Just because everyone, most, think it's a good idea, doesn't make it LEGAL. If they had a do not put a commercial on TV list, I guarantee you, you'd have at least 50 million folks on that thing too.
Lots of otherwise smart people at FR haven't bothered looking a bit further as to WHY this is illegal and why it would have serious ramifications on our economy.
As a Financial Advisor in a solid position, my competition would be wiped out by this legislation. I personally benefit from this law.... BUT it is BAD law, and a BAD idea.
Sorry to be the one person saying the Emperor has no clothes.

A company, without this law, has to comply with a slew of many existing laws. Chances are, the companies that are really bugging you, are already in violation of Federal and State laws. This was just another law, on top of the last law. Something our govt is very good at.

Bad for you, Good for the rest of us. No, Commercials wouldn't be left out because we would all have to pay more to watch TV.

Previously, companies had to have their own "do not call list" but it was hard to regulate when the company says "you never told us to put you on that list". A do not call registry clears that one up.

"Total bullcrap. I own the phone, I pay for it, all the DNCall list does it give me a CHOICE to limit the type of calls allowed to come into MY PHONE. " Just off the top of my head, what if you dont want blacks to come into MY PHONE or into my business? After all, you own your business too. What if congress votes to support that? Is it constitutional?
More realistically, what if some day, congress votes to limit what some PC committee calls hate speech (i.e. conservatism) from playing on the TV that you also paid for?
I havent thought this through, but on its face, this law was just too easy. I suspect that a constitutional amendment would be required to bypass first amendment protections for cold callers.

Terrible logic! It's two different things. I can't "turn off" my phone for fear some of my family may need my help!
If I choose to turn on the TV, I agree to be bombarded by advertising. If I DON'T answer my phone, someone who really needs to talk to me, may pay a dear price. It's obvious who you favor on this issue! Let Congress MAKE it legal and while they're at it, they can tell the Judicial Branch to stay out of the Legislative Branch's beeswax!

And you don't think your phone bill would absolutely skyrocket without businesses using them for soliciting business? C'mon? The phone company probably gets 20-30% of it's revs from them. That's the part that ALMOST makes them profitable!

Maybe Congress should retaliate by threatening to strip Federal judges to find someone in contempt of court for interrupting during courtroom proceedings. Would be a bad law, but maybe get their attention with the clear parallel of denying someone control over their domain. No, the only correct solution is impeachment. They should start with the Supreme Court justices who reread the Constitution until they could find pornography and sodomy in its pages.

Certified letter to a company is all it takes. Can do that with unwanted junk mail too. Get another call, or letter, and BLAMMO!

Your imagination is taking you to the reality of why this thing is a bad idea, and why our court system is protecting us, from .... us.

What if CNN turned your TV on and forced your TV to turn to their Channel? There is a difference in speech here.

This is no different than putting a 'No Solicitors' sign on your front door.

Yeah, the phone companies don't make any meaningful money of the telemarketing industry. Yeah, that's the ticket. Losing that business would have little or no effect on them, and your bill...
