Cleveland bishop contacts Vatican about retirement Associated Press

CLEVELAND - The city's Roman Catholic bishop, who will celebrate 25 years in that post on Friday, has asked the Vatican to consider appointing his replacement.

Bishop Anthony Pilla declined to reveal the reasons for his retirement request, saying a letter he had written to the Vatican was private.

The date of his retirement is at the discretion of the Vatican, said Pilla, who is awaiting a response from Pope Benedict XVI and his staff.

"I have let the Holy See know that it would be good for the diocese," Pilla told The Plain Dealer for a story Thursday.

Bishop Pilla Writes Letter Of Resignation
Bishop Will Not Share Reason

CLEVELAND -- Cleveland's Catholic Diocese Bishop Anthony Pilla has written a letter to the Vatican asking to be replaced, NewsChannel5 reported.

Pilla, 73, will not disclose why he placed the request to retire. He said the reason is between him and the Vatican.

Usually, bishops are replaced when they are 75 years old, but can stay on in the post at the pope's request.

WEWS reported Pilla has suffered from a few health problems. He had a quadruple bypass in 1997 that was followed by an infection. He also had prostate cancer in 1999.

Pilla was asked if his health problems contributed to his decision to resign and he said he didn't want to get into that, and that he was doing what was best for the diocese.

On Friday, Pilla will celebrate his 25th anniversary as ninth bishop of Cleveland.

There are 800,000 Catholics in the Cleveland diocese.

There isn't an official timetable when a letter of resignation is submitted. Pilla said he is awaiting a response from Pope Benedict XVI and his staff.

He has spent the past few years dealing with the clergy sex-abuse scandal and coping with health problems. Pilla had a quadruple bypass operation in November 1997, then was diagnosed the next month with a life-threatening staph infection. He also had prostate surgery in fall 1999.

I knew about it for about 10 minutes. The phone rang, so my posting was delayed. Thanks for posting it though. :-)

This would certainly justify his request:

"He has spent the past few years dealing with the clergy sex-abuse scandal and coping with health problems. Pilla had a quadruple bypass operation in November 1997, then was diagnosed the next month with a life-threatening staph infection. He also had prostate surgery in fall 1999."

My opinion: Pilla saw the writing on the wall. This is a sampling of what has taken place under his reign.

Hoping some other bishops will follow and do what is best for the souls in their diocese.

I guess this would have nothing to do with the allegations that Pilla perjured himself during an abuse case and the vow of the plaintiff's attorney to bring him before a grand jury, would it??

Couldn't be.

And of course, in that wonderfully communicative episcopal way which we've come to know and love from AmChurch, Pilla declines to say why.

Diago, I think she means you.

On a side note, I've just been told that we are to be invited to the ordination of the new bishop of Reno in February. My inclination is to just stay home, but my wife would like to go even though we don't really know him. I was wondering if anyone's ever been to one and if it would be worth going to? Also, will they likely show it on EWTN?

Cleveland rocks! Good for them. I pray the new Bishop will be just what the Holy Spirit ordered.
