I just got an EDIS alert that there was an 8.0 quake near Hokkaido, Japan. Tsunami warnings for AK. No news sources yet that I can find...

Interesting to see all the deleted footage, although the "end of the world, you must all love each other (or we'll drown your sorry a$$es)" mush was a tad much...

It's been a few years since I've seen the director's cut, but that's not how I remember interpreting it at the time. My take was that they *were* in the process of drowning us all because they saw us as a dangerous, warmongering species, but then called it off after seeing the lengths to which Bud had gone to save them from the bomb, and the love between him and his wife, and the self-sacrifice he had made for the "aliens" or whatever they were. It made them realize that for all of mankind's dangerous flaws, there's a lot of greatness in us too, and we were worth saving.

I was defending his post which occurred before any of us knew if this was real. The use of HUGH and SERIES is well known on FR, especially when something seems like a hoax. Two posters jumped him for being insensitive about the deaths of people, and we have no confirmation of deaths still. Did I miss something? Did I misinterpret your REPLY to him?

OK, now imagine running into a superwave in the open sea. I don't know if it really happens, but I've read speculation in good sources that it does.

IIRC, they began the big waves AFTER the ROV took the MRV down to say hi, not before.

I agree with the, IF Yellowstone Caldera blew, The US would never be the same. World Politics would change in an instant. I wouldn't even try to predict what would happen, as far as other countries. I think most of the US would probably go into instant shutdown.

I saw reference to a 6.0 aftershock. One problem here is that there are two scales. The one we use in the US (Richter) and the Japanese one.

Short of undersea landslides or waves getting into a kind of multiplying-effect-sync [for lack of a better layman's way of putting it] WHAT OTHER causes are there?

Huge sustained winds. Wind over the water is what generates "ordinary" waves, and the longer and harder they blow, the stronger the wave activity builds. Theoretical max for wind-driven waves in deep ocean is about 100 feet from crest to trough -- beyond that the tendency of even stronger winds to build the waves higher is counterbalanced by the wind basically "blowing the tops off" the waves and preventing them from growing any larger. Waves around 100 feet tall were observed in the massive Atlantic storm which was the basis of the book/movie "The Perfect Storm", in which a hurricane and two major storms all collided at the same place at the same time.
