FReeper Storm Check-in (vanity)
9-19-03 | me

Posted on 09/19/2003 5:33:24 AM PDT by netmilsmom

Through the week, many of us heard of FReepers who were in the path of Isabel. I personally know Gabz, Corin Stormhands and Consitution Day were in the area. I thought it would be a good idea if we had a thread to ask if someone is ok and let them check in. Prayers to our FRiends in harms way. Thanks!

PECO said late Friday afternoon that 305,000 customers are still without power. Most of them are in Chester and Delaware counties. More than 140,000 people were out of power in Chester County alone. Repair crews will be working through the weekend.

Remember those repair crews in your prayers. They are leaving their families at home, not knowing when they will return. They work hard in dangerous conditions.

Yes, I will. I thought about them a lot today as I was sitting outside not getting anything done. I was thinking that I am glad I don't have their job. I can't imagine hanging out working on high voltage with wind, rain and trees falling everywhere. I love those people!!!

Glad you've got power at home now ..... :-)

We have a nephew who works for a power company in NC. He's in a desk job now but would rather be out climbing poles and stringing lines. He thrives on that sort of thing. Between the hurricanes, ice storms, and severe weather in NC and VA in the last few years, he's gotten in a LOT of overtime. The only downside for him is that he has to be away from his family at times of crisis.

I don't envy the customers of Dominion power. nor their line crews.

But in order to inteject a bit of levity - I did lose my power this evening after the flickering!!!

but as I have said about the entire situation - I am very fortunate compared to many. I was inconvenienced for a bit of time - so what.

This storm made history for the bay.

Not the kind of history anyone wants to see made about anywhere.

Glad to hear you're safe and sound.

I am SO relieved to hear that your son-in-law can be evaluated and treated as an outpatient, rather than the feared heart attack. Great to see you back!

abner shopping list.

1. new coffee pot!!!!!!!!!

But at least the power is back on!!!

For an hour tonight I had phone - but no laptop - hubby's working tonight and took it with him!!! Who whudda thunk I'd have to worry about power tonight?????

My heart goes out to all those still without.

One of the local power companies handed out 32,000 tons of dry ice today, on the DelMarVA peninsula alone. By the 6pm news had restored power to 70,000 of the 110,000 customers who had lost power in lower Delaware and the Eastern Shore. I think I'll stop bashing them as I have been for 15 years. They are the power company that I use now (for the first time in 15 years)

Glad to hear VOC was spared the generator drudgery--and that you can savor your coffee warmer than room temperature.

Looking back, will prolly laugh most about last night and...

Yes, that was one of the sadder parts of the storm. A Carteret-Craven Electric guy of 29 years was electrocuted in Newport while making repairs during the storm. These guys and their families give a lot that many take for granted when they turn on the switch.

You are absolutely right. We are lucky that we only lost power for a few hours. I know that other people were affected far worse than I and I hope the damage and inconvenience for them is short and easy to fix.

I'm glad that all the FReepers are ok too.

It is amazing how down right crabby I get without the power on. Horrible.

I know that as soon as the power goes back on at work, that is where I will be. I have about a week to get the new trailer lettered and starred up for Albuquerque. The trailer leaves next week.

The first thing I did after the power came on here is grab that photo and put it on my hard drive and show it to VOC. Definitely a classic.

I went to make my first cup of coffee for the day, and the coffee maker did something wierd and exploded coffee grounds and water all over the place.

I don't mean to laugh ... but that must have been a site

Good news about the power being back

Status in Richmond, Virginia:

The power is off area-wide in all Central Virginia.
Water is mostly on, but must be boiled.

Some land line phones are mostly on.

We are cooking on a propane grille.
Some stores are open for canned goods.
No ice or water to be bought within 100 miles.

Working from a laptop with battery - charged in the car.

A good friend and his wife are now in Medical College of Virginia hospital. Punctured lung, broken legs, head injury, from a tree crashing into their house. But alive, thank god.

You would think it even funnier if you knew the story of how many times I have managed to get coffee all over the counter top because I forgot to put the pot underneath, or forgot to put coffee in the little hopper, and other funny coffee stories. All of them bad.

Before it exploded this evening, I made sure everything was set just right: The coffee in the hopper, water in the top, and pot set on the bottom. It is one of those 2 minutes and the coffee is done makers.

Anyway, the 2nd pot exploded on me too. VOC then took a look at it and found that one of the little holes was clogged.
