"More Catholic Than the Pope" — New Book Responds to Arguments Raised by Extreme Traditionalists
Envoy Encore Weblog ^ | 07-30-04 | Patrick Madrid

Posted on 07/31/2004 3:18:06 PM PDT by Patrick Madrid

Catholic canon lawyer Peter Vere and I have co-authored a new book critiquing the claims and controversies of extreme traditionalism that will come out in September, published by Our Sunday Visitor Publishing.

Written in a popular and accessible style, More Catholic Than the Pope provides a detailed analysis of and response to common arguments raised by extreme traditionalist Catholics (in particular, adherents of the Society of St. Pius X) against the Second Vatican Council, Pope John Paul II, the fact that the late Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre committed a schismatic act by illicitly ordaining four bishops in 1988, and more. Chapters include a history of the SSPX, a background on the controversy between the SSPX and the so-called "Conciliar Church," and answers to several standard canon-law and historical arguments often raised by extreme traditionalists.

Our hope is that, by God's grace, the evidence presented in this new 224-page book will inform, encourage, and strengthen Catholics who have been shaken or confused by the misguided arguments raised against the Catholic Church by some extreme traditionalists and, with regard to those who have adopted a schismatic mindset, that this book will help them recognize the errors of extreme traditionalist groups, help them to see why they should abandon those errors, and help them come home to the Catholic Church.

Additional details on More Catholic Than the Pope will be available soon at Envoy Encore weblog.

"Again with the slander!"

According to sinkspur, it is not slander, since this was done when he and his wife were satanists, so it is OK.

Truth is always a defense against slander.

Look, Patrick Madrid posted this article and his coauthor, Peter Vere, has been accused of assisting his former girlfriend and now wife to have an abortion.

Surely, Mr. Madrid can ask his coauthor whether or not the accusation is true or not and passing along the information to the rest of us.

The fact that Mr. Madrid has not addressed this issue speaks volumes about the truthfulness of the charge.

Try using a lick of common sense.

You post like this is all new information you were previously unaware of.

When the day comes where your observations about the depth of my faith matter, I'll be sure to let you know!

You, of all people, calling ME on the accusation!

I stand by my accusation. You obviously have backed off from yours.

You were the one who added your own embellishment to the charge; and then retracted everything.

You waffle more than Kerry.

I didn't waffle; I stand corrected.

Since you produced no evidence to back up your assertion, you stand as a liar and a slanderer.

Prove it, or shut up.

"Most Catholics just want to go to Mass and take care of their families."

Not really.

"Fewer Catholics, 38 percent, report attending church on at least a weekly basis."
http://abcnews.go.com/sections/us/DailyNews/church_poll020301.html

Was attendance at Mass higher or lower prior to Vatican II?

That's funny, I think Caiphas said the same thing.

Although church attendance among Protestants has remained stable, Mass attendance has declined steadily from the 1950s, when 75 percent of Catholics went to church every weekend, to now, when only one-third attend weekly. This decline has been steeper among younger cohorts (only about one-quarter of today’s young adults attend weekly) than older ones (about 60 percent of whom still attend weekly).

"It's the democratization of the Church through the back door of so-called conservative Catholicism."

And when they take a vote, they will vote for women priets and allow priets to marry. It is just a matter of time. They are setting the stage now.

I hope not, but that is the problem. Once someone declares that they worship the Lie, how do you ever know that they have stopped lying? Only if they are silent.

Excellent post.

I don't mean this to sound equivocating, but the abortion aspect of this is one that many 'good' Catholics cannot say word one on, 'cause a sizeable portion of the abortions which have occurred have been procured by Catholics. So, if it's true, he's just another sinner among us, but the satanist thing, if true, is on a whole different order of magnitude, and is worthy of a second, deeper look. And the fact that the poster of this piece hasn't said word one on the false nature of this claim isn't reassuring.

You're right about the common sense, and although it's true gossiping is a Sin (but if it's true, is it gossip?), you'd have to factor in intent on whether it was Mortal or Venial. In other words if the poster of this info bevlieves it is true and feels he's acting in the best interest of the Church, I'm not sure how to judge that.

There is so much hatred and dislike and uncharitable thought and speech evinced on these threads, that any admonitions about who is sinning and who is not, doesn't and can't carry much weight, IMO.

Walking the walk is important, that's the greatest gift and power you have to Evangelize and Convert.

That's basic Catholic teaching, the stuff about slander. It's nothing pertaining to anyone's "depth of faith". That woudl be small 'f' faith, which is sort of a sentimental thing anyways.

"Catholic education has been targeted for social engineering in bizarre liberal and modernist ways. Now, the people who see something positive in Vatican II overlook the very obvious liberal modernist ways that Catholic culture has been eroded in Catholic institutions by invocations of "the spirit of Vatican II.""

Yep.

One would have to be willfully blind not to notice.

Did they just force their way into the Church or did they force their way into control of the Church? 176 posted on 08/01/2004 7:26:12 AM PDT by Max Combined

One could debate the meaing of "forced." At any rate, the official Catholic Church in contemporary America is at least being manipulated in part by public heretics and those secretly anti-Catholic orientation. That certainly raises a lot of questions.

Although church attendance among Protestants has remained stable

Protestant church attendance has ALWAYS averaged about a third of registered members.

My thoughts exactly. Past sins forgiven in the confessional... that's one thing, and to be respected. But the satanist thing I would really, really like to see addressed by Vere himself. Now that it's been stated, for good or ill, I'd like to know the story behind it.

I think that's fair, if it's true and already in the open. Slander is most definitely to be avoided, and past sins are to be forgotten. But there are some past things that, though forgiven, leave deep scars that must be noted. The effects of certain actions are not always easy to leave behind.

The floor fight for control of the "correct" interpretation of Vatican II has been going on for a long time. One might suspect it will continue to go on as long as there are goofy modernist things going on in the official church. But Vatican II did not invent the Catholic faith. Everything one needs to believe in order to be a Catholic existed before the 1960s - the Creed, the articles of faith, the sacramental theology, the mysterium fidei, etc.

So Amchurch has now become Protestant?

The earth revolves around the sun.

By your standard and that of Nyer, since I have produced no evidence to back up my assertion, I am a liar and guilty of committing a mortal sin.
