Top Ten Changes a Catholic Majority would Make to the Supreme Court [Humor]

As David Bernstein points out today in this post on The Volokh Conspiracy, the confirmation of Judge Samuel Alito to the Supreme Court will result in a Catholic majority on that bench. It seems timely, therefore, to speculate on the potential changes in store for that august institution:

10) Meat-less Fridays all year round in the Supreme Court cafeteria;

9) Oral arguments in Latin;

8) The bones of Chief Justice Marshall will be disinterred and placed in a glass coffin in the center of the Supreme Court bench;

7) Collections between each session of oral argument;

6) Supreme Court windows replaced with stained glass;

5) On close votes, the Justices will consult a statue of St. Thomas More. If the statue weeps, they affirm; if no tears, then they reverse.

4) Incense at the start of each session;

3) Supreme Court opinions will be deemed infallible and unreviewable by any earthly authority [Ed. - Sorry - that does not appear to be a change at all]

2) Catechism of the Catholic Church will now be "persuasive authority";

And, the number one change which a Catholic majority would make to the Supreme Court . . .

1) Wednesday night bingo!

When your wife has that much money and they won't even give you a wafer, or a drop of communion wine, then you may not actually be "in good the good graces" of The Church. **Didn't I read somewhere that Kerry had been denied Communion?

**Probably the only real problem that Ted has is that he wants his wafer and a 5 liter box of Communion wine so he can "have one for the road".

*(Not many Priests (or some of the rest of us) will refuse a nip of spirits on a chilly day, either.

One ancient Priest told me one blustery day as he had a nip with my grandmother, it's good for arthritis, all things in moderation and why don't you go play with the other children? :-)

One good thing, quite often when there it's not bingo night, they will invite AA groups to use the church's recreation area to have their meetings.

Losing a ruling from the Supreme Court can be reversed by an action of contrition. Bids start at ten million.

*Doctrine doesn't change. Start your own Supreme Court :)

Meat-less Fridays all year round in the Supreme Court cafeteria;

*Too few Christians realize that every Friday of the year remains a day of Universal Penance. Me and mine remain Fish-heads

From Cooperatores Veritatis:

Go In Peace Mr. President, Your Sin Has Been Forgiven

One element in the theology of forgiveness that is often overlooked in our "non-judgmental" culture is that for forgiveness to be efficacious, the sinner must acknowledge his sin and display a willingness to make restitution for any harm done.

For dems,(liberal emailing suggested):

Just in case our justices get shaky:

Thankfully, President Bush's nomination of Judge Samuel Alito to the U.S. Supreme Court in the aftermath of the Harriet Miers debacle seems to be an indication that the President indeed understands that.

Granted, he needed the fraternal correction of the conservative base to help him see the light. But as Proverbs 17:10 says: "A rebuke goes deeper into a man of understanding than a hundred blows into a fool. "

And the Alito SCOTUS nomination demonstrates that the rebuke was not wasted on the President.

Deo Gratias!

Go in peace, Mr President. Your sin is forgiven.

But don't think this means you can nominate Alberto Gonzalez when the next SCOTUS vacancy comes up.

They should consider installing a copy of Michelangelo's The Last Judgement . Contemplating 'Jesus the Judge of All', was most effective in selecting the latest successor to St. Peter.

LOL!

When we were received into the church, we gave the priest a bottle of good old vintage port (Taylor Fladgate '77). His eyes shone with anticipatory joy (let's recruit more and better Anglicans with good taste in wine!)
