My Father's Gone, Send A Prayer With Him (Vanity)
self | 10/8/03 | JohnRobertson

Posted on 10/08/2003 2:10:33 PM PDT by John Robertson

Born in 1918, he never knew his father, who died in the Great Flu Epidemic of that year. An Army vet of the Pacific theater, he was the sole survivor of a plane that went down in Borneo, and carried shrapnel his whole life. CCC camps in the 30s, outdoorsman, conservative, a hard-drinking man from the time when that description was uttered with some awe, not disparagement. But he quit one day, with his own one-step program: I'm through with that. Born and died in northwestern Pennsylvania, though he did some ranging in his time.

I was asked to deliver his eulogy. Here it is.

Good on you. I have not yet suffered that experience. It will happen, I know. With that awareness, I thus am enjoying my folks as much as possible, sharing the grandchildren and the like. Take care.....

My God have mercy on his soul, and may he help your family in this time of grief. In Jesus Christs name we pray Amen.

Man, I can relate to the "pit stops"....near the end, my dad never saw an Interstate rest stop he didn't like.....

And don't you feel a little small for every time you were impatient, even if it was inward? And don't you wish you could have one more pit stop with him? Thanks.

John, I can see that your Dad is now watching down on us!! Hopefully he can send a small blessing for my girls. I think God will pass him a few favors because he was a blessing to all those he touched.

REQUEST FOR YOUR GIRLS SENT...AND I'M SURE IT WAS RECEIVED.

P.S. Last year my Dad was gone 20 years. Although it was tough being 21 and losing my daddy, I know he watches over us now. I'm sending a prayer that my dad will show yours the best fishing spots (are they all good in heaven??)

IF YOUR DAD'S FISHING DAYS WERE ANYTHING LIKE MY FATHER'S, THEY PROBABLY ARE BOTH HOISTING BEERS AGAIN.

Thanks.

...place in your heart.

Beautiful phrase--thank you. And as for you "bawling" your eyes out...I know it was in a good way.

I just lost my dad two weeks ago. WWII Veteran. Born 1918 also. He served in Cairo during the war--airborne engineer. Had lots of stories to tell at the end, before that he didn't say much about the war.

My father never said much about the war either. It was his buddies who told us that he was wounded, the only survivor of a plane that went down. LOTS of those guys just never said a lot about it--I think they did that out of respect for the magnitude of the events, and also because they had a lot of class.

My mother, who died in 1995,loved coffee also. She judged all restaurants by the coffee, not the food.

Same! We'd point to a place, and say Great burgers, and he'd say, Bad coffee, and keep driving! Frustrating!

There were times when I did NOT know I was blessed to have had such a father...but they are far outnumbered by those times when I have realized--and continue to realize--that he is indeed a wonderful blessing. Thank you.

Real Men for saving the world who didn't know their greatness...

Great phrase...and it tells so much about that generation, doesn't it? Thanks.

Your eulogy made me (and apparently lots of other folks on this thread) make me wish I'd known your dad. That's all that's needed for a good eulogy. Your dad would be proud of the writing skill you showed.

And I am very moved by your assessment. Thank you.
