My Father's Gone, Send A Prayer With Him (Vanity)
self | 10/8/03 | JohnRobertson

Posted on 10/08/2003 2:10:33 PM PDT by John Robertson

Born in 1918, he never knew his father, who died in the Great Flu Epidemic of that year. An Army vet of the Pacific theater, he was the sole survivor of a plane that went down in Borneo, and carried shrapnel his whole life. CCC camps in the 30s, outdoorsman, conservative, a hard-drinking man from the time when that description was uttered with some awe, not disparagement. But he quit one day, with his own one-step program: I'm through with that. Born and died in northwestern Pennsylvania, though he did some ranging in his time.

I was asked to deliver his eulogy. Here it is.

Eternal rest grant onto him O, Lord
and may perpetual light shine upon him.
May his soul and the souls of all the faithful departed
by the mercy of God rest in peace

I pray O Lord, that this day may be his birthday in Heaven.

In Christ,
Trebics

Simply beautiful. You are so fortunate to have such wonderful memories and I'm sure you know you were blessed when God decided to give him to you for a father.

The Lord is to be praised for a life so fully lived ... for the gift of words that your Dad was given ... and for the wonderful words he has left behind in his own hand ~ all of this but only a part of a rich legacy he has given to his loved ones. May you and your family be comforted at this time, John ... your Dad will be speaking in his stories for many years to come ~ your family is blessed, indeed ...

Thank your God, JR, that your father was such a man that you will miss him now that he is gone. Believe me, this isn't always the case with a parents passing

May God have mercy upon his soul and give peace to those he leaves.

Your eulogy made me (and apparently lots of other folks on this thread) make me wish I'd known your dad. That's all that's needed for a good eulogy. Your dad would be proud of the writing skill you showed.

Thank you for letting us know your Dad in some small way through your eulogy. He will be with you and your family for the rest of your days, and he will be with us through the stories you shared. I know I'll never visit the Redwoods again without a smile and a mental picture of how you helped your Dad enjoy them. My Dad was born in 1919, Battle of the Bulge, engineer and writer. We're so grateful for his writing, and in eager anticipation of the stories he's promised to write down this fall. As I enjoy the father I still have, I'll pray for you and yours for your loss.

Beautifully told. Obviously the talent for writing a story didn't skip a generation in your family. My Dad will have been gone 39 years come January. I was eighteen, still miss him like the dickens. Treasure the memories and think how great that reunion day is going to be. God bless.

A wonderful tribute, and it is very appreciated that you chose to share it with us. He left the world a richer place, to be sure.

You are all in my thoughts.
