How Mormons Saw Romney -- In wooing evangelicals, he made some fellow LDS members uneasy
Newsweek ^ | February 8, 2008 | Sally Atkinson

Posted on 02/19/2008 4:46:10 PM PST by Zakeet

In his pursuit of the presidency, Mitt Romney held fast to his Mormon faith, though his religion remains controversial with evangelicals and some other Christians. But his determined (and ultimately futile) wooing of evangelicals led him to make some statements that didn't quite square with Mormon beliefs and culture. And the effort itself may have deepened the impression of him as inauthentic—even to some fellow Mormons.

Early in his presidential bid, Romney was asked what he thought of polygamy. Prompted by what they considered a divine revelation, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints discontinued the practice more than a century ago, and the church distances itself from polygamist "fundamentalists." But Romney went one step further, saying he couldn't "imagine anything more awful than polygamy." Many Mormons were privately taken aback. Mormons believe that, in its time, "plural marriage" was a commandment from God, and they are, as a group, fiercely proud of their ancestors, hundreds of whom practiced polygamy. (Romney's own great-grandfather had five wives.) LDS church members loathe the polygamy stereotypes and jokes bandied by outsiders. But hearing Romney—the most recognizable face of their faith these days—disavow it in those terms was mildly unsettling to LDS insiders.

Others were puzzled to hear Romney say he reads the Gideon Bible—a version popular with evangelicals: Mormons uniformly study the King James version, in a Salt Lake edition that is cross-referenced to all other Mormon scripture. "Seems like he just figured he had to say the safest, most Protestant thing he could think of—that was kind of annoying," says Russell Arben Fox, a Mormon professor of political science at Friends University in Wichita, Kans.

Show me in the BoM where it says if you interpret the Bible to mean Trinity you are a heretic doomed to the lowest depths.

The Book of Mormon actually teaches the Trinity. The LDS church denies the Trinity.

So do you believe your Book of Mormon, or do you believe your Church?

You sound like Thomas:

John 20:24-27
24. Now Thomas (called Didymus), one of the Twelve, was not with the disciples when Jesus came.
25. So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord!” But he said to them, “Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe it.”
26. A week later his disciples were in the house again, and Thomas was with them. Though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!”
27. Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe.”

That's strange..........I don't see ANY "stories" that Zakeet posted that weren't cited by sources/links, etc.

Zakeet's posting history

At best....after tracing down when you began to claim "stories without evidence" were being posted came after this post #257, however, that has links/evidence to back up the "stories."

I would like to learn from my mistake(s) and publicly issue the appropriate apologies and retraction(s).

Obviously, you provided no chain-of-custody documentation.

I don’t think you will find many people here who are sincerely interested in a respectful discussion about religion. At least that’s not my experience. The ones who hop on any thread about Mormonism and Mitt are motivated by malice, nothing more. They have a visceral hatred of Mormonism that oozed to the surface when Mitt began looking like a viable candidate. I’m not sure that it does any good to engage in discussion with them. Pearls/swine.

For 170 years, people who are smarter than them have cast aspersions on our church. When that didn’t work, they got violent. But, we have continued to grow.

John was the best friend of Jesus, and trusted by Jesus to receive the Revelation and yet you dont believe the words of John about the Trinity...1 John 5:1-12

The word Trinity is an addition to the Gospel, aren’t you guys the ones who Quote Rev. 22: 18
18 For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book:
You guys love to quote this to us all the Time about the Book of Mormon, if you are right, then it applies to the Trinity as well.
__________________________________________________

DU, I said...

you dont believe the words of John ABOUT the Trinity...1 John 5:7

Granted, John never used the word Trinity, but he did describe a TRIUNE God...

God the Father, the Son and the Holy spirit...

Learned men 300 years later decided to call the concept ...Trinity...

Do you believe that God is Triune as described by John in 1 John 5:7 ???

Remember that same John said

“And there are also manyh other other things that Jesus did, the which, if they should be written every one, I suppose that even the worlditself could not contain the books thaty should be written. Amen ..John 21:25

Somehow John knew that God was Triune...He spent more time with Jesus than the others and Jesus told him things that the others were not told...

When John spoke of the “Trinity” he was speaking by the Holy Spirit and he also could report what Jesus had told him ...

here is a suggestion: actually read my posts and stop misrepresenting points and building stawmen arguments. Try to actually think and engage others.

Are you one of Ballard's Buddies? He had some advice.

15 December 2007 The following transcript of Elder M. Russell Ballard’s speech given at Brigham Young University-Hawaii’s graduation ceremony on 15 December 2007.

Every disciple of Christ will be most effective, and do the most good by adopting a demeanor worthy of a follower of the Savior of the world. Discussions focused on questioning, debating and doubting gospel principles do little to build the kingdom of God. The Apostle Paul has admonished us to not be "ashamed of the gospel of Jesus Christ: for it is the power of God unto Salvation" (Romans 1:16). Let us all stand firmly and speak with faith in sharing our message with the world. Many of you are returned missionaries and can carry on meaningful conversation in the language you learned on your mission. Your outreach can be international.

As you participate in this conversation and utilize the tools of New Media, remember who you are—you are Latter-day Saints. Remember as the Proverb states that “a soft answer turneth away wrath: but grievous words stir up anger” (Proverbs 15:1). And remember that “contention is of the devil.” There is no need to argue or contend with others regarding our beliefs. There is no need to become defensive or belligerent.

Using New Media to Support the Work of the Church

I like your creative interpretations, but they are in fact not correct, or at least not those of the mormon faithful. That those professors were corrupt, not the people believing in Christ. There certainly have been many corrupt church leaders through history. Just because religions are wrong because they do not have all truths that were lost during the last 2000 years or so, does not mean that those belonging to that church will not be saved by christ or that they will be damned to some sort of hell. How did you come to this conclusion?

Oh? James first asks, “What doth it profit, my brethren, though a man say he hath faith, and hav enot works? can faith save him?

What you are missing is intent.

Can SAYING you've got 'faith' save you?

Works are PROOF of faith.

"These things will accomply those who believe."

James 2:17
In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.

Hebrews 6:9
Even though we speak like this, dear friends, we are confident of better things in your case--things that accompany salvation.

lolol

The truth of the matter is that manner people were turned off by all the crap that we were “Mormon haters” because we called Romney a faux conservative. It doesn’t matter that we did and still continue to post the same way concerning McShamnesty, or even Huckabee. Nope, on Romney threads it was ONLY because we were ONLY “Mormon haters.” The bulk of this came from Mormons, I noticed.

Well...I had to find out what’s wrong with people who went to no end defending a fake conservative. I found out that a fake prophet is continually defended as well. Now I understand.

But, I still wouldn’t vote for Romney, and it has NOTHING to do with his religion. It’s because HE’S A FAKE CONSERVATIVE. His own actions and policies and judicial appointments prove that he’s a liberal.

That those professors were corrupt, not the people believing in Christ.

Sorry; but you ain't gonna GET 'believers' if the Professors are bad!

...because they do not have all truths that were lost during the last 2000 years or so...

WAIT a gol darned MINUTE here!

You won't accept any thing that's agin' Mormonism without 'proof', so just WHERE is your PROOF that this statement you've just made is TRUE?

By their fruits ye shall know them. The same people who condemned Romney — usually distorting and exaggerating his prior positions — were quick to forgive Thompson, for example, for his support of McCain Feingold. Or Huckabee, for his flip-flops on numerous topics, such as immigration.

The visceral opposition to Romney could not have been based on anything other than religious bigotry. That has been apparent to most honest observers. The ones who deny it here the loudest are usually the ones who were the quickest to hop on to any thread to condemn Mormonism in the ugliest terms.

How did you come to this conclusion?

I guess you failed to read your Scripture...

1 Nephi 14:9-10.

And it came to pass that he said unto me: Look, and behold that great and abominable church, which is the mother of abominations, whose founder is the devil. And he said unto me: Behold there are save two churches only; the one is the church of the Lamb of God, and the other is the church of the devil; wherefore, whoso belongeth not to the church of the Lamb of God belongeth to that great church, which is the mother of abominations; and she is the whore of all the earth.

This passage sets up a division between the two churches, making it plain that one must belong to one or the other.

So if you don't think it matters that Joseph Smith was a fraud then by all means let your bosom be warmed by thoughts of him. If you are putting your faith in the arm of flesh, then ultimately more than just your bosom will be heated up.

LOL!
