In my experience, almost every win for "moderates" is actually a win for liberals in disguise. Something we all need to keep in mind. Here in left looney Iowa and west loony Illnois, it is amazing what you hear from the pulpits when I go to a Catholic church here. On priest actually had a pro homosexual message in his sermon, and was praised as being "moderate".
I suspect that the RCC has been kept from following the ECUSA and others to closly for a number of reasons. First of all, it is big enough that you can have radicals and orthodox inside but not have them visibly "bump heads" as it were. Second, some of those orthodox saw the wave coming and mounted a counter attack. In the Anglican commuion, by the time most figured out just what was going on it was almost to late.

Rev. Susan Russell: I find it odd that the people in the Episcopal Church would talk about scripture as if they were some fringe element fundamentalist. One of the reasons our church broke with Rome was because of issues like the Magesterium. Now they want one? They don't want to respect sacred scriputre AND they don't want a Magisterium.
What do they want to put in place of these things?
Nothing more than a nihilistic "affirmation" of their own selfish and wanton desires.
Disgusting.

Ironic how the "ahistorical" and "rationalist" literalist churches have escaped liberalism altogether while the "conservative" ritualistic and non-literalist churches have not! There are also Catholics who pride themselves on being "rationalist" because they look to the clear and rational exposition of Thomas Aquinas.
When I point out that I am an admirer of Thomas as well and that like Thomas I believe that the Scripture is completely literally inerrant and that this complete literal inerrance is the foundation on which all correct exposition of the Scripture is founded, I sometimes get a reaction of confused annoyance.

Bishop Robinson: Well, for the record I can say I am helping with the spiritual needs of these men and in what form and whether this occurs privately or in groups, that is all I will say. But, yes I continue to help make out with them.

One person said to me, If I do cross the Tiber, I will preach from the rooftops about the wickedness I have seen envelop my church. I cannot stand to see this happen to anyone else. . . . and I do. I've had occasion to witness to several well-meaning people who thought it would be "just fine" if women were ordained, etc. . . .

Reminder that on July 31, 12 catholic women will ride a boat down some river in Pennsylvania and be ordained priests. We have the great comfort of knowing that the next day, the Holy Father will ask them to retract their 'vows' or be excommunicated. These women are stubborn and defiant.

The Episcopalians are suffering for the fact that they have allowed the teachings of their church to be updated within a framework of belief which postulates that, as human societies progress -- a term I use in the pejorative as regards moral values here -- so must religious doctrine change in kind. This approach violates one of the core underpinnings of Roman Catholicism, first expounded in truly articulate form in the writings of St. Augustine, which is that the most basic explanation for why human societies rise and fall in a cyclical pattern is that human fallibility will always lead to depravity and the breaking of God's covenant. For a society to survive and avoid this eventual decline (declension) it must hold fast to those permanent and infallible religious truths that form the basis of the foundation of the Covenant of Redemption between God and mankind. The Episcopalians have violated this precept in permitting the fallible conclusions of an ever-changing social order to infect their religious doctrine, thus placing themselves on a path in which they will eventually find themselves, as Catholics would say, outside the Covenant of Redemption. Roman Catholicism has avoided this by holding fast to those permanent and infallible religious truths which are not submissible to the changing whims of the social doctrine of the current generation.

I try. I may not be eloquent or diplomatic, but I try. I got off one sinking ship. I'll get out cutlass and boarding axe if I have to, to prevent this one from going down.

Gotta love St. Augustine ... and his mother, St. Monica, who prayed for his conversion. Thanks for that post.

In any case, the deconstruction of Scripture is quite useless, since it amounts to making what is wriiten in the Bible dependent on a historical record that is largely hypothetical.
