Obama appearance at Catholic college sparks protest
CNA ^ | January 15, 2007

The appearance at a Catholic college of a presidential candidate who supports abortion has provoked objections from the Cardinal Newman Society, an organization focusing on Catholic identity and renewal in higher education.

On Wednesday Democratic presidential candidate Barak Obama addressed St. Peter’s College, a Jesuit-run institution in Jersey City, New Jersey.  College president Dr. Eugene J. Cornacchia in a press release before the event said the college welcomed Obama “as we would welcome any presidential candidate who wishes to discuss and debate the ideas and events that are shaping our history.”

The college cooperated with the Obama campaign to provide links for media registration and public participation, with 1,074 individuals reportedly registered through the link.

Students from St. Dominic’s Academy, a girls’ Catholic high school in Jersey City, also performed at the rally in their school uniforms.

The Cardinal Newman Society said today that Obama supports partial birth abortion, embryonic stem cell research, and Roe v. Wade, the Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion on demand.

“It’s irresponsible for a Catholic college and its leadership to host a political rally for an aggressively pro-abortion candidate,” said Patrick J. Reilly, president of the Cardinal Newman Society. “Such events curry public attention at the expense of public morality. In so doing, they demonstrate reckless disregard for the most vulnerable human lives and contribute to the general decline of Catholic higher education.”

Reilly urged Catholic colleges and universities to “remain true to their Catholic identity and principles and reject any manipulation by politicians who work against these principles.”

“A college or university is dedicated to seeking and teaching truth, and a Catholic university embraces the truths of the Catholic faith,” he said.

Many years ago I was told by a college administration that college campuses were apolitical. Every time I see something like this, it reminds me of that conversation and the great belly laughs it induced.

Let's not forget that Obama also opposed the Born Alive Infant Protection Act four times in Illinois. And the man and his "church" has financial stake in partial birth. No self respecting Catholic should even think of pulling the lever for this man or any other Democrat-Socialist for that matter.

You can't be Catholic and pro abortion.

It only would have been acceptable had they challenged him on his support of abortion and embryonic stem-cell research, and made him debate the issues. It could have been a perfect time to corner him and see how he handled the challenge. Instead I am sure they just sat and let him "charm" them.

Doesn't anyone stand up to these politicians anymore and ask them for definitive answers? Why is everyone so afraid of asking the truly serious questions that really have an effect on the leadership decions we should be making? Instead we allow them to toss around hollow words like "change," "experience," etc. Simplistic buzz words for the uninformed and under-educated masses to hang onto. MEANINGLESS BABBLE! Yet we have no idea of what their change would be, or specific information about real experience. At least on the Democratic side.

While the Dems are busy tossing barbs at each other on the issue of race or sex I have heard little from them about the issues.

Except we have been told by our bishops that one should not be a single-issue voter. That issue would, of course, be anti-Catholicism, would it not. The Democratic Party consistently works to get the Church of the social services, including adoption, hospitals, and schools, but because so many of our bishop are social democrats they overlook such "small" matters.

This makes me sick, literally and figuratively!

How tragic to be betrayed by the "progressive ideas" of some of the 'powers that be".

[Barrack Hussein Obama’s record in the Illinois senate:]

- Opposed the Defense of Marriage Act; would work to repeal it in the U.S. Senate; would not vote for any legislation that would restrict the ability of gays and lesbians to marry.
- Opposed the Born Alive Infant Protection Act four times in Illinois. A similar bill passed the U.S. Senate 98-0. The Born Alive bill would have prohibited a baby from being born alive but left to die according to the mother’s wishes. Obama inexplicably opposed this bill not once, twice, or three times, but four times.
- Obama took almost $90,000 in bundled contributions from the Council for a Livable World. The council is a well-known anti-defense organization.
- Obama puts rigid ideology before what’s best for the people of Illinois, and presumably he would do that as President as well. He has on several occasions made public his opposition to the NAFTA trade agreement and his belief that it must be negotiated. All the while thanks to NAFTA, Illinois exports $1.3 billion in agricultural goods to Canada.
- Obama refused to vote for a bill in the Illinois State Senate that would have increased penalties for drug traffickers.
- Obama voted against a bill that would have delivered the death penalty to gang members who murder first responders.
- Finally, just in case you thought it couldn’t get any worse, Obama was the only member of the Illinois State Senate to vote against a bill that prohibited early release for sexual predators.

Can’t kill the innocent fast enough, can’t free the guilty soon enough!

He supports abortion.

The Catholic Church is adamantly against abortion.

This is terrible — if it is true. (Can’t always tell with the media. — haha)

I have not been told that a Catholic cannot be a single issue voter by our bishop.

Instead, there are grave moral wrongs upon which no Catholic can compromise, and abortion and homosexual marriage are two of them. Any vote for a candidate who espouses such grave moral wrongs is a vote to support the moral wrong. We are reminded that we should check candidates positions at lower office levels as well, since politicians move up...

The voters guide put out by the bishops conference says this in effect. Lyndon Johnson once joked that he wished he could find a one-handed economist. The bishops include a lot of two-handed theologians. “on the one hand...but on the other.” What is damning is the ambiguity. They express as much concern about the minimum wage as about abortion policy.

Yes...the “social justice” crowd.
The Iraq war and pontificating about a “living wage” have priority over the slaughter of babies.

The conference, unfortunately, as become largely a political group. The liberals among them have pushed the “democratic” idea that moral questions can be decided by a popular vote. I wish this pope a long, long life so that as many of the bishops appointed before 1990 will disappear and that Cardinal McCarrick and his ilk will soon go to heaven, before even retirement can’t keep them from trying to whip up votes for liberal causes.
