As much as I would like it that he were Catholic, he was not. His marriage to Sarah Lewis in 1800 was recorded in St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in St. Charles, Missouri. In the record he stated that he was Presbyterian. See the record here.

The Boone family origins in Europe turn out to be quite unknown. Good claims are put forward that his people were French, German, English, Scottish or Irish.

My own thesis is that the Boone's were simply part of a Camisard (Quaker) group that fled to America at the time of the recission of the Edict of Nantes. The name is clearly Breton in form, probably Bo-Ne, the Ne family being very numerous in the Camisard heartland around Angiers and Saumer.

That is to say, the Boone's were non-Calvinist Huguenots ~ readily overlooked in Quaker Pennsylvania.

I have no idea if they fled first to England (which was likely), but they would have moved on to America quite quickly.

Actually that refers to the marriage of Boon's son, Daniel Morgan Boone. If you look at the document that is referred to, you will find that Daniel Morgan Boone professed to being a Presbyterian and his wife a Protestant.

Though I have no idea why the question is of any great importance it should be noted that his "conversion" is a matter of controversy.

Many believe that Wayne had converted to Roman Catholicism in 1979 shortly before his death. This was based on information by now deceased journalist Alan Dumas. I believe he was Quaker and that he moved to Kentucky to avoid being involved in the Revolutionary War.
