With all due respect, Bruce Springsteen has been a worldwide star for 30 years, so I don't think "flash in the pan" is quite accurate.

Although Al Franken was, at the time, a fellow at the Shorenstein Center on the Press, Politics, and Public Policy at Harvard, his unauthorized use of the Harvard letterhead for that purpose did, regretably, embarass Harvard. As in most satire, the purpose is to reveal something absurd about the subject through wit. Considering that Franken was asking Mr. Ashcroft to share his own abstinence story, you would expect a quickly forthcoming response. Which never came. Sometimes I think the conservative world would be enriched if you ever appreciated irony.

My much younger sister recently went to see Willy Nelson in Mitchell, SD. She was in stitches describing to me how half way through the show, Willy and the band got tired and had to sit down and the mosh pit was full of grey-haired women trying to rush the stage.

I heard poor Willy has endorsed Dennis Kucinich.. Kuspinach.. well you know who I mean, for prez.

Why should I expect Ashcroft to reply to personal questions about his sexual life, especially when the questions are posed by an aggressively nasty "humorist" who has bad taste?

As Attorney General of the US, Ashcroft must be well aware that one's sex life is a private matter, as long as one does not break any laws.

I've noticed a lot of new posters on these threads. I think it's safe to assume that they didn't register here because they are Liberals etc; they registered here because someone posted a link on a Brucie message board which caused them to sign up to defend one of America's greatest singers.

I hope some of them continue to post here.

If 40,000 fans are at a concert in which Brucie says something that offends maybe about a dozen humourless people, it is fair that some of the majority (who enjoyed the event and were not offended) should be given a right to reply.

If the same complainants go to Brucie's next concert in the hope of hearing - and deliberately misinterpreting - a similar quip, it is clear they are trolling. Brucie won't ban them. He will just happily take their money and laugh all the way to the bank.

I don't mean to be a downer but I don't think there is alot of hope. As kids in public schools are being conditioned to despsise guns and boys feminized and in general dumbed down except to be EXTREMELY emotional ... WHO will join the military? WHO will stand up for is RIGHT? WHO will THINK? WHAT will they think - passific (sp) socialism is what I see in the future along with NO moral compass or rather anything is permissible but what is right. Convince me I'm wrong. It's especially scary when ALOT of parents buy into to this and reinforce this crap at home - all believing that they are righteous citizens for John Lennon's world - imagine ... .

Of course, The Great Singer is entitled to his political opinions, and we are permitted to analyze those publicly-stated opinions..

Springsteen suggested buying Prankin' Al Franken's book and (in my original post on this thread) I mentioned one of the reasons why I wouldn't buy it. For purposes of brevity, I did not mention all the reasons I wouldn't buy the book.

It did not occur to me that a poster who chose the name "AdlaiStevenson" had a music-fan's motivation rather some a politics-fan's motivation. Maybe that is because Adlai E. Stevenson was somewhat of a political hero to me, while I was growing up.

Well.....now that I've finished giving my feeble excuses for my bad behavior--

• I ask forgiveness for all my conscious and subconscious wrongdoings in this thread, whether they are committed in the past or in the future
• Next time, I will try to be more open-minded to the musical motivations of someone who accuses me of lacking a sense of irony.

Seriously, I don't think that this latest storm in a teacup has hurt Brucie in the slightest. He has a fanatical following and most of the people trashing him probably wouldn't go to his sellout concerts anyway.

I'm reminded of a joke that Billy Connolly tells about a live show he gave in Australia. He was telling some pretty offensive jokes and an irrate member of the audience jumped up on stage and shouted: "I didn't come here to be insulted!"

Billy replied: "Oh, where do you usually go then?"

The guy then tried to thump him but didn't realise that the bottom of Billy's beard isn't attached to his chin so he went flying.

The other audience members probably thought it was all part of the act.
