With tears streaming down her cheeks, Victoria Dumlao spoke of the day last month when she and others believe they saw an image of Jesus and his mother Mary in the sky above a Catholic shrine in Warren County. Yesterday, Dumlao was joined by thousands of other faithful who came to the National Blue Army Shrine in Washington Township to celebrate the 90th anniversary of the sightings of the Virgin Mary by three children in Fatima, Portugal considered one of the holiest events in the modern Catholic Church.
Her eyes glancing toward the sky, Dumlao, an organizer of the event who lives in Leonia, said she was among more than 1,000 Filipino-Americans who had come to the shrine on Sept. 8 in honor of the birth of Mary. "The sky, it showed us, Jesus, the Eucharist," she said. "To see is to believe." So, fueled by curiosity, spirituality and a hope they, too, would have a holy experience, the faithful more than 3,000 -- came by bus and church van, car from as far away as California to celebrate Mass and listen to several priests talk about the sightings.
"Just as everyone who sought refuge on Noah's ark, so, too, all those who find refuge in Mary will be saved from damnation and eternal death," Rev. Ronan Murphy preached. "Prayer is the most powerful force in the universe." The children, Lucia Santos and her cousins, Jacinta and Francisco Marto, said they saw visions of Mary, and heard messages from her about the world, on the 13th day of each month from May to September in 1917. On Oct. 13 of that year, a crowd of nearly 70,000 gathered for what the children said would be a sixth appearance.
Many reported seeing the sun change colors and dance in the sky.

It means that the Church has found merit in the apparition, but ultimately it is up to the ordinary believer to choose to believe or not. The Church in essence says there is merit to it, but one can choose whether or not to believe in it.
