Childish behavior |

They're called the "Lost Boys," the teenagers kicked out of their homes and communities by leaders of the polygamist Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints to ensure there's an ample supply of single, young women who will one day become plural wives. Representative Lorie Fowlke (R-Orem), is running a bill to make this abandonment a felony.
"Estimates are that we've had more than 1,000 children - primarily in southern Utah - thrown out of their homes," Fowlke says. "What we were trying to do with this bill is criminalize this behavior and send a message to this community that they can't just throw away their children."
H.B. 23 adds child abandonment to the definition of child abuse, and makes it a felony crime. It also adds an enhancement if a parent or organization benefits from the child's abandonment to further an illegal enterprise, such as polygamy. This is the case with the FLDS church, says Roger Hoole, a lawyer who represents some of the displaced young men and sits on the board for the Utah Association for Justice. He says the church benefits from kicking out young men who would compete for plural wives. This, he says, has devastating consequences.
"There's a huge impact that's coming, like a tsunami, that's going to hit the state of Utah, when these boys get a little older and realize what has happened to them and get angry," Hoole says. "There's a real problem here."
Fowlke's bill gained unanimous support in a Senate committee this morning, and now heads to the full Senate for consideration.
I am watching this thread closely because it is borderline hate mongering to smear a whole belief based on the behavior of a few, e.g. Baptists and Phelps.
If the conversation returns to FLDS proper, it should be academic only.
P-M, Are you going to accuse Abraham, Jacob, Moses and many other Old Testament Prophets of being polygamists? You go way back into church history and dig up some old news. I could do the same to the Baptists - you know, the snakes and all, not to mention the KKK.
Religion Moderator - See what I mean? I call someone a “clown” because of their ignorant statement about my beloved Church but you allow some people to spew such hateful nonsense about my Church.
Whatever. I’m going to bed. I should never have come here. When will I ever learn?
First, I apologize. I was trying to be light hearted about a serious situation. I see how could think I was being unkind and promise I did not mean it to be so.
My post was also self referential since I had entered just a short while before responding to an early post when the others were engaging in thread drift.
BTW, I agree with you about this cult. (#451)
This was my first post in the thread.
>>There are extremist cults as off shoots of just about any religion. My family is all Baptist but to be fair, many cross burners and lynchers have claimed to be Baptists and good Christians.
Besides, this isnt adult polygamy we are talking about - these are cults that force underage girls - thats very different than a society where an adult man can marry a second adult wife if the first adult wife consents.<<
>>The main reason is that I dont feel called by God to join.
The Mormons say that If you are sincere in your prayer, that God will give you a burning in your bosom and you’ll know the truth of the book of Mormon and then you will have a testimony that Mormonism is the one true church on the face of the earth.
Have you tried it?
What’s stopping you?<<
This is quite an interesting tactic you are employing. I will leave it to the mods to judge intent.
But your words are cynical and full of pain. I hope that you find relief from that pain.
Old Testament, by definition, isn't Christian. They were Jews. I believe it's been addressed on the thread that any group of people who do things that are contrary to what Christ said Christians are to do are either: not Christian, by definition, or are rebelling/rejecting what He would have them do. And to that extent, they are roundly criticized and/or mocked (I've seen on many threads) for doing so.
Yes. They were. And, IIRC, the Book of Mormon condemned them for it.
You go way back into church history and dig up some old news.
When you go back 100 years in Christian history you are still in the Modern Era. I sometimes post 200 year old sermons because they are relevant to today.
Do you not stand up at church once a month and give testimony that some guy who lived almost 200 years ago was a true prophet of God and that some Book that he translated nearly 200 years ago is true?
These FLDS practitioners are living today and practicing Mormonism as it was practiced only 100 years ago. That is not a long time.
I could do the same to the Baptists - you know, the snakes and all, not to mention the KKK.
You just did, didn't you? :-)
Frankly, I could care less. I will freely condemn any Baptist who would supports the KKK and FWIW, I don't think Baptists are snake handlers. Those churches always have really weird names.
Religion Moderator - See what I mean? I call someone a clown because of their ignorant statement about my beloved Church but you allow some people to spew such hateful nonsense about my Church.
Are you calling me a clown? I don't really care, but I can say that I am not making "ignorant statements" about your church. I was born and raised a 5th Generation Mormon. I think I know quite a bit about the LDS Church. I would venture to guess that I might know more than you do about the LDS Church. Maybe, maybe not.
I am not offended by plural marriage under the sanction of the Lord.
Because the purpose of Marriage is about being children into the world.
As I see it the Lord was in the restoration mode and that the LDS were few and the Lord wanted to replenish the earth with is anointed to bring into the earth might souls to continue and establish a firm foundation.
You can PM have all the earthly thoughts you want but I am thankful and it has strengthen the Church.
What the FLDS have done was to mock the Lords ordinance something that was never given to the organization but brought confusion among the weak minded who lack critical thinking.
Pretty much the way folks are over Obama they don’t know why they like him they just do!
Those who dislike the LDS many times lack critical thinking and have no interest in seperating fact from fiction about the LDS!
Some will come along after my post and try to turn my words on me and the scripture have warn about those kind of wicked souls too!
Well I don't think anyone on this forum would ever do that.
There are no "wicked souls" here, are there?
“I could do the same to the Baptists - you know, the snakes and all,
I thought snake handling was Pentecostal.
I thought snake handling was Pentecostal.

I thought it was a restored church thingy...
I don’t know, but it wasn’t the Baptists, (I’m pretty sure).
And it’s not the Pentecostals...
Well...according to this, though, it is:
Snake handling is a religious ritual in a small number of pentecostal churches in the U.S., usually characterized as rural and Holiness. Practitioners believe it dates to antiquity and quote the Book of Mark and the Book of Luke to support the practice

Yeah, well
:)
I’m an Indiana Jones
I hate snakes...
:)
Well, at least it’s scriptural. : )
And these signs shall follow them that believe: In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues. They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.
Mark 16:17-18
Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you.
Luke 10:19
It is probably a small number of churches, in a small region.
For awhile I drove from Olympia, Washington to Portland, Oregon to attend a Pentecostal church, and they sure weren’t doing it.
:)
I have a very large boa....I guess you wouldn’t like it much, then.
: )
