Davis Panicking, Demands Bustamante Withdraw

Fox News reports Tuesday evening that Democrats in California are “panicking” as the Governor’s recall race goes to down to the wire.

The cable network also reports that fierce infighting has developed between Gov. Gray Davis and recall candidate Lt. Governor Cruz Bustamante.

The Davis camp is encouraging Bustamante to withdraw from the race.

According to sources, Davis’ polls show that if Bustamante pulls out, support for the recall would drop ten points.

Bustamante, meanwhile, is frantically trying to raise $1 million before the last weekend TV blitz -- but is getting stiff resistance from wealthy Democrats.

Fox says the Davis camp has been urging Democratic donors not to give to the Bustamante campaign.

I've been to the Win-River Casino. It was eerie driving in there. You drive a mile or so through the reservation, past Indian homes. Talk about ghetto! Ramshackle shacks, broken windows, dead cars everywhere, and then all of a sudden you come to this big shiny casino.

You can't help but wonder where the money goes. It certainly isn't going to the reservation.

I'm not so sure this is something to be happy about... I smell the Clintons behind this.

If Cruz drops out, support for the recall drops 10 points, Davis could stay in office just as the Clintons have been pushing for. Per the article, Cruz is being shunned by the Dem high-rollers....per Fox News this afternoon, Cruz canceled all his public engagements today.

I see from the news this evening the Krintons have dispatched their butt-boy Terry McAwful to CA to try and help GD pull out a miracle. I suspect that before he took off for the left coast, Terry took quite a tongue lashing from her Royal Heinous who knows that if the Republicans take CA, her future is down the tubes. Old Terry looked like he had just come face-to-face with the Devil....then again, I suppose he did.

Each voter who shows up next week gets to make TWO votes: first on whether or not to recall Davis, and second on who should replace him. The two votes are made at the same time without anybody knowing whether or not the second vote will ever be counted. It won't if the recall fails.

That's why this story doesn't make sense if its point is that Bustamente being in increases the chances of a recall.

However, Davis might be afraid that a bunch of democrats want him out and that Bustamente quitting will keep them home. That's dumb too.

Besides how can a candidate withdraw at this late date? He's still going to be on the ballot, so all a withdrawal would amount to is him encouraging his supporters to vote for another candidate? Who? Camajo? Arianna?

Bottom line: this is just plain funny....

Cruz hasn't been seen on the campaign trail for 3 days and at a rally last night, Davis refused to endorse him.

Wouldn't it be hilarious if Bustamante withdrew under pressure, Davis is recalled anyway, and Bustamante loses by 1% of the vote... making it clear he would have won if he had stayed in?

Well, you never know... but it seems unlikely that he would withdraw. The Indians have invested heavily in his campaign while all other donors have shunned him. Why would he turn his back on the one interest group which has supported his pathetic campaign?
