Before founding Islam, Muhammad was a pagan, like most members of his tribe, and the economy of Mecca was to some extent dependant on pilgrims who came to worship the hundreds of gods enshrined there. He claimed to have been visited (and commissioned as a prophet) by the angel Gabriel.

"He claimed to have been visited (and commissioned as a prophet) by the angel Gabriel."Yes, but the account is suspect. Usually when we see an angel from God in the Old and New Testament their first reponse to man is "fear not". God's angels seek to comfort and reassure man before delivering their message.
The spirit that seized Mohammed was anything but kind. Mohammed's wife thought he was possessed by an evil spirit. I think he should have listened to her.

The spirit that seized Mohammed was anything but kind. Mohammed thought he was possessed by an evil spirit. But it was his wife that convinced him that it was an angel. I think this is one time, he shouldn't have listened to her.
