ATLANTA -- With a possible historic vote looming on a measure supporting same-sex marriage, the head of the United Church of Christ on Tuesday publicly endorsed the resolution for the first time.

The Rev. John H. Thomas said Tuesday that the church's General Synod "should affirm the rights of gay, lesbian and transgender persons" to have marriages "equal in name, privileges and responsibilities to married heterosexual couples."

"I believe our local churches, as they are able, should move toward the development of marriage equality policies," Thomas added during a speech at Emory University.

That remark drew a lengthy standing ovation from the audience of about 200.

The same-sex marriage resolution is one of three expected to be voted on by the General Synod at its annual meeting this weekend in Atlanta. . . .

When you see certain denominations mentioned in stories like this you are glad you aren't a member. The UCC has taken several liberal stands over recent years. Too bad.

They were liberal in our town when I was growing up -- seems some things never change. I grew up in a Republican area and most of the RATs went to that church so this doesn't suprise me at all.

UCC got major network facetime after their last commercial recruitment scandal. Remember they produced those notorious "Jesus didn't turn people away" commercials showing stone faced doormen turning blacks and gays away? The subtext being that the UCC not racist like regular Christianity.

In 1996 the United Church of Christ's board sent a letter to President Clinot urging him to veto a ban on partially delivering a baby, sticking a scissors in the back of the babies neck and then sucking the brains out. Jesus Christ and baby killing somehow don't go together. More apostate Christians using Jesus of Nazareth to advance a political agenda.
