How Mormons Saw Romney -- In wooing evangelicals, he made some fellow LDS members uneasy
Newsweek ^ | February 8, 2008 | Sally Atkinson

Posted on 02/19/2008 4:46:10 PM PST by Zakeet

In his pursuit of the presidency, Mitt Romney held fast to his Mormon faith, though his religion remains controversial with evangelicals and some other Christians. But his determined (and ultimately futile) wooing of evangelicals led him to make some statements that didn't quite square with Mormon beliefs and culture. And the effort itself may have deepened the impression of him as inauthentic—even to some fellow Mormons.

Early in his presidential bid, Romney was asked what he thought of polygamy. Prompted by what they considered a divine revelation, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints discontinued the practice more than a century ago, and the church distances itself from polygamist "fundamentalists." But Romney went one step further, saying he couldn't "imagine anything more awful than polygamy." Many Mormons were privately taken aback. Mormons believe that, in its time, "plural marriage" was a commandment from God, and they are, as a group, fiercely proud of their ancestors, hundreds of whom practiced polygamy. (Romney's own great-grandfather had five wives.) LDS church members loathe the polygamy stereotypes and jokes bandied by outsiders. But hearing Romney—the most recognizable face of their faith these days—disavow it in those terms was mildly unsettling to LDS insiders.

Others were puzzled to hear Romney say he reads the Gideon Bible—a version popular with evangelicals: Mormons uniformly study the King James version, in a Salt Lake edition that is cross-referenced to all other Mormon scripture. "Seems like he just figured he had to say the safest, most Protestant thing he could think of—that was kind of annoying," says Russell Arben Fox, a Mormon professor of political science at Friends University in Wichita, Kans.

LOL!!...you have no idea what I know.

When did I quote something from 150 yrs ago?

Besides that....does quoting from 150 yrs ago negate it's truth? Mormon's have this habit of moving the target...whenever it seems to please them. How many changes have there been to, as you say the "official teachings of my church"?

Heck, there was a poster here on FR...that said he was only subject to the mormon doctrine that he believed in. What's up with that? Is that your tact also?

What you probably believe and what the teachings/origins of your church are, are more than likely worlds apart. You aren't alone.

You are a member of a church that's caught between trying like mad to be accepted on one hand...and on the other hand can't ( for many reasons...) shake the facts of it's origin.

FWIW-

I’m just glad Mitt Romney didn’t get the GOP nod. He was articulate and sometimes funny, but he just wasn’t the right guy.

Nor should a baptist accept everything that comes out of a preacher or pastor’s mouth.

Amen!!

We agree!

Acts 17: 11
Now the Bereans were of more noble character than the Thessalonians, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true.

If Joseph Smith had done the same; we would not be having this discussion today.

Should I hold every baptist, catholic, or other Christian accountable for any racist, sexist, inconsistent, or anti-Christian like comment ever made by a leader of the respective religion?

You certainly should if they are TEACHING ANOTHER GOSPEL than what was preached during the time of Christ. As far as their BEHAVIORS, don't get the cart before the horse: God can deal with behaviors of all kinds when hearts are right. First in importance: hearing the Gospel and then believing.

Galatians 1:

8 But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel other than the one we preached to you, let him be eternally condemned! 9 As we have already said, so now I say again: If anybody is preaching to you a gospel other than what you accepted, let him be eternally condemned!

1 Corinthians 15:1-4, the Gospel:

1 Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; 2 By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. 3 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; 4 And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:

Romans 5:

15 But not as the offense, so also is the free gift. For if through the offense of one many be dead, much more the grace of God, and the gift by grace, which is by one man, Jesus Christ, hath abounded unto many. 16 And not as it was by one that sinned, so is the gift: for the judgment was by one to condemnation, but the free gift is of many offenses unto justification. 18 Therefore as by the offense of one judgment came upon all men to condemnation; even so by the righteousness of one the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life.

Galations: 1:1-7

6 I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel: 7 Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ.

2 Timothy 4:3

3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears...

1 Corinthians 1:23-24

23 But we preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews a stumblingblock, and unto the Greeks foolishness; 24 But unto them which are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God.

Romans 1:21

21 Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.

The 150 year remark refers to most of the qoutes posted in this thread, but I am sure you already knew that.

Please, you are the one setting the target. You continue to tell me what I believe, when I know what I believe. Perhaps I should start telling you what you believe in, or I mean start making it up like you have been doing to me.

You continually refuse to hear what is said and refuse to honestly engage my posts.

I am proud of what I believe in, and have no problem talking to you about it, as long as you can be respectful.

here is a suggestion: actually read my posts and stop misrepresenting points and building stawmen arguments. Try to actually think and engage others.

If I had seen such personal attacks, I would have pulled them.

As it is, this thread has devolved into childish school yard bullying that doesn't reflect well on any of the correspondents or Free Republic - so it will be locked.

I wonder if the Song of Solomon is taught in mormon Sunday School ??????

Are you KIDDING???

All the kittens in SLC would keel over DEAD!

We can't have our young folks thinking thoughts that THAT book would engender!!!

How about we just talk about how awful Hillary! and Obama are, and how dangerous the anti-religious Left is?

Then we have to go to a different thread; for the title of this one is:

Sorry but that is not three pages - you will have to try harder.

While you have your Bible out maybe you would like to read Matthew 5:11-12.

Yeah, I’ve seen the KJV, as reinvented by Mormons, has been altered, added onto, and portions ripped out by Joseph Smith. That’s what is fundamentally the problem with Mormonism. Everything’s according to Joseph Smith, rather than Christ.

Obviously, I disagree about the Church's standing with Jesus

I missed that, I guess.

What are your disagreements with the mormon church standing with Jesus?

Would seem to me...on the face of it...to be a probable large issue.

Considering He is to me Adonai, Jehovah-Rophe, Jehovah-Shalom, El Shaddai, Jehovah, Jehovah-Shammah, Jehovah-Jirah, Jehovah-Nissi, Jehovah-Mkaddesh, Jehovah-Tsaba, Jehovah-Rohi, Jehovah-Tsidkenu, Elohim, El-Olam....

What is your issue?

Do you understand my point of view?

Doesn't HEADQUARTERS understand that these old things are STILL considered to be 'on the books'?

Why don't THEY merely collect them all up and publically state: "We don't believe this any more."?

Who ever said we “ripped out” the Song of Solomon. It’s in the KJV. We use the KJV.
__________________________________________

Joseph Smith ripped the Song of Solomon out of the King James Version of the Bible..

Now why did he do that ???

Also verses throughout the Bible that prove Joseph Smith, Brigham young,, Hinckley or any other mormon “prophet” to be wrong is disregarded or misquoted...may as well not be there...

And I dont “use” the Bible

I read it and love it and believe it and obey the words because they are the words of God...
