Capture of the German U-Boat U-505

Polar Bear Attacks U.S. Submarine

Daily News story photo

A polar bear chewed on the rudder of a U.S. submarine and then attacked it after the sub surfaced in the ice pack during maneuvers between the North Pole and Alaska this spring, the U.S. Navy reported last week.

The submarine "Connecticut," a new Seawolf-class sub, had partly surfaced with its sail and rudder sticking through the ice on April 27. An officer then looked around outside with the sub's periscope and noticed it was being stalked by a polar bear.

In a series of pictures captured on the periscope's camera, the bear apparently chewed on the rudder, then batted it around. The Navy says the damage was minor.

I once expressed an interest in Submarine Service, but failed the first question:
"I like to sleep with the windows open     True___  False___
"

One of my "voices" is very fond of telling me that I'm about as useful as a screen on a submarine.....

This is the DFC, the Distinguished Flying Cross.

Not quite what you described, I'm still looking. This came from armyawards.com, where all military awards are listed.

You may be right about photographic license, but I'm not giving up...

Yeah, and the medal itself is what's throwing me. None of the high-order medals have the color scheme you describe, so I am really thinking here that the photo shows blue where it should show red for the DSC.

I actually sell a certain brand of scrapbooking stuff. I'm going to pull out the Nave, Marines and Air Force ones tomorrow and look to see what medals they show. I'm curious about it now. I went on the Grunt's site and found that the rank insignia that I have stickers for is Staff Sgt. I want the pages about KJ to be accurate. I will be making my own Capt. Bars. Do they have special arm insignias like SSgt, etc, or just the bars?

Army officers have special branch insignia...KJ is Transportation Corps, or Quartermaster, right? I'll look some more...

Here is the definitive link for all service ribbons:

http://www.defenselink.mil/specials/ribbons/Army1.html

Once there, you can go to all of the service sites.

TRansportation -- MCT if that helps. Although lately his addy includes HRT?? I'm telling you, if the military could come up with any more acronyms I don't know what I'd do! LOL! It took me this long to figure out that LSA stands for Life Support Area!

I think his units sig looks a lot like the Detroit Red Wings Hockey team logo -- at least that's what's on his unit pic in the lower corner.
