'The Nativity Story' Movie Problematic for Catholics, "Unsuitable" for Young Children
By John-Henry Westen
NEW YORK, December 4, 2006 (LifeSiteNews.com) - A review of New Line Cinema's The Nativity story by Fr. Angelo Mary Geiger of the Franciscans of the Immaculate in the United States, points out that the film, which opened December 1, misinterprets scripture from a Catholic perspective.
While Fr. Geiger admits that he found the film is "in general, to be a pious and reverential presentation of the Christmas mystery." He adds however, that "not only does the movie get the Virgin Birth wrong, it thoroughly Protestantizes its portrayal of Our Lady."
In Isaiah 7:14 the Bible predicts the coming of the Messiah saying: "Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign. Behold a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and his name shall be called Emmanuel." Fr. Geiger, in an video blog post, explains that the Catholic Church has taught for over 2000 years that the referenced Scripture showed that Mary would not only conceive the child miraculously, but would give birth to the child miraculously - keeping her physical virginity intact during the birth.
The film, he suggests, in portraying a natural, painful birth of Christ, thus denies the truth of the virginal and miraculous birth of Christ, which, he notes, the Fathers of the Church compared to light passing through glass without breaking it. Fr. Geiger quoted the fourth century St. Augustine on the matter saying. "That same power which brought the body of the young man through closed doors, brought the body of the infant forth from the inviolate womb of the mother."
Fr. Geiger contrasts The Nativity Story with The Passion of the Christ, noting that with the latter, Catholics and Protestants could agree to support it. He suggests, however, that the latter is "a virtual coup against Catholic Mariology".
The characterization of Mary further debases her as Fr. Geiger relates in his review. "Mary in The Nativity lacks depth and stature, and becomes the subject of a treatment on teenage psychology."
Beyond the non-miraculous birth, the biggest let-down for Catholics comes from Director Catherine Hardwicke's own words. Hardwicke explains her rationale in an interview: "We wanted her [Mary] to feel accessible to a young teenager, so she wouldn't seem so far away from their life that it had no meaning for them. I wanted them to see Mary as a girl, as a teenager at first, not perfectly pious from the very first moment. So you see Mary going through stuff with her parents where they say, 'You're going to marry this guy, and these are the rules you have to follow.' Her father is telling her that she's not to have sex with Joseph for a year-and Joseph is standing right there."
Comments Fr. Geiger, "it is rather disconcerting to see Our Blessed Mother portrayed with 'attitude;' asserting herself in a rather anachronistic rebellion against an arranged marriage, choosing her words carefully with her parents, and posing meaningful silences toward those who do not understand her."
Fr. Geiger adds that the film also contains "an overly graphic scene of St. Elizabeth giving birth," which is "just not suitable, in my opinion, for young children to view."
Despite its flaws Fr. Geiger, after viewing the film, also has some good things to say about it. "Today, one must commend any sincere attempt to put Christ back into Christmas, and this film is certainly one of them," he says. "The Nativity Story in no way compares to the masterpiece which is The Passion of the Christ, but it is at least sincere, untainted by cynicism, and a worthy effort by Hollywood to end the prejudice against Christianity in the public square."
And, in addition to a good portrait of St. Joseph, the film offers "at least one cinematic and spiritual triumph" in portraying the Visitation of Mary to St. Elizabeth. "Although the Magnificat is relegated to a kind of epilogue at the movie's end, the meeting between Mary and Elizabeth is otherwise faithful to the scriptures and quite poignant. In a separate scene, the two women experience the concurrent movement of their children in utero and share deeply in each other's joy. I can't think of another piece of celluloid that illustrates the dignity of the unborn child better than this."

Indeed. Not what we are talking about. We are talking about the salvific role of works of charity, oer love, not out of obligation, not for material or social reward. Context is important.
St. Paul is not in the grave.
Context is important and Paul said it wasn't of works PERIOD. You are not saved because you do works of anything, charity or otherwise. You are saved by Grace through faith in Jesus Christ.
Luther's hagiography is very touching, but it has nothing to do with the theologies of the four solas, which separate us today.
St. Paul is taklking about circumcision, a work of law, in Galatians. The only general statement about "works PERIOD" is in St. James. You know what that says.
My apologies. (Preview is our friend

At least he survived. Lucaris was strangled.
In Ephesians Paul says it is NOT OF WORKS. In Romans and Galatians he speaks of being justified by Faith. Please don't try to explain away Paul's clear teaching. It couldn't be more clear.
Nobody advocates going out and being a big sinner (including Luther), but NOTHING we do can get us or contribute to our being saved.
Do you really thing that Jesus Christ would say that all that the Father gives him will come to Him and of them who come to Him he will lose nothing if it were somehow dependent upon us? Even the Apostle Paul did the things he didn't want to do and didn't do the things he wanted to do.
Galatians is NOT just about circumcision. That was the particular enslaver plaguing the Galatians. The Judaizers. However, Paul is explicit that trying to make one somehow be justified by the works of the FLESH after being perfected by the Spirit is anathema. Paul wanted them to go the whole way and emasculate themselves for trying to ENSLAVE the Galatians again.
He isn't promoting libertinism either. He is saying your faith has saved you. The Spirit works in you. Don't seek to be justified by the flesh any more because it doesn't work. Walk in the Spirit.
If Paul's work to the Galatians has no practical application today (since nobody is compelling us to be circumisised) then cut it out! Throw out all of Paul. That's what it seems some on this thread want to do. Ignore all of his teachings about Grace and Faith and Salvation - cherry pick a few scriptures that could be construed a certain way and then claim church authority makes it so. Sorry, it doesn't work that way.
Christ made a special appearance to the Apostle Paul when Paul was persecuting the church. Paul was already zealous in good works. He knew what that life was all about. He desired people to be free. The message Christ gave is that His grace was all that mattered and that grace was obtained through FAITH alone which was a work of the Spirit of God in one's life. The Spirit then would produce good works - not us.
Can you be so caught up in your religious fervor to think that ANYTHING you offer to God in way of your works is good enough to stand before the holiness of God? ALL of our righteousness is as filthy rags before him. There is NO GOOD in us. You simply can not be justified by your works. But if you are saved, your works will be evidence of the Spirit working in you. Charity only comes through the Spirit. You have to have the Spirit before you can do the acts of Charity which are pleasing to God.
Come out from your chains. Freedom awaits.
"Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;)And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus:
That in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus.
For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
Not of works, lest any man should boast.
For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them." -- Ephesians 2:5-10
How much clearer does it have to be?
We are created to do good works.
I like how the New Living puts Verse 10
Ephesians 2:10 For we are Gods masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.
God is the Master. He made us a new creation in Christ. But we have to be IN CHRIST before we could actually do the good things He planned. It's all His work in our life. Nothing we can do can save. Nothing we can do can lose our salvation. Those who the Father gives to Christ will come and of those who come to him he will lose NOTHING.
Yep. That's Calvinism 101:
A system of Christian interpretation initiated by John Calvin. It emphasizes predestination and salvation. The five points of Calvinism were developed in response to the Arminian position. Calvinism teaches:
1) Total depravity: that man is touched by sin in all parts of his being: body, soul, mind, and emotions.
2) Unmerited favor: that God's favor to Man is completely by God's free choice and has nothing to do with Man. It is completely undeserved by Man.
3) Limited atonement: that Christ did not bear the sins of every individual who ever lived, but instead only bore the sins of those who were elected into salvation.
4) Irresistible grace: that God's call to someone for salvation cannot be resisted.
5) Perseverance of the saints: that it is not possible to lose one's salvation.
AMEN! That's beautiful. "Become and live what you are already" in order to "prove" the will of God true.
"And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God." -- Romans 12:2

AMEN! Or else the blood of Christ can be bartered away to the highest bidder, in which case mercy is no longer mercy but recompense. And a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offence, even to them which stumble at the word, being disobedient: whereunto also they were appointed. But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light; Which in time past were not a people, but are now the people of God: which had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy." -- 1 Peter 2:7-10"Unto you therefore which believe he is precious: but unto them which be disobedient, the stone which the builders disallowed, the same is made the head of the corner,
I know of no Protestant minister who has kissed the Koran.
Those are the 5 points, but Augustine believed the same things and others prior to Calvin came to the same conclusion based upon Scripture. Call us Calvinists if you wish, but the doctrine traces to Scripture itself and was expressed outside of Scripture at least by the 300s.
