This is a new one on me...sounds pretty aggressive on the LDS' part. Leave people alone...even after they're dead, IMO.

They've done it to a bunch of our dead relatives.

Such a practice is not biblical. But I'm not sure that has stopped the LDS in the past.

I'd think there were better things to get upset about. If you believe the practice is kooky and illegitimate, how does it affect you or your ancestors if Mormons SAY it has some effect on your ancestors. You know the truth. How can it have any negative effect anyway? Better to get upset that living spokesmen for your people are liberals!

It has to do with their beliefs about what happens after death. Here is one link: http://www.catholic.com/library/Mormonism_Baptism_for_the_Dead.asp This is a link to info on Mormonism: http://www.bbc.co.uk/religion/religions/mormon/list.shtml This last site is really a good place to explore. I'm not a Mormon and most of their doctrine is foreign to me. This site was very helpful to me in understanding their religion and how it's different from what I think of as Christianity.

Hold the phone. If the Jews don't believe in Jesus then why do they give a hoot what goes on in the Church of JESUS CHRIST of Latter Day Saints? I don't get this.

Wait until the Muslims hear about this and convert all the victims of 9/11 to Islam. Then they ramp up their jihad against America for killing 3000 Muslims.

Mormons have been baptised for the dead for about a century now, this is not new news.

In the Bible, anyone who got baptised was alive, and they chose to do it the selves, doing it for someone is a foolish practice that has no merit for either person.

I don't think they should be so concerned. If one does not adhere to the Mormon rules, they shouldn't have to worry about a process like this. Perhaps the Jews are worried about the NAMES of their loved ones and ancestors being involved in this, which would be a somewhat different matter. But on the whole, as an ex-Mormon, I'd say this ceremony has NO EFFECT on the status of any deceased person's soul, no matter what their chosen religion. I've seen articles about this before, but I don't think the Jews need to worry about this. Nothing is "happening" to the souls or even the memories of their loved ones and relatives. Once you die, you're judged. All the "baptism" in the world isn't going to change whatever happened to your soul at that moment. "For it is given to men to die once, then comes the judgment..." (I don't have the reference for this, but I believe Jesus said it.)

Mormons hit a new low... desecration of the dead.

For shame! I thought these were good people despite the fact that their sect is based on an obvious fraud.

Seems like some morbid preoccupation with blood over values, to me.

This has been a part of Mormon religious practice for quite a while and that is why the LDS puts so much time and money into collecting geneological data from around the world.

There is absolutely nothing in it for the Mormons other than believing that they are helping a total stranger that died long ago to get into Heaven.

If you don't believe in Mormonism, and I don't, it can't possibly hurt your ancestors any more than the Pope blessing America can hurt a Southern Baptist. If you want to research your geneology, the Mormons have already done a lot of work for you.

The practice is of as purely religious nature as it can be. As such, it is fully protected by the First Amendment and this lawsuit will get nowhere in my opinion.

If the lawsuit does succeed, be prepared to get socked with a lawsuit if word ever gets out that you prayed for anybody outside of your own particular religious affiliation at your place of worship.

I understand the sensitivity because of the past evil of forced baptisms of Jews in Europe in medieval times. However, this kind of, uh, "morbid" sensitivity is not helping intercommunal relations, IMHO. God determines the sacramental effect of a baptism, not the LDS Church.

I don't see what the problem is. If the Mormons are wrong, than post-death baptisms at least make them feel good. If Mormons are right (not likely, but I suppose possible) than it saves the souls of dead Jews. Either way, Jews aren't harmed and Mormons feel better.

Given everything that's happening to my people in the world today, I think we have better things to worry about.

"the dead are baptized by living church members who stand in as proxies. "

Positively ridiculous! Indicates the falseness of their beliefs! Only a LIVING person can be baptized with any meaning. When you're dead, your fate has already been determined by God. Then again, my God is not the same as their god with this kind of practice.

I really think the Mormons should start READING those KJV Bibles they strive to give out since this is NOT Biblical by any stretch of the imagination.

For believers in God, the one in the Bible, this will happen:

2Cor.5:8

[8] We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord.

I worked for a very religious Mormon once and he was thrilled I was Jewish. I don't remember specifically, but he explained to me that the Mormon religion is tied to Judaism. Does anyone know about this?

All you Mormon Bashers can kiss my A&&! I am not one of those shrinking violet turn the other cheek Mormons and I'm going to tell you like it is.

You people who want to be left alone in your own religious beliefs gladly ridicule Mormons and call them names.

Mormons are probably one of the most misunderstood and maligned religions around. Why in the H-E double L do you think the early Mormons settled in a barren desert with a salt water lake. A place that absloutely now one in their right mind wanted. They settled there because they knew that after they had been chased across the country and murdered that no one would bother them in such a place. And through hard work and perserverance, not govt handouts, they prospered and continue today.

Mormons are some of the most upstanding, nice and CONSERVATIVE, VALUES BASED people that you'd ever want to meet. As a matter of fact the typical mormon could be the model freeper and yet you people still ridicule them because of religious beliefs that are protected by the first ammendment, something that is sacred to freepers. What a bunch of hippocrites!

What in the world did a Mormon ever do to you to deserve this treatmemt???? NOT A DAMN THING!!!

If you really want to know about this "Sect" feel free to email me or better yet, politely ask those two young men in for a 7UP next time they knock on your door. They will be happy to answer any all questions.

And by the way, my wife is Jewish. (go figure)

I feel better now. Thank you.

Under the practice, known by Mormons as vicarious baptism — a significant rite of the church — the dead are baptized by living church members who stand in as proxies.

This is digusting.
