Pope Asserts Catholic Primacy
The Washington Times ^ | July 11, 2007 | LORENZAGO DI CADORE

Pope Benedict XVI reasserted the primacy of the Roman Catholic Church, approving a document released yesterday that says other Christian communities are either defective or not true churches and Catholicism provides the only true path to salvation.

The statement brought swift criticism from Protestant leaders. "It makes us question whether we are indeed praying together for Christian unity," said the World Alliance of Reformed Churches, a fellowship of 75 million Protestants in more than 100 countries.

"It makes us question the seriousness with which the Roman Catholic Church takes its dialogues with the reformed family and other families of the church," the group said in a letter charging that the document took ecumenical dialogue back to the era before the Second Vatican Council.

It was the second time in a week that Benedict has corrected what he says are erroneous interpretations of the Second Vatican Council, the 1962-65 meetings that modernized the church. On Saturday, Benedict revived the old Latin Mass — a move cheered by Catholic traditionalists but criticized by more liberal ones as a step backward from Vatican II.

Well, the next time I see the Knights of Columbus or some other such group getting thier knickers in a twist because someone dared to question or insult their faith, I’ll just remind them their holy father is the one who is setting the example.

I might listen to the guy if they got their own house and doctrine in order. As it is he has no credibility.

Have the hundreds of Catholic priests guilty of molesting children assert Catholic primacy? I can’t remember.

Did the Medici family, which purchased more than one stint in the papacy, assert Catholic primacy as they used the papacy as a political office for their own gain?

Did those priests who were selling indulgences assert the primacy of the Catholic church?

Exactly why I posted the link:

The Supreme Pontiff Benedict XVI, at the Audience granted to the undersigned Cardinal Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, ratified and confirmed these Responses, adopted in the Plenary Session of the Congregation, and ordered their publication.

http://www.vatican.va/roman_curia/congregations/cfaith/documents/rc_con_cfaith_doc_20070629_responsa-quaestiones_en.html

Instead of posting links to a bunch of articles that erroneously reported what was said by Pope Benedict XVI as you did.

Five hundred years later and they're still 'protest-ing', I see. If they're really praying for Christian unity, then stop protesting the unity of the Catholic Church and jump in. I'd perfer death to joining something called "World Alliance of Reformed Churches".

I'm sure that the Greek Orthodox Church has a rather different view, being the older church.

I took the recognized historic position that Roman Catholicism began with Pope Peter I (the original Bishop of Rome). The original church was practicing Christianity in the catacombs or the "Eternal City" at a time that the emperors were putting adherents to death. That stopped with Constatine the Great finally accepted the faith and moved the church to modern day Istanbul so technically orthodoxy began approximately 700 years later.

Haha...allow me to rephrase: "if you want Christian unity all of you must conform to our view and come under the headship of the infallible pope." Sounds like a great Catholic solution (or...maybe the reason that people left it in the first place).

Gee, how did the Christian Church ever survive for 300 years amid relentless persecution without his holiness there to save the day. My bible tells me that whenever two or more come togeather in Jesus’ name he will be there. THAT is the Christian Church.

Isn’t it about time for The Holy Father to take a trip to another Arab country so he can visit another mosque and make more friends with the religion he respects?

Ummm, bull. The Roman church was one of the original patriarchates of the Christian church, but by no means the only one. It was decidedly not the Roman Catholic church. The Catholic church removed itself from communion with the rest of Christendom in 1054. Any popes before that date were properly bishops (patriarchs) of the universal church, which came to be called the Orthodox church after the Romans left it.

Setting the example?!?!

The Catholic church has been bombarded for years. Ever hear of Jack Chick? or how about this from another FReeper’s homepage....

“The Reformation is dying daily in our day when the Ecumenical Movement, and other forces like unto it, wish to soften the antithesis with Rome, today. I want to assure you that it’s not my pugnacious debating nature that makes me say we must exalt that antithesis and guard it. It’s my love for the Lord Jesus Christ and the purity of His word.
“Rome has not essentially changed. Rome declared that what it said at the time of the Reformation was infallible and could not change. Declared it to be irreformible truth. Rome has not changed and precious truths of God’s word are still worth upholding even at the cost of unity even at the cost of being considered “troublemakers” in the religious world. We need to guard the antithesis against the destructive error of Rome.”

Dr. Greg L. Bahnsen
From a tape, THE REFORMATION, October 28, 1990.

I think that this whole thing has gone back and forth.

Are you daft? I never claimed supremacy. I only bring down those who claim it. The papal claim of infallibility is so ludicrous, for the reasons I outlined among countless others, that anyone still a member of the Catholic church has some serious Tool-syndrome. Your tithe dollars subsidized the molestation of children. Not sure how you reconcile that with the Bible.
