I'm shocked... But, in my shock, I've come up with a nifty idea. You see, I was planning on going to California on vacation next month, and spending a day or two in Fresno! 2 reasons, really: To meet JimRob, and to see Harvey Korman and Tim Conway do a show!
Well, I emailed the following to Mayor Autry of Fresno...
Dear Mayor Autry,
My name is MarkL, and I was planning to be vacationing in California this October. As a long time fan of the Carol Burnett Show, I was looking forward to seeing Tim Conway and Harvey Korman while I was in Fresno for a few days.
Imagine my suprise when I found out according to your "Human Relations Commission," I'm a member of a "hate group." Obviously, you wouldn't want someone like me in your town. I wasn't going to spend my entire vacation in Fresno, just two days, but I've decided that I will use that time elsewhere. It's a shame, really: Tim and Harvey are terrific alone, but together they are far greater comic actors. It's a shame I'm going to miss it.
I don't know if I want to wait until May of 2004 to see them in Branson, MO, so I may just delay my vacation altogether until this January, and see them in Las Vegas.
On the other hand, the money I'll be saving can be used for something else. If Jim Robinson decided to sue the city for defamation, I'll be sure to use the money I saved as a donation to the legal fees.
Sincerely,
MarkL
Who knows... Maybe this sort of publicity will get a public apology out of the city....
NAHHH... Being a DEMONrat means never having to say you're sorry!

I gotta tell you...you have a great case here. I would sue them. I was glad to see the media gave you a fair shake. You know, I think you're right...
First off, the term "hate group" has specific legal connotations, and if a government entity makes an accusation that FreeRepublic is a hate group, then without specific proof, it should be actionable.

I have never been to DU before and don't plan on going.
This story will probably get national press. I wonder how many "converts" to their "cause" the left will get when the country learns that the left (using the front of a city government) considers supporting the military a hate crime. I wonder how the American people, who have husbands, wives, children and grandchildren in harm's way, will feel about the left?
How short-sighted of the liberals.

Just sent the following to all members of the Fresno City Council (with my Washington Address, since showing that this has national implications may do more to cause a sense of embarrassment than if it were just a local issue):
I am an American Indian, who is a member of an activist group/online forum known as Free Republic.
I wanted to register my disapproval with the recent press release from the Fresno HRC. Calling Free Republic a 'Hate Group' is divisive, intolerant, and dishonest.
Although I am not a resident of Fresno, I am being targeted by the HRC through its press release in what has become an issue of national implications, with Free Republic being an 'organization' not restricted to Fresno alone.
I would like to ask that you look into this improper, and possibly illegal, use of city resources for the sake of a biased political agenda, and to take appropriate action to ensure it never happens again.
Thank you for your time.
Respectfully yours,
Chad Fairbanks

"I couldn't see yout T-shirt clearly, but was it the one the troops autographed and sent you?"
No, I was not wearing my autographed T-shirt. If I'd known we were going to get some media attention, I would have worn it again. I hate to wear it; I'm afraid that too much washing will make the signatures fade. LOL
Maybe I'll wear it next time, just in case the media shows up or maybe I should wear it to the next City Council meeting.

Well, maybe the patriotic people in Fresno who are not currently FReepers will take the time to check out this site. They may decide to join us.
Many who don't really know what's happening in this country (far left socialism) may become politically educated for the first time in their lives.
The Lord works in strange ways, I guess.

Well, it's up to us, in many instances, to educate those in our community - also, by showing those around us the idiocy of the Fresno Human Relations Commission, it may cause them to take notice of similar non-elected bodies in their own community...

This is what I sent.
I grew up in Tulare County and lived in California most of my life. I am first generation Hispanic, served in the Peace Corps, taught in California Junior Colleges and doing my part to live a life towards public service. For the Human Rights Commission to call the Free Republic a hate group is to call everything I represent, wicked. My father is a doctor; my brother a police officer, my mother and grandmother were nurses. So is our public service and minority status considered hateful since we do not share the same political ideology as the HRC???
The HRC is also stating the FR hates minority groups, yet I am a minority as are many who use the Free Republic message board. It is fallacious for the HRC to state that a conservative message board is a community of the violent and the cruel. I am proud of the grass root efforts of the FreeRepublic and hope that the HRC will publicly apologize for its misplaced political jockeying. This is persecution, plain and simple.
Thank you,

Wearing your T-shirt to the next city council meeting sounds like a good idea, especially if the subject of "hete groups" is on the agenda, HEHEHEHEHEHEH

Before you leap please know that according to the this morning's Fresno Bee web site, Autry has already taken a public postion.
Autry is asking the city manager to suspend the HRC until the matter is clarified and Autry is demanding that the HRC chairman resign since she has admitted to sending the fax to the media without the knowledge of the rest of the commission after the commision voted to alert the city to the potential danger to public health the rally and picnic might pose.
In short the HRC is in the soup with Autry and he is responding agressively.
To: Bob J
I sent Mayor Autry a nice 'Thank You' note, thanking him for his fair-minded stance on this issue. He seems like a good guy, but then I'm only basing that judgement on this incident... :0)

It was pure luck that I had brought that card to give to Jim and to show other Freepers.
If you missed it, Jim scanned it .....
Sometimes it pays to be lucky!!
