How Mormons Saw Romney -- In wooing evangelicals, he made some fellow LDS members uneasy
Newsweek ^ | February 8, 2008 | Sally Atkinson

Posted on 02/19/2008 4:46:10 PM PST by Zakeet

In his pursuit of the presidency, Mitt Romney held fast to his Mormon faith, though his religion remains controversial with evangelicals and some other Christians. But his determined (and ultimately futile) wooing of evangelicals led him to make some statements that didn't quite square with Mormon beliefs and culture. And the effort itself may have deepened the impression of him as inauthentic—even to some fellow Mormons.

Early in his presidential bid, Romney was asked what he thought of polygamy. Prompted by what they considered a divine revelation, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints discontinued the practice more than a century ago, and the church distances itself from polygamist "fundamentalists." But Romney went one step further, saying he couldn't "imagine anything more awful than polygamy." Many Mormons were privately taken aback. Mormons believe that, in its time, "plural marriage" was a commandment from God, and they are, as a group, fiercely proud of their ancestors, hundreds of whom practiced polygamy. (Romney's own great-grandfather had five wives.) LDS church members loathe the polygamy stereotypes and jokes bandied by outsiders. But hearing Romney—the most recognizable face of their faith these days—disavow it in those terms was mildly unsettling to LDS insiders.

Others were puzzled to hear Romney say he reads the Gideon Bible—a version popular with evangelicals: Mormons uniformly study the King James version, in a Salt Lake edition that is cross-referenced to all other Mormon scripture. "Seems like he just figured he had to say the safest, most Protestant thing he could think of—that was kind of annoying," says Russell Arben Fox, a Mormon professor of political science at Friends University in Wichita, Kans.

yes, they did address them, you refuse to listen. You like to think you understand our beliefs, you clearly don’t. Don’t put doctrines in our hearts and minds.

At least we agree on most of that. Though, i would support Huck or Romney if it came down to either one of them or Obama or Hillary.

lol. Glad there's something of agreement. My problem with voting for those who aren't conservative any longer is that's exactly why this country's in the mess we're in. It keeps moving left, left, left, left, with every election. I'm all done with moving left.

I see us moving that way too. Though, I don’t know how to stop it. On Nov 5, I have to make a choice. Its going to be tough.

I Said: So the one " "voted in" 325 years later in Nicea" is the Christ of the mainstream Christian Denominations that your Prophet doesn't believe in?

U Said: Jesus was never "voted in", he is the same yesterday, tomorrow and forever.

Jesus never changed, but the Trinity which can be shown to be a change to what was believed since apostolic times was a change to the Definition of who Jesus is. All this stupid bickering back and forth (both sides and me sometimes) is all about the Trinity, all the crap about Joseph smith that gets churned up here is because he dared to say the Trinity was wrong and that is what this all boils down to. If he had started a church, that practiced polygamy as many did in that day and age it would not be a big deal today. If he had just started another Protestant Church we would be lost in the Mix, but he didn't do that, did he.

U Said: You do realize he said what I quoted a few years ago, so you still believe this:
And the angel of God said unto me: Behold there are save two churches only; the one is the church of the Lamb of God, and the other is the church of the devil; wherefore, whoso belongeth not to the church of the Lamb of God belongeth to that great church, which is the mother of abominations; and she is the whore of all the earth. And it came to pass that I looked and beheld the whore of all the earth, and she sat upon many waters; and she had dominion over all the earth, among all nations, kindreds, tongues, and people. – Book of Mormon, 1 Nephi 14:10-11
So you agree with the Book of Mormon that there were absolutely no Christians on earth when Joseph Smith got his "revelation?"

There were most certainly Christians on the earth. His church (authority) was not here. His teachings had been perverted (like the Trinity heresy), but there were Good people doing their best to find God anyway, what do you think the Protestant movement was all about?

U Said: You don't understand that the Church of God, the Bible and Jesus Christ is composed of everyone that has made the Biblical commitment to Jesus, his teachings and follows them?

I believe I understand, I believe that you believe you understand. None of that really matters, what matters is which one of us does God believe understands? I have prayed and received an answer that meets the Biblical requirement, I'm going with God's advice on this one.

U Said: Again, do you believe the above quote from the BOM and write off all Christians except those of the Mormon church?

It really does not matter who I "Write off" or "Write Up" or Write Down" I am but a man. Jesus will judge, and I will condemn no man. It is sad that the perverted doctrines that are taught actually interfere with the receiving of revelation so that many on your side actually teach that a prayer to God will be answered by Satan. Such teachings only serve to separate men from God which is the exact opposite of what God's Church is supposed to be doing, thus it has become perverted and is a tool of the Devil.

You can argue all you want, but I have had people tell me my prayers to God were answered by Satan on this forum, and so this is my opinion of what they have been taught and are teaching others.

It matters. If you sit home, they can spin it however they want to...and the party will still move left on “spin.” IMHO, if people vote McRino, it’ll be spinning it as if he’s a “conservative” with a “mandate” for McShamnesty, among other things, much as he’s already being called a “conservative” in the media. And then we’ll continue to move left on that “spin.”

I recommend: vote conservative.

Rest assured that I won’t sit home. I just haven’t made up my mind on how to vote. I can do what you are doing, but what I was saying is that McCain is a lock in my state, so maybe its not much of a decision after all. McCain will win my state and I can still write in “conservative.”
