Mormonism increasingly draws Spanish-speakers as converts
Arizona Daily Star ^ | March 8, 2008 | Stephanie Innes

Spanish-speakers are fueling growth in the local Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which recently opened new worship space on Tucson's predominantly Hispanic South Side.

Many local Mormon worshippers, like 47-year-old Juan Arroyo, converted to the faith from Catholicism while living in their native countries. Arroyo, a roofer who has four children, joined the church when he lived in Guadalajara, Mexico. He's been in the United States for seven years.

"I was missing something, and my life changed greatly after meeting the missionaries," he said in Spanish.

Nationally, the number of Spanish-speaking congregations in the Mormon church grew by 64 percent between 2000 and 2006. There are 639 such congregations in the United States.

The church is growing quickly in Mexico.

Church officials say its presence there began in 1875 when Brigham Young, then denomination president, called on six missionaries from Salt Lake City to bring Spanish-language materials about the church to Mexico. In 1885, a group of nearly 400 colonists from Utah arrived at northern Mexico's Casas Grandes River. Mexico's first stake was created in Colonia Juárez in 1895. By 1912, more than 4,000 members had settled in Chihuahua and Sonora.

More than 1 million members now live in Mexico, a predominantly Catholic country with a population of about 108 million.

Likewise...

It's not scripture to me, but it was to Joseph Smith, who lifted unashamedly from the King James Version of the Bible. That's what men, women, children and dogs call plagiarism.

51 Verily, I say unto you: A commandment I give unto mine handmaid, Emma Smith, your wife, whom I have given unto you, that she stay herself and partake not of that which I commanded you to offer unto her; for I did it, saith the Lord, to aprove you all, as I did Abraham, and that I might require an offering at your hand, by covenant and sacrifice.
52 And let mine handmaid, Emma Smith, areceive all those that have been given unto my servant Joseph, and who are virtuous and pure before me; and those who are not pure, and have said they were pure, shall be destroyed, saith the Lord God.
53 For I am the Lord thy God, and ye shall obey my voice; and I give unto my servant Joseph that he shall be made ruler over many things; for he hath been afaithful over a few things, and from henceforth I will strengthen him.
54 And I command mine handmaid, Emma Smith, to abide and acleave unto my servant Joseph, and to none else. But if she will not abide this commandment she shall be bdestroyed, saith the Lord; for I am the Lord thy God, and will destroy her if she abide not in my law.
55 But if she will not abide this commandment, then shall my servant Joseph do all things for her, even as he hath said; and I will bless him and multiply him and give unto him an ahundredfold in this world, of fathers and mothers, brothers and sisters, houses and lands, wives and children, and crowns of beternal lives in the eternal worlds.
56 And again, verily I say, let mine handmaid aforgive my servant Joseph his trespasses; and then shall she be forgiven her trespasses, wherein she has trespassed against me; and I, the Lord thy God, will bless her, and multiply her, and make her heart to brejoice

Eliza was a devout Mormon. At age 38, she became Joseph Smith's 14th plural wife (in addition to Smith's lawful wife, Emma).
In 1842, after learning Eliza was pregnant, Emma Smith beat Eliza with a broomstick and knocked her down a flight of stairs, causing Eliza to miscarry Smith's baby.

Wow!!

I guess ol' Emma got VAPORIZED by GOD!!!

Don’t try to read into that what’s not meant.

We usually 'read' EXACTLY what is typed: like when the BoM and the Bible BOTH warn against having more than one wife; yet your Founder and past leaders IGNORED what was written there.

We can READ it and easily see this.

"Don’t try to read into that what’s not meant." is the tactics of FAIRLDS and their ilk.

THE

DOCTRINE AND COVENANTS

OF THE CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER-DAY SAINTS

SECTION 71

Revelation given to Joseph Smith the Prophet and Sidney Rigdon, at Hiram, Ohio, December 1, 1831. HC 1: 238–239. The Prophet had continued to translate the Bible with Sidney Rigdon as his scribe until this revelation was received, at which time it was temporarily laid aside so as to enable them to fulfill the instruction given herein. The brethren were to go forth to preach in order to allay the unfriendly feelings that had developed against the Church as a result of the publication of some newspaper articles by Ezra Booth, who had apostatized.

1–4, Joseph Smith and Sidney Rigdon are sent forth to proclaim the gospel; 5–11, Enemies of the saints shall be confounded.

1 Behold, thus saith the Lord unto you my servants Joseph Smith, Jun., and Sidney Rigdon, that the time has verily come that it is necessary and expedient in me that you should open your mouths in proclaiming my gospel, the things of the kingdom, expounding the mysteries thereof out of the scriptures, according to that portion of Spirit and power which shall be given unto you, even as I will.

2 Verily I say unto you, proclaim unto the world in the regions round about, and in the church also, for the space of a season, even until it shall be made known unto you.

3 Verily this is a mission for a season, which I give unto you.

4 Wherefore, labor ye in my vineyard. Call upon the inhabitants of the earth, and bear record, and prepare the way for the commandments and revelations which are to come.

5 Now, behold this is wisdom; whoso readeth, let him understand and receive also;

6 For unto him that receiveth it shall be given more abundantly, even power.

7 Wherefore, confound your enemies; call upon them to meet you both in public and in private; and inasmuch as ye are faithful their shame shall be made manifest.

8 Wherefore, let them bring forth their strong reasons against the Lord.

9 Verily, thus saith the Lord unto you—there is no weapon that is formed against you shall prosper;

10 And if any man lift his voice against you he shall be confounded in mine own due time.

11 Wherefore, keep my commandments; they are true and faithful. Even so. Amen.

1. Polygamous marriages drain taxpayer dollars
Why should Canadian laws sanction an institution that enslaves women. . . ?
Susan Martinuk, Calgary Herald
Published: Friday, February 15, 2008
It was a rude awakening for British and Canadian taxpayers when news emerged this week to confirm that their tax dollars were being used to support polygamous marriages.

After all, polygamy is not only morally objectionable to the majority of citizens in both countries, it’s illegal. Despite the current tendency to naively legalize any and all family arrangements, Canadian and British laws still call for polygamists to be punished by prison sentences of up to five and seven years, respectively.

So the question is obvious: If the laws call for a visit to the Ol’ Grey Bar Hotel, why are we paying polygamists social benefits?

British legislation from 2003 opened the door to the current situation by allowing multiple wives to inherit assets from a deceased husband. More recently, the government investigated claims that polygamists were taking advantage of the welfare system. It should have led to fines and legal crackdowns on abusers; instead it led to the creation of a new set of rules that allow polygamists to claim welfare benefits for more than one wife.

The government obviously wasn’t that proud of its innovative actions, since it acted quietly and without public consultation in agreeing to pay polygamists subsidies for additional housing and to grant additional tax benefits. Worse still, all payments bypass the wives and are given directly to the husband.

British citizens only found out about these changes when a newspaper broke the story last week.

At the same time, Canadian Muslim leaders admitted that hundreds of Muslim men in Ontario are now claiming welfare and social benefits for their multiple wives. This is welfare fraud. The system is supposed to prevent applicants from claiming welfare for more than one spouse, but the fraud works because they don’t check for independent applications from multiple spouses in the same household.

Under Muslim (Sharia) law, men are permitted to have up to four wives. If the paperwork is handled properly, that can put taxpayers on the hook for a huge monthly payment of social benefits.

Tolerating other cultural practices that are contrary to Canadian values is one thing. Supporting them with our tax dollars is quite another.

The problem in Britain stems from an initial choice to recognize polygamous marriages conducted in jurisdictions outside the country that allow polygamy. The problem in Ontario is that the Ontario Family Law Act actually recognizes multiple spouses from polygamist marriages, providing they were legally married in a country that supports polygamy.

Wives in polygamist marriages are recognized as spouses under the Ontario Family Law Act, providing the marriage was “celebrated in a jurisdiction whose system of law recognizes it as valid.”

In any other situation, a bigamist would be prosecuted. But thanks to our far-sighted and open-minded legislators who thought changing the definition of spouse wouldn’t matter, any attempts to stop the welfare fraud could lead to the full recognition of, and support for, polygamy.

YES! How can ONE God have TWO bodies?

For my next trick, I will make a two headed apostle. Better yet, a 12 headed creature with 24 arms and legs, 240 fingers and toes with 12 noses.

John 17:

21 That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me.

22 And the glory which thou gavest me I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one:

Your definition would have me create a monster Apostle. Are you starting to see how this works?

Let me get this straight... when ancient apostles quote more ancient prophets, it's quoting scripture, because the God is the same, and His message is the same. But when other ancient prophets quote important texts from the scriptures they had with them, it's plagiarism.

I see how it works...

***

If you were reading that from a Christian point of view which you claim to be you see that is for those who fight against Jesus Christ and his Kingdom.

The LDS do not fight against God Kingdom but a few of you try to turn the table to make it look like the LDS are opposition to Lord’s covenants,, when who is it that really scoffs at the Lord’s commandments or covenants and mocks and make fun at his followers?

Children like you are still reading Commic Book version the Lord has up graded and added many new volumes to his work!

It's not scripture to me, but it was to Jude, who quoted from Enoch's prophesies. That's what men of God call prophesies.

Still challenged by the context of the passage 7? Was this a true 'prophecy'? Let us look further.

2 Timothy 3:16

If the passage quoted by Jude was scripture I would have to agree with you, but as we will see, it falls short

Enoch was one of the most righteous men to ever walk this earth. That they had and quoted from him thousands of years later is indeed a gift from God.

It is apparent from this statement that you believe that 1 Enoch is an origional ms from Enoch. So too is your understanding of intertestamental writings. The pseudepigraphical Book of Enoch is are actually anonymous, not having been written by Enoch. Secondly, the context of the component (minus Similitudes) are linked to the Maccabbean period of Israel (300-100BC), not 4000 BC. Text and papyrial evidence supports the knowledge that 1 Enoch wasn't started earlier than 300 BC - and it was not a single work but a composite work by multiple authors until final redaction in the late 1st to mid 2d century AD (when Similitudes was added). Internal examination of Enoch sees that it pulls from existing OT scripture - not vice versa if it was older. Since 1 Enoch was not written by Enoch in the first place, it could not be a prophecy in the fundamental meaning of the word.

One of the main authorities on OT pseudox argues that much of the attribution of later writers to earlier, famous figures was due to the "the pervasive contention that prophecy had ceased" (Charlesworth, ABD, s.v. "PSEUDONYMITY AND PSEUDEPIGRAPHY"). In other words, since there could be no new revelation, all claims to new revelation must be put into the mouths of 'old' revealers (such as Enoch or Ezra). This fills the intertestamental period description.

When Anti-Nicean authors, or the NT author Jude, refers to a number of extra-biblical facts, or Paul refers to Jannes and Jambres, they never refer to the sources as 'scripture' but merely select out of a large mass of extra-biblical facts, a tiny subject or a couple of details that helped them make their point. Again, this doesn't mean that they considered those sources to be inspired (any more than Paul considered the Stoic poets that he quoted to be inspired!), but that they considered those selected facts to be relevant.

It is wishful thinking that these are the words of Enoch, truth is they are not
