Immigration Becoming an Issue in Campaigns
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | September 28, 2003 | Vicki Haddock

As an issue in California, immigration is rather like nitroglycerin -- it's powerful enough to reshape the electoral landscape, but if it isn't handled with great care, it can blow up in your face.
Case in point: two ads that Arnold Schwarzenegger's campaign has begun airing....

Arnie, you're no Ronnie: To earn trust, be principled

No less than Hollywood, politics loves a sequel. If customers were willing to lay out $38 million for "The Terminator," chances are good that you have a ready-made audience for "Terminator 2: Judgment Day." If Ronald Reagan, actor and conservative, was the most successful politician in a half century, why not take a chance on "Ronald Reagan 2: Running Man"?
You can't look at Arnold Schwarzenegger without ticking off the similarities to Reagan when he ran for governor in 1966: actor, novice candidate, Republican. And Schwarzenegger doesn't want anyone to miss them. In public appearances, he has frequently invoked Reagan's name, lest voters ignore the obvious.
Listen to the echoes:
"We have everything we need here in California -- except leadership....

No-Confidence Vote(CA Recall-1911 Hiram Johnson)

No-confidence vote (Back in 1911 Hiram Johnson spelled out value of California's recall option)
By Gary Galles
September 28, 2003 -
Ever since the proposed recall of Gov. Gray Davis first made the ballot, those displeased by the prospect have attacked recall as harmful to democracy and inconsistent with the spirit that led to its inclusion in California's Constitution.
Recall opponents even quote Hiram Johnson, California's 23rd governor, who ushered the recall into statewide existence. They cite Johnson's remark that "the electorate has rendered its decision, a decision conclusive upon all its representatives," which they say means the 2002 election results must remain inviolate for four years....

A Fresno State professor gave Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante credit for a speech class without the requirements students now face. By Doug Hoagland The Fresno Bee (Published Sunday, September 28, 2003, 5:43 AM)
Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante got credit but did not have to attend a basic speech class at Fresno State in the late 1990s because a professor decided in 15 minutes or less that the Fresno Democrat would have earned at least a C based on his public utterances....

Davis, Schwarzenegger Go Head-to-Head
FOX NEWS ^ | September 27, 2003 | AP
Posted on 09/28/2003 6:36 PM PDT by BulletBobCo
SOUTH GATE, Calif. Concerned about "spoiler" candidates on the left and right, Gov. Gray Davis and Arnold Schwarzenegger have moved quickly in the last few days to portray the race as a head-to-head contest a strategy some analysts say could backfire.
The governor and the actor got some help Saturday from Larry King, who invited them onto his show to debate one-on-one. But while Davis's campaign quickly accepted, the Republican front-runner's campaign insisted he has no intention of debating the Democrat....

IN THE GOP: MCCLINTOCK SIPHONS POTENTIAL VOTES FROM SCHWARZENEGGER
By Howard Mintz and Mike Zapler Mercury News
Democratic Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante and Republican state Sen. Tom McClintock are in different political worlds. They don't agree on much of anything, from taxes and abortion rights, to immigration and state spending.
But as Bustamante heads into the final days of the Oct. 7 recall campaign, McClintock -- an arch-conservative whose party has turned its back on him -- has become his most unlikely and critical political ally....

Arnold looks set to topple Davis
USA Today ^ | Sept. 28, 2003 | John Ritter,
Posted on 09/28/2003 11:12 PM PDT by FairOpinion
SAN FRANCISCO Arnold Schwarzenegger appears poised to terminate Gray Davis, and the Democratic governor is reacting like an underdog by airing attack ads and trying to goad the Hollywood action hero into a head-to-head debate. A week before California's recall election, a decisive majority favors tossing Davis, and the only Democrat running to replace him, Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante, trails Schwarzenegger, a USA TODAY/CNN/Gallup Poll says. The poll finds that Davis and Bustamante have failed to excite much of their Democratic base and that more than two-thirds of independents crucial swing voters say Davis should go....
