What’s your theological worldview? [light entertainment]
The Confessing Reader ^ | 6/15/2005 | Confessing Reader

For a few minutes’ light entertainment, you might consider taking the “What’s you theological worldview quiz“. My results indicated a significant affinity for Neo-Orthodoxy (”You reject the human-centredness and scepticism of liberal theology, but neither do you go to the other extreme and make the Bible the central issue for faith. You believe that Christ is God’s most important revelation to humanity, and the Trinity is hugely important in your theology. The Bible is also important because it points us to the revelation of Christ. You are influenced by Karl Barth and P T Forsyth.”), followed closely by Evangelical Holiness/Wesleyan.

The quiz has several of those, “But that question misses the point” sort of questions, (so I had a number of neutral responses), but I suppose this makes some sense. Though I long identified more with the Calvinist/Reformed side of the magisterial Reformation, I have in later years been more influenced by the theology of Barth (of course, Barth is a Reformed theologian) and by writers like Lesslie Newbigin and Robert Jenson, for whom the person of Jesus and the triune being of God is absolutely central.

I’m not so sure about that Evangelical Holiness/Wesleyan result, save that I have some affinity for the Wesley brothers’ evangelical High Anglicanism, deeply sacramental and deeply rooted in the Scriptures, and for their early high estimation of the Church Fathers.

Thanks to Will over at Prydain for the link to the quiz.

Funny how Wesleyan comes second or third for everybody. If I were Methodist, I'd be troubled by that.

You scored as Roman Catholic. You are Roman Catholic. Church tradition and ecclesial authority are hugely important, and the most important part of worship for you is mass. As the Mother of God, Mary is important in your theology, and as the communion of saints includes the living and the dead, you can also ask the saints to intercede for you.

I'm not sure how I got the "Evangelical Holiness/Wesleyan" tag. Maybe because I didn't say folks who pray in tongues are going to Hell. * chuckle *

Speaking of the troubled, what's your 75% about?

Not interested in the quiz but I will put forth my common sense theological reasoning:

God must be eternal if he exists and if he does not exist there is no answer for the question, "Where did the universe come from?"

So since God has always been here it might be possible that He would wish to communicate His presence to conscious beings such as ourselves. Thus one would of necessity look to the world's oldest religions that have stood the test of time, so to speak.

There are only two. Hindu and Hebrew. All other world religions are simply offshoots of those two but for tribal animist religions which can be dismissed as they sprout like the grass and wither away similarly.

Personally I reject Hinduism because it is obviously a silly polytheistic human construct. It's description of creationism alone reveals it to be basically a cartoon.

So we have Judaism and the Bible standing alone. Read it. See that it's central theme is the falleness of man and his only rescue is The Messiah. Christ claimed to be the Messiah and the evidence supports this claim. The Messiah quoted the 'Old Testament' extensively ... therby authenticating it. He also prophesied the future of Mankind. EVERYTHING is covered. You have to willfully NOT want to know The Truth to reject it.

As far as the many sects of Christianity, which in fact is Judaism for the Gentiles, I discount them all. Foolish traditions of men. Just read the red and study the Old Testament quotes of The Messiah. You cannot fail to 'get it'.

That's my "other lung", at 75% capacity.

Sure are a lot of closeted Methodists around here.

I'm one of those Methodists too! How strange, I've been a Catholic my entire life.

Double digits in the "modern liberal" category? hmm, what's that about?

What may be going on there is that the Wesley Brothers (or as my somewhat irreverent Methodist BIL calls them, "Chuck and Jack") were very traditional Anglicans. The Anglicans' doctrine (with a few exceptions that they like to hyperventilate about) is basically Catholic.

So it stands to reason there would be a lot of overlap between Wesleyan Methodism (i.e. old-fashioned Anglicanism) and Catholicism.

That doesn't explain HarleyD, whose Catholicism is at 0% (here's someone putting "protest" back in Protestantism) is also 71% Wesleyan.

I got the same result -- Evangelical Holiness/Wesleyan. This surprised me, especially the Methodist reference, as I'm the type to go to churches that meet in school gymnasiums.

You got me there. Maybe it's an invented category for trad-minded iconodules who like the pope. I think I'll re-take the quiz to see if I can produce a result that's straight "Orthodox" (redundant; I know).

Double digits in the "modern liberal" category

I don't have the foggiest. Probably, not enough fervor in the Bible literalism department. Since when Modern Liberal is a Christian denomination, anyway?

This would be a useful test:

What heresy are you?

- Christ is a hero fighting the evil Jewish God
- Only good men belong to a church
- Communion is a memorial snack
- Man is dung
- Christ called Peter "rock" in order to insult him
...

someone should get to work.

You scored as Reformed Evangelical. You are a Reformed Evangelical. You take the Bible very seriously because it is God's Word. You most likely hold to TULIP and are sceptical about the possibilities of universal atonement or resistible grace. The most important thing the Church can do is make sure people hear how they can go to heaven when they die.

Some of those questions are very poorly worded. For example: "God said it. I believe it. That settles it." This is actually somewhat oxymoronic since at the same time it recognizes the Word of God as absolute truth yet adds personal acceptance to it in order to make it authoritative.

Anyway, no real surprises here.

You scored as Evangelical Holiness/Wesleyan. You are an evangelical in the Wesleyan tradition. You believe that God's grace enables you to choose to believe in him, even though you yourself are totally depraved. The gift of the Holy Spirit gives you assurance of your salvation, and he also enables you to live the life of obedience to which God has called us. You are influenced heavly by John Wesley and the Methodists.

The Methodists? Erk.

Yep, light entertainment, but very interesting. Some of the questions were kind of generalized which may have skewed my results.
