So I take it you have low regard for St. Athanasius? "The floor of hell is paved with the skulls of bishops".
Let's think of some of the Reformation era Popes that you hold in esteem.
Sixtus IV - Nepotism (a half dozen nephews appointed as Cardinals). Conspiracy to commit murder.
Innocent VIII - at least one marriage, one legitimate and a number of illegitimate children. Only appointed one nephew a Cardinal.
Alexander VI - several mistresses (one only 14 years old). Several illegitimate children by several different women, including married women.
Need I go on?
Remember, I am NO Roman Catholic, and I am very familiar with some of the corrupt Popes. However, they were still the Lord’s annointed, and that didn’t make their ordinations any less valid. They no doubt are answering to the Lord for their actions. I know of plenty of PROTESTANT leaders and ministers who are in the same boat.
Er, that would be St. John Chrysostom. Good try.

Their abilities to be popes is one thing; their personal corruption is an altogether a different story. Texconfenderate is referring to the latter.
You can be a superb pilot and a very rotten human being. You can be a famous surgeon who saved a lot of lives and also be a child molester.
Your skills do not bespeak your moral character, nor does your moral character bespeak your ability to perform your skills.
The Church looks at those popes as regards to their skills to steer the Church in the otrthodox faith. The Church is not called to judge them, and neither are we (for we have sinned and we all have dirt under our nails). That is left to God.

Many of these charges are quite spurious and unsubstantiated in the actual historical record. Others were actions taken before they took up a serious religious life. They have life by endless repetition without thought or investigation - i.e. Alexander VI was a wicked man because Savaonarola and the rest of his enemies since said so.
