Dear FReeper friends,

I'm writing to let you know that I just found out that I (retroactively) made Law Review at my school (#10 of 308 in my class).

I want to thank all the FReeper law experts who gave me advice and help last year when I was a 1L. I plan to pay you all back by taking our fight to Law Review.

Anyway, I am looking for a topic for my "note", and I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions. I was thinking about writing something about election law (Bush v. Gore, Lautenberg, 9th Circuit recall decision, etc.) and the recent intrusion of the judiciary into the political branches of government.

Any help/hints/advice?

Write something about...Truth. Write about how it's not a lawyer's job to bring his politics into the law. The Law is dynamic in and of itself. It doesn't need ideology injected into it. Indeed, one could say that, once ideology is shoe-horned into the law...it's no longer The Law.

How about an note explaining how no one reads law review notes and articles except the people who write them and that they have absolutely no relevance or value whatsoever to the practice of law. (OK, OK, I admit that I didn't make law review and was no where near the top of my class and I'm a bit jealous of your success :-)

I was on law review. Very soon you will discover that it is the ultimate Huck Finn (or was it Tom Sawyer?) manipulation. You see, the school needs a law review to remain accredited. Some brilliant administrator decides, "Hey, let's capitalize on the super-competitive nature of law students and tell them it is some great honor to cite-check articles!"

For all the work, it was a great time and some of my best friends to this day are my old law review buddies.

Congratulations. I have no advice on your note or comment topics. Mine was published and I doubt it ever has been read, let alone cited.

You know, there's gonna be a ton of notes written on these cases involving the Constitution and state election laws and most will never be read. I'd recommend you consider some paths that will be less traveled. For example, just about anything involving the laws regulating our health care system may seem mundane now, but will be very hot shortly. People will then be doing research and actually finding your contribution. ;-)

Pick a non toxic subject such as amicus curiae briefs.
Plenty of material,what are they, who can file, weight of each brief,what can be filed,etc. etc. quote some outrageous ones and some excellent ones. I wish you lots of luck.

You had better as hell not write it on the Political Question doctrine, particularly in reference to what's going on with the California Recall and the 9th Circuit right now.
