WASHINGTON, Feb. 11 (UPI) -- There is no way to understand the horror of priestly pedophilia in the Archdiocese of Boston and elsewhere unless one accepts the existence of the Evil One as a powerful reality.
The Catholic celibacy rule is doubtless a contributing factor, as is the collapse of the structure of the priesthood since the Second Vatican Council.
But what is Scripture if not the story of a cosmic struggle between God and the Prince of the World, as Luther called Satan?
Suppose you were the Devil, extremely intelligent, mighty, and determined to destroy God's creation -- where would you attack most efficaciously?
First, you'd try to corrupt God's son by trying to persuade him to fall down and worship you (Matthew 4:9). When that doesn't work, you'd have him nailed to the cross.
And if that backfires, you'd do your best to attack the very men who stand in for Christ at the altar as they consecrate the Eucharist -- the priests.

Author more or less blows his credibility right there.
Yep. If someone is a bachelor all his life, then he must be a pervert. (Sarcasm)
"Author more or less blows his credibility right there."
I disagree. It's unnatural to expect a human male to never have sexual relations. The Church is simple seeing that unnatural practice manifest itself in the pedophilia scandals.
Celibacy does not cause grown men to molest little boys. It is called sodomy, to be Biblical. Homosexually-oriented men (perverts) molest little boys.
So? Many would say, monogamy is innatural.
OTOH, it's perfectly Godly to expect a man to exercise self control.
"it's perfectly Godly to expect a man to exercise self control."
and extremely unrealistic, as the scandals involving men of cloth of ALL faiths have shown.
Let priests marry. Forbid gays from becoming priests. Problem solved. This whole 'celibacy' ideal is complete, manmade nonsense anyways. There's nothing Biblical to back it up.
God said 'Be Fruitful and multiply', not 'Be Fruity and fondle boys'
With God, all things are possible.
"With God, all things are possible."
Unfortunately for numerous children, possible != probable.
That is your opinion.
"That is your opinion."
Not really. The urge to procreate is naturally present in every healthy male, which is fortunate for the propagation of our species.
If they can't get married, at least let them use the Jocelyn Elders method of sexual self-gratification.
I wonder how many acts of perversion were committed on children over the last millenium before some finally had the courage to stand up to these sick perverts that masquerade as 'priests'?
When men reject God, the results (from Shanley to the Soviet Union) are predictable.
"Yes because fathers never molest their own children"
True, but that's not causing the PR problem for the Vatican that a small % of perverted priest are.
I support equal punishment for whomever molests a child, btw.
Your post reflects a mentality I have no desire to communicate with. Good day.
"When men reject God, the results (from Shanley to the Soviet Union) are predictable."
Absolutely. Is there something that can be done to better 'weed out' those who'd turn from God at the first (or 101st) time of temptation? That's all my "let them marry" is trying to accomplish, btw.
Realistically, it'd probably be near-impossible to have a healthy marriage and be a parish priest at the same time, due to the overwhelming time commitments required by both. I'm a realist here but would like to see the Vatican at least try SOMETHING.
And why isn't this as widespread in the Protestant faiths?
"Your post reflects a mentality I have no desire to communicate with. Good day."
Your post reflect a mentality that doesn't appear to be interested in fixing a serious problem. Ignoring it won't make it go away. I thus have no desire to communicate with you. Good day."
"The urge to procreate has nothing whatever to do with buggering teenage boys. When was the last time you ever heard of a man or boy getting pregnant as the result of bunghole sex? If Shanley, Geoghan, et al. were overwhelmed by the urge to procreate, they'd have been committing adultery or fornication with teenage girls or young women"
It's all about a sex drive, though. You're right, though. See my "can the Vatican weed out the perverts?" suggestion.
