How Old Is The Orthodox Faith
E-Mail | Unknown | Rev. Dr. Miltiades Efthimiou

If you are a Lutheran, your religion was founded by Martin Luther, an ex-monk of the Catholic Church, in the year 1517.

If you belong to the Church of England, your religion was founded by King Henry VIII in the year 1534 because the Pope would not grant him a divorce with the right to re-marry.

If you are a Presbyterian, your religion was founded by John Knox in Scotland in the year 1560.

If you are a Congregationalist, your religion was originated by Robert Brown in Holland in 1582.

If you are Protestant Episcopalian, your religion was an offshoot of the Church of England, founded by Samuel Senbury in the American colonies in the 17th century.

If you are a Baptist, you owe the tenets of your religion to John Smyth, who launched it in Amsterdam in 1606.

If you are of the Dutch Reformed Church, you recognize Mic helis Jones as founder because he originated your religion in New York in 1628.

If you are a Methodist, your religion was founded by John and Charles Wesley in England in 1774.

If you are a Mormon (Latter Day Saints), Joseph Smith started your religion in Palmyra, New York, in 1829.

If you worship with the Salvation Army, your sect began with William Booth in London in 1865.

If you are Christian Scientist, you look to 1879 as the year in which your religion was born and to Mary Baker Eddy as its founder.

If you belong to one of the religious organizations known as "Church of the Nazarene, Pentecostal Gospel," "Holiness Church," or "Jehovah's Witnesses," your religion is one of the hundreds of new sects founded by men within the past hundred years.

If you are Roman Catholic, your church shared the same rich apostolic and doctrinal heritage as the Orthodox Church for the first thousand years of its history, since during the first millennium they were one and the same Church. Lamentably, in 1054, the Pope of Rome broke away from the other four Apostolic Patriarchates (which include Constantinople, Alexandria, Antioch and Jerusalem), by tampering with the Original Creed of the Church, and considering himself to be infallible. Thus your church is 1,000 years old.

If you are Orthodox Christian, your religion was founded in the year 33 by Jesus Christ, the Son of God. It has not changed since that time. Our church is now almost 2,000 years old. And it is for this reason, that Orthodoxy, the Church of the Apostles and the Fathers is considered the true "one Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church."

This is the greatest legacy that we can pass on to the young people of the new millennium.

Does it mean anything else?

Considering the source, I reasoned it was a lame attempt to connect all Christians to the Inquisition. Of course, you and I know how silly that is.

Aaronic Blessing:

May the Lord bless you and keep you:
The Lord make his Face shine upon you:
and be gracious to you:
The Lord lift up His countenance upon you,
and give you peace.

I prefer this event from the lips of Yah'shua remembered by Peter through the pen of Mark

Mark 12:29 Jesus( Yah'shua ) answered, "The foremost is,
'HEAR, O ISRAEL! THE LORD OUR GOD IS ONE LORD;

Mark 12:30 AND YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART,
AND WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND, AND WITH ALL YOUR STRENGTH.'
[Deut. 6:4,5]

Mark 12:31 "The second is this, 'YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.'[Lev. 19:18]
There is no other commandment greater than these."

Mark 12:32 The scribe said to Him, "Right, Teacher; You have truly stated
that HE IS ONE, AND THERE IS NO ONE ELSE BESIDES HIM;

Mark 12:33 AND TO LOVE HIM WITH ALL THE HEART AND WITH
ALL THE UNDERSTANDING AND WITH ALL THE STRENGTH,
AND TO LOVE ONE'S NEIGHBOR AS HIMSELF,
is much more than all burnt offerings and sacrifices."

Mark 12:34 When Jesus (Yah'shua) saw that he had answered intelligently, He said to him,
"You are not far from the kingdom of God."

Perhaps enemies of the Bishop of Rome, but lovers of Christ and the true Church.

Here’s the Catholic version, they use a table:

Here’s an attribution to Ann Landers, posted in 2005, which I don’t believe, given that she was Jewish.

“This column by Ann Landers appeared in The Arizona Republic newspaper on Wednesday, November 20, 1996”
http://web3.hannity.com/forum/printthread.php?t=13685&page=3&pp=40

Indeed, Google indicates that the Catholic version is more prolific than the Orthodox version.

Protestantism’s problem is not the pope it’s the authority of the church which Christ explicitly granted to the church alone.

secular and atheist philosophy in west europe has magnified the self; the self is NOTHING in Christianity, and protestantism nothing more than vanity.

Why would the Bishop of Rome be your enemy?

Orthodox Christians have more to detest about Rome than anyone. But...Apostolic Succession is REAL.

I would not want to face the Lord with malice toward one of his chosen Bishops........

So I take it you have low regard for St. Athanasius? "The floor of hell is paved with the skulls of bishops".

Let's think of some of the Reformation era Popes that you hold in esteem.

Sixtus IV - Nepotism (a half dozen nephews appointed as Cardinals). Conspiracy to commit murder.

Innocent VIII - at least one marriage, one legitimate and a number of illegitimate children. Only appointed one nephew a Cardinal.

Alexander VI - several mistresses (one only 14 years old). Several illegitimate children by several different women, including married women.

Need I go on?

Did I say anything about plagiarism? It is clear that this thing has been floating around for a good while.

For all I know you have the original version and the Catholic versions are the ones which incorporated a pre-existing phraseology. And if you just wanted to fight it out with the Catholics, I wouldn’t care. But you wanted to spit in everyone’s oatmeal.

Got any scripture to back that up, or are you just relying on 'tradition'?

what’s the matter no open lines to the Holy Spirit to come up with a response?

(Hint protestantism is about telling everone that their own ‘personal interpretation’ is true, and ignoring that there’s 20,000+ and counting personal interpretations. It’s not the Holy Spirit working here it’s something else entirely.)

Your argument would carry more weight if you were in full communion with Rome.

The author of that article added the Orthodox to the list. The sheer ignorance of that individual shows in the very first sentence:

If you are Orthodox, your religion broke away from the Catholic Church from the 9th to the 12th centuries

Given that the mutual excommunication of the Bbishop of Constantinople (by a dead Pope and an illegitimate legate) and the Bishop of Rome (by a legitimate and living Bishop of Constantinople) occurred in 1054 (11th century), one must wonder what this individual had in mind.

The muutal excommunications (which were directed at two individual bishops and not particular Churches), were revoked and 'committed to oblivion' in 1964 — a fact that some still choose to ignore. As far as the Church is concerned, it never happened. But die hards will always be a few.

Remember, I am NO Roman Catholic, and I am very familiar with some of the corrupt Popes. However, they were still the Lord’s annointed, and that didn’t make their ordinations any less valid. They no doubt are answering to the Lord for their actions. I know of plenty of PROTESTANT leaders and ministers who are in the same boat.
