adult he comes from a hate filled church...

Put these two hate filled ideas together and ask what happened to the idea of loving your country? It isn't in Obama’s heart.

Admitted it was a distraction?

No.

Trying to claim it is a distraction.

It's not a distraction.

It's central. It's key.

Indeed it is central to his campaign. As questions continue to be raised over his religion(s) and his commitment to the United States.

I like this line from the Corner by Jonah Goldberg:

“If John McCain had spent twenty years hanging with Pat Robertson, describing him as his mentor, attending Robertson’s church, having his kids baptized by Robertson, having Robertson officiate at his wedding, giving him the inspiration for the title of his career-making autobiography, collaborating with him in political organizing, and then tried to dismiss criticism by calling Robertson his lovable uncle who sometimes goes too far, there is no way on God’s green earth Yglesias or his crowd would call this “trumped up.”

Hmmm. Sounds like after the Civil War except the political Parties have changed.

Obama will either win or lose the Presidency today. If he gives a MLK’esque speech the myrmidons will vote for him in droves. If he spins and obfuscates, he loses. Simple as that.

Why, I wonder, is this speech being billed as a “major speech”? Sounds like he’s already been elected. It will be full of the emptiness that defines all his previous speeches which I suppose were all “major” as well.
